The Drip is an amazing gorge on the Goulburn River just north of Ulan and about 50km north of Mudgee.
The main part of the massive rock overhang is referred to as The Great Dripping Wall.
Water runs off from the surrounding hillsides & seeps through the rock & drips onto the the pools in the gorge.
Ferns cling to the rocks of the steep overhang and are constantly watered by the the water that drips down the top.
The track to The Drip is about 2.4km return, but it’s well worth exploring further downstream.
There is no track past The Drip area but you can explore by rock-hopping or by wading through the usually fairly shallow water.
There are sandstone cliffs with ferneries that cling to them, huge boulders, & gnarly twisted trees.

I'm in the process of moving everything over to a new hard drive, so I dug into the archives to find something to test Lightroom and Photoshop with, and this is what I found.
A dozen or two flew in over my shoulder and went immediately to cover, so I didn't know what they were, but they sounded familiar. Eventually, they came out for a drink, but mostly they just ran back and forth between the thick brush behind and to either side of the Drip. This one took his post in the shade of one of the Myoporum trees, and made sure that I wasn't a threat.
They are so well camouflaged and so good at holding perfectly still, that I didn't see them until they moved, which they did very slowly while they were in stealth mode, but like greased lightning when they were switching hiding places. I saw several juveniles for the first time at the bird bath and decided that they're nowhere near as beautiful as the adults, but I could tell that it won't be long before they are.
Come on, let your colors burst

Very busy afternoon, evening, and night, last night. We had three call-outs (actually, the third one was a re-call after the second one, when they thought that they'd found the subject, but hadn't) over a period of several hours. Roso got in the field for his first trailing search and trailed the subject for 2 1/2 miles before we were notified that the subject had been found - in Mexico. This was great news, because I wasn't up for going that far, even though I think Roso was. They assumed that the subject had either taken the trolly or a bus, and Roso lost scent at a bus stop, but we'll never know if he was right or not, since the subject has dementia and most likely didn't know where he went. Uncertainty is almost always a part of Search and Rescue.

For the first time, it was almost a bust, yesterday, at the Drip. Oh, well. I guess you can't win 'em all.
Think I'll go back today, only earlier in the morning, and see if that makes a difference. The problem with Cabrillo National Monument is that it doesn't open until 9:00 AM and closes at 5:00 PM.

She wears her heart on her sleeve throat. :) Pretty sexy, isn't it? Like a beauty mark. Oh, look! She's carrying drops in her feet! How cool is that? It must be that only hummingbirds can do that.
The Drip is quite a bit different now than it used to be, since they cut down all of the non-native plants, which consisted mostly of Myoporum trees. I stayed away for a long time since I heard that they had done that, for fear that I would be sad when I saw it. As it turned out, it wasn't that bad - the area is much more open, now, but there are still plenty of hiding places and I can get a few feet closer than before. The biggest irritation was all the noise that the tourists were making, but the birds must be somewhat used to that by now.
I was practicing with my Better Beamer, while sitting on the ground with my camera on my tripod at eye level, but there were few birds to shoot, which I attribute to the overcast conditions that were unable to keep the solar panel powered enough to keep the drip going at a steady pace. The birds seem to come around more when it's running continuously. At least, I'm looking forward to going back again, some day, when the weather is better.
Thank goodness this little guy's feet are normal, as you can see. He's such a cutie! Sometimes, he'll make a "fake" landing on the edge of the bath, then take off instantly, just to see if anything happens. Eventually, he'll stay long enough for a good bath. He'll often join other species.
Their crowns are usually not visible. I assume they only show up during breeding season... when they're not taking a bath.

Goulburn River National Park,
NSW, Australia.
The Goulburn River National park is 70,000 hectares of sandstone country following the river for about 90kms.
Eventually, the river flows into the Hunter River near Denham.
I was out at Gulgong photographing the Folk & Blues festival for the organisers.
The people who run it kindly provided me with accommodation in a motel for 3 nights.
The festival finished on the sunday night & I decided to head out on monday and explore the area.
After a hearty cooked breakfast & coffee at the Butchershop Cafe, I headed north.
The 1st stop was an area called Hands on the Wall which features Aboriginal artwork on some massive sandstone overhangs.
Its about 40kms north of Gulgong, and is worth a visit. The artwork is about 500m from the carpark.
The rest of the day I planned to explore the Goulburn River National Park including a beautiful area called The Drip.
The Drip is a picturesque area about 1.2kms walk along the river.
It features huge sandstone cliffs covered in lichen and ferns, majestic trees, and cool rockpools.
Its very popular with hikers, swimmers, photographers & painters (including Brett Whitely who camped there and painted some murals in the 70’s).
I spent a short time photographing The Drip, and cooled off in the refreshing water as it was about 35C so pretty damn hot.
I knew I would get better light later on, so I pushed on wanting to explore more of the Goulburn River.
At first I was rockhopping in my Teva sandals, but eventually decided it was easier to take them off and just wade through the calf to knee deep river water.
There hadn’t been much rain there recently so it was a bit dry. I’d love to see the river flowing more freely.
After good rain the river would be a great place to canoe, kayak, or even lilo along it.
I was alone from the time I left The Drip and didn’t see another soul along the river. I felt like I could be a million miles away from civilisation.
The river scenery had a timeless quality to it and you could almost feel the presence of the indigenous Wiradjuri people.
Apparently, there are a few hundred Aboriginal sites along the river.
There was a stillness in the area and it was unusually quiet, with the serenity only broken by the sound of the gentle breeze, the soft murmur of the water, and the occasional birdsong.
I followed the river for a few kms and around each bend was a lovely vista.
The light was a bit harsh in the middle of the day, so I waited for the sweeter late afternoon light before I got the camera out to take a few photos.
I got back to the car around dusk with a feeling of calm that I usually only experience after a deep meditation.
This is a special place and its unfortunate that part of the area (around The Drip) is under threat from coal mining.

Had a hard time identifying this one, until I read that the crown is often not visible.
You can't see it, but he has a single toenail in a tiny hole in the tube and that's the only thing keeping him from sliding down the tube.

It was a lot of fun watching the Hermit Thrushes bathe, last Saturday! They employ a technique that I've not seen before: they get down low in the water and shake, like other birds, but then they stand up and hold their bodies still, while their wings continue to flap for a few seconds. That must have been what produced this wonderful pattern, which of course, I didn't see until I opened the shots on my computer.
By the way, since I saw two of them together, does that mean that they weren't Hermit Thrushes?
A beginning birder (I knew he was a beginner because he was asking ME questions) standing next to me, had asked me about a Golden-crowned Sparrow, but I thought he was referring to the Golden-crowned Warbler, which usually doesn't have any gold on its cap, who was popping in and out from time to time. It wasn't until I got home that I realized that he was talking about this bird, because I never saw the gold while I was shooting.
This bird was another challenge to identify. The adults have a solid golden cap on top, bordered by two black stripes, so I was confused, since he has alternating gold and black stripes. Actually, I'm still not totally sure, so I welcome corrections. (I'll be embarrassed, but I'll still welcome them.)
The catchlight is a little weak in this shot, but that's because the sun was filtered by the trees behind and above me. The bird bath itself, was mostly in the shade, making it difficult to focus and causing the photos come out dark, but that's better than bright sun. It also helps to bring out the colors.
Like many of the old Edinburgh police boxes, this one in Tollcross has been converted into a mini-cafe, The Drip.
