The supposed landing spot of Sir Francis Drake in 1591, when he came ashore for repairs, food and water. He did write of the cliffs reminding of those of Dover.

This morning a herd of female Thule elk graze above the bay. I wonder did the crew include ancestors of these in their provisions as they set sail again.

I visited with my college choir (men and women) to entertain the troops at Christmas. We sang sacred Christmas classics and carols at the midnight service in the chapel. We stayed 3 days, helping to serve Christmas Dinner to the boys, among other activities. It was pitch black (mid-winter), and everyone was so nice to us! They presented each of us with a souvenir charm (low-grade silver, the size of a half dollar)--seen here. We flew up and back on a C-54 troop transport, making stops and singing at bases in Goose Bay, Gander, and Prince Edward Island. We were each issued a duffel bag of "Arctic gear"--a huge parka, mukluks, etc. Such a FOND MEMORY of a wonderful trip!

I know I had a much more joyful time than did the Vances--and I looked better, too!!

Canadian Eskimo Dog, Iqaluit, Nunavut -- This Canadian Kennel Club recognized breed has survived as one of Canada's only indigenous dog breeds for over 2000 years. Closely related to the Greenland dog, and deriving from the Thule Inuit Culture of the Canadian North and Greenland--the Canadian Eskimo Dog has been called by many names throughout history--Gronlandshund, Inuit Husky, and by the Inuit--Qimmiq...

It was the wildest, strangest music you ever heard, full of the sound of birds and the cries of animals and the wind and the rain, and the thunder and the lightning, and the dashing of huge waves against the shores of a great cold ocean that was formed from ice that had made its way slowly down from Ultima Thule. Beginning over 3,000 years ago several cultures have occupied Mallikjuaq Territorial Park on Mallik Island near Kinngait, Nunavut, Canada. The early Dorset and Tunnet peoples were replaced by the Thule (ancestors of the present Inuit) 1,000 years ago.

Thule village structure made from whale bones. In the arctic there is no wood, so the natives had to adapt!

A herd of Thule Elk grazing along the Pacific on Point Reyes. A very misty morning, so cool to see them take shape out of the mist as I approached.

Location on Flickr map is rough guess - direction of photo puts University Pk between Twaharpies and Ultima Thule. Location on map appears to have the distinctive geology of the photo as well, but I can't identify the spot exactly. Could also be about 7 miles slightly south of east from there.

An Amalgam of time and place, personal

E vedo in aria un’insensata danza

di strani uccelli contro il cielo bigio

cantare un canto in questo mondo grigio,

un canto sordo ormai, senza speranza......

Francesco Guccini

Der König in Thule

Es war ein König in Thule,

Gar treu bis an das Grab,

Dem sterbend seine Buhle

Einen goldnen Becher gab.

Es ging ihm nichts darüber,

Er leert’ ihn jeden Schmaus;

Die Augen gingen ihm über,

So oft er trank daraus.

Und als er kam zu sterben,

Zählt’ er seine Städt’ im Reich,

Gönnt’ alles seinen Erben,

Den Becher nicht zugleich.

Er saß bei’m Königsmahle,

Die Ritter um ihn her,

Auf hohem Vätersaale,

Dort auf dem Schloß am Meer.

Dort stand der alte Zecher,

Trank letzte Lebensgluth,

Und warf den heiligen Becher

Hinunter in die Fluth.

Er sah ihn stürzen, trinken

Und sinken tief ins Meer,

Die Augen thäten ihm sinken,

Trank nie einen Tropfen mehr.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, in Faust

[ The King in Thule

There was a king in Thule,

faithful till the grave,

To whom his lover, dying,

A golden goblet gave.

Nought was to him more precious;

He drained it at every bout;

His eyes with tears ran over,

Every time he drank from it.

When came his time of dying,

He counted his kingdom's towns,

Granted his heirs everything

Except the golden goblet.

He sat at the royal banquet

His knights around him,

In the lofty hall of his fathers

There in the castle by the sea.

There stood the old carouser,

And drank the last life-glow;

And hurled the hallowed goblet

Into the tide below.

He saw it plunging and filling,

And sinking deep in the sea:

His eyes made him sink,

And never more drank he!

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, in Faust, in the translation edited by Nathan Haskell Dole - via Wikipedia - with a couple of modifications ("mistress" is definitely not the right word I think...) ]

Someone gave me that goblet when I was very small, and I loved drinking from it, despite the very strong metallic taste it gives to virtually anything.
