The Monuments Men
While exploring in Eastern Germany earlier this year, we came across something very interesting. At an abandoned industrial area, we walked straight out onto the film set for the new George Clooney film 'The Monuments Men'
We spent a good hour photographing the war torn scene (made mostly from polystyrene and a large sprinkling of rubble and a very cool vintage beaten up car) it was pretty amazing, like stepping back in time. I've never seen a film set, so it was quite inspiring for me.

During work at this location I got the time to take this shot. This subject is quite popular but anyway it is a good one. Fascinating location outside of Berlin.

Last night my wife and I watched the relatively new movie, The Monuments Men, directed by George Clooney. During our recent visit last month to the Strasbourg Cathedral we learned that during WW2 the Germans had stolen the stained glass windows from the cathedral and hidden them in a salt mine. They were recovered by the Americans and returned to the cathedral were they can be viewed and enjoyed today. These treasures were just a fraction of the art treasures stolen by the Germans during the War. The movie we found most enjoyable, depicting the story of The Monuments Men, who helped recover these historical treasures.
The stained glass windows in this image depict bible stories in an era when many could not read the Bible. They date from the middle ages. If you click on the ... icon to the far right and just below the image and then click on view all sizes and then on original you can see each panel in large and perhaps have some fun determining which Bible story is depicted. The windows in this image depict scenes from Jesus's life during the days leading up to His crucifixion.

Here's an eight minute video produced by Roberta Newman for the American Jewish Historical Society on activities of The Monuments Men who risked their lives to save art during World War II, including finding art masterpieces in two underground salt mines outside of Heilborn, Germany. This video includes narration by Monuments Man Harry Ettlinger who describes how nitro glycerin came 'within two months' of blowing up Europe's greatest art. "The first job I had was to get all 73 cases of stained glass windows that were taken out of the cathedral of Strasbourg," Mr. Ettlinger recalls. "I was the one who saw to it that all the boxes came to the top and got loaded onto trucks to be shipped to Strasbourg about an hour and a half away."

Of the maybe 300+ films I saw this year, these are the best ones. Some of them were released last year and I’ve been a bit slow getting round to them. Some of them were released even longer ago. The criteria are – I watched them in 2014 and I liked them. That’s it.
The Best...
This is another Automated External Defibrillator attached to the wall of The George in Rye Hotel in Lion Street. The coat of arms on the electrical junction box is that of the Cinque Ports, the Arms date from 1305 and shows three LIons passant guardant and the hulls of three ships all in gold. The George is an old coaching Inn and has recently undergone a sympathetic restoration and is very popular as a wedding venue and boutique hotel. In 2013 George Clooney and Brad Pitt stayed there whilst filming scenes for the film "The Monuments Men" on Camber beach.

I recently took a community ed photography course to brush up on my skills and am now attempting to shoot in manual mode most of the time. The group put out a challenge to photograph something you are reading. When I take a look, I feel like a better question might be "What aren't you reading?!"
