This is a random press of the shutter from the depths of The Fall moshpit, last Saturday night, Manchester. Yet another beer glass had just landed on my head (plastic of course in this age of H+S). My left foot was glued to the floor by some glutinous unknown substance. My right leg was flailing wildly without any semblance to 'Strictly Come Dancing'. Arms went up. Beer came down. Oh what a night..............
So, Mark E + The Fall third entry onto the jukebox are also the first outfit to make it two-in-a-row. Drop a coin in the slot :

only for 5 minutes did the sun shine today... taken from the front door of my apartment - you can see half of Mt Fuji in the distance... only half :(
There aren't too many of these classic narrow cabbed T45 tractor units left on the road in the UK, and this South Western Electricity Board Leyland Cruiser 16.23 E937MEU is another top-notch & faithful restoration from East Devon's no.1 AEC & Leyland restorer!
The first killing frost of the season. The temperature fell to minus six Celsius overnight and even the hardiest of the late sunflowers fell too. Time to find the heavier jacket I guess.
Ya ya ya....I'll be album working to day so I may not get to answer all of of you individually.....xx and enjoy the filler....
Thanking this lady for the textures...I meant to thank her earlier but I had to locate her again....x

experiencing beautiful autumn colours
Stourhead National Trust property is ranked one of the top places in the UK to see the autumn colours. I should have been there a week or so earlier but it was still amazing.
Having snapped "Pexford Pic" at Gauxholme, it seemed rude not to wait the extra half-hour and snap the freight behind it, the 8.59am Redcar Bulk Terminal - Fiddlers Ferry PS (6M17), especially seeing as it was a relatively rare coal movement. In this instance GBRf Shed 66701 is doing the honours.
Given the lack of time, I simply opted to drop down Pexford Road (which can be seen on the left of the image) and head up the footpath on the other side to the more traditional overlook.
In the foreground is the Rochdale Canal, which has the dubious honour of being the second highest canal in England at exactly 600' (183m) elevation on the stretch between West Summit and Longlees. That section lies a couple of miles behind me where the canal passes over the shoulder of the hill through which the railway burrows via the more well-known (to railfans at least) Summit Tunnel. With around 19 locks between the summit and Todmorden, visible in the distance, anyone navigating this stretch can be sure of a decent workout.

Ég var að mála þessa mynd í morgun um leið og ég hlustaði á fréttirnar um efnahagsástandið hér og um allan heim. Ekki veit ég hversvegna gömul þjóðsaga um Paradís var mér svona hugleikin. / I was painting this picture this morning while I were listening to the news about the financial crisis here in Iceland and all over the world. I don´t know why the old legend about Paradise and all that came into my mind.
After reccying this spot a week or so ago I was determined to return within a few days to optimise on the progressing autumn colours. Last night's forecast of a frost, together with a train schedule that indicated a mid-morning STP working, perfect for the light direction, were all good signs so today was to be the day.
After driving over and pulling into the A6 lay-by (the hike-in start point) I checked the phone again and couldn't believe what I saw - the STP working had been cancelled, and the next train likely to work over the line was the Ashburys, admittedly a fairly reliable runner, but not due for another 4.5 hours!
Not really wanting to leave the warmth of the car so soon I decided to head over to the Dowlow Quarry complex - the start point of the train. I knew that a light engine had headed out there early in the morning and I was keen to see what it was and where it was positioned, the latter an indicator of its readiness for departure.
Much to my surprise, and delight, it turned out to be a DB Tug, the perfect loco to brighten up the dark depths of Wye Dale, and also a nice compliment to the red wagon stock it would be hauling. More to the point it was positioned as if ready to depart, despite the schedule suggesting it had another 3 hours to wait.
A decision was made - rather than head into the fleshpots of Buxton for a prolonged coffee break, I headed back to the A6 lay-by to get booted-up and sit it out. Having got back there the first thing I did was re-check the phone - yikes, it had already left and would now be approaching Buxton!
Happy to report I scored a PB getting down into the valley and yomping the circa 250' up to the overlook on the other side - it came at a cost however with a severe sweat and a level of breathlessness that has probably cost me a few weeks of life-expectancy. At least the comp was already sussed out from last week's visit, and the positioning molehill was found easily enough!
So, to the bones, DB Tug no. 60017 crawls around the curve in Wye Dale on the approach to Peak Forest Junction Tunnel with the 13.08 Dowlow Briggs - Ashburys loaded limestone (6H52).
The viaduct just visible on the left carried the old line from Buxton to Bakewell (closed in June 1968, and now a cycle track in part) and, just below me but out of shot, is the third leg of what used to be a triangle which carried the Midland Mainline from London St Pancras to Manchester Central.

# aka WTF?
# Another Mr. TRONA in the remix this week with a Halloween theme, and I can't exactly say why...... no, not the Ministry song or even pining for free candy, or an excuse to Watch Arsenic & Old Lace. Tis warming up for summer, the uni-season essentially of Texas, and I miss living in an area of this pale blue dot where there still are distinct seasons, particularly the fall! I still hold on to the notion of moving to Chile when my region for now heats up in order to experience two autumns each year, the opposite of course of the famous endless summer zealously pursued by so many surfers, et al. Don't mind my mild seasonal depression, though. I'll make it to the Arctic or Antarctic some season soon to conduct my Atmospheric/Auroral sciences research in person and not via laptop from south central Texas! The Aurora will no doubt be visible this far south agIn, as it was, for instance, on October 29, 2003. But those are anomalies. and I need a spot like Syowa, or anywhere in Iceland, Northern Finland, Norway. Sweden, or even Poker Flat, Alaska, where direct access to geomagnetic storms and their impact is more the rule, and where Christmas doesn't feel like the fourth of [censored by Flickr/Yahoo!] July! ;-}
# Thank you for taking a look at this and other recent posts created rapidamente, an outlet for anxiety, et al., and I met some smart, cool people who helped me to better cope/manage/et al. Such symptoms that can at times be debilitating, really [psst... thanks, incidentally! =]. Oh, and of course I appreciate the visit. Skäl! 8^)!
# Psst. You'll be exhausted after all your planning for a Southern Hemisphere excursion! Not to worry! Stop by Abby and Martha's for some homemade Elderberry wine. Permanent cure for stress! Hahahahahahahahaha! Oops. Apologies. Giddy with all the mayhem I have to look forward to! Give my best to the girls! Hahahaha. Right. Sorry. Um, bottoms up!

How did it go? Yesterday was not that chaotic, surprisingly, so on the brighter note I will go back to the last weeks supermoon rise. I strongly feel that events like this one should actually draw our full attention. Not that often, if ever, some of us get to see sun rushing down on one side of the river and supermoon soaring up on the other, while both equally cast their light on the city! So for those of you who might never experience something like this, take a moment and enjoy. What do you think?

The Vyne is a 16th-century country house outside Sherborne St John, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. It was built for Lord Sandys, King Henry VIII's Lord Chamberlain. The house retains its Tudor chapel, with stained glass. The classical portico on the north front was added in 1654 by Inigo Jones's pupil John Webb. In the mid-eighteenth century The Vyne belonged to Horace Walpole's close friend John Chaloner Chute, who designed the Palladian staircase, whose magnificent apparent scale belies its actual small size. The Vyne was bequeathed by its final Chute owner, Sir Charles Chute, to the National Trust in 1958. Each year a number of concerts, plays and family events are run. The grounds contain large woodland and a wetlands nesting site which is populated by swans and Common Redshanks. There are a number of woodland, wetland and parkland walking trails. Dogs are welcome into the grounds (on leads), in Morgaston Woods and the Organic Parklands (under direct control). The Vyne holds an inscribed Roman ring as well as a lead tablet that speaks of a curse on the one who stole it. J.R.R. Tolkien was asked to comment on it as an expert on Anglo-Saxon history, including its connection to a mine fabled to have been dug by dwarves, and a few days after began writing Lord of the Rings.

the laurie bridge, named after prominent townsman walter laurie, who left a bequest for this bridge to be built, linking the spetchmans haugh-to wilton lodge park. also known as the humpy-bakit brig-by some of the locals. built in 1924 and opened december 3rd the same year by HRH the prince of wales. it bridges the river teviot, at the spetchmans pool, a few yards upstream from the cobble cauld. quite a few salmon and sea trout were lying in this pool, on the morning the photograph was taken. the trees are mostly limes and beech. in wilton lodge park, on a crisp-colourful autumn morning. hawick, scottish borders, scotland. view large
I love this old tree. It has so much character. I hope they leave it standing for a good while.

As you walk around the lake there is a grotto from which you get some beautiful views especially at this time of the year.
The Grotto, commissioned by Henry Hoare and built by Henry Flitcroft, was constructed in 1748. It is a large domed rocky chamber with anterooms lined with flint, pebbles and tufa.
