water is central to the lives of the Tharis because of its scarcity. in the last 4 years the government has made a string of such watering points every few kilometers. these along with new roads are now transforming the region.

Camel ride at sunset

I just managed to catch some of the blow from the Bicheno Blowhole.

Ocean water crashes upwards through a hole in the rocky coast in Yachats State Park.

Kiama is renowned for its blowhole, just a few metres from the lighthouse, and when it's going off, it really is quite spectacular. However it's also often in quiet mode, much to the disappointment of visitors, but just a few kilometres south, the Little Blowhole is a smaller but more reliable performer. Here is the little version, performing very well just a couple of days ago with jets of water rising up to 10 metres above the rock platform, sometimes on successive waves, but on average producing a powerful jet about every third wave.

in Jaisalmer, my amorous hotel receptionist invited me to visit his family in the desert for free rather than take the popular, slightly expensive camel-trekking tours. I didn't agree until I found another woman to join.

These were Amir's friends who rocked up to join for tea as soon as we arrived.

Morning in the desert with Amir and the other tourist I convinced to come with us.

Mount Greylock Reservation is the highest elevation in Massachusetts. (3,492 ft) Herman Melville, looking north from his homestead, Arrowhead, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, imagined that the spine of Mount Greylock looked like the back of a great whale. Guess what inspired Melville to write his famous book Moby Dick?

Camping in the Thar desert in Rajasthan with the desert people. In the winter they move into permanent structures but in the summer months they bring their goats and cows into the desert and camp. The men work with their camels taking tourists on safaris. Even though this is a hard life by western standards, this is where they are happiest, living under the stars - which are amazing here. Before partition they would have roamed through the desert in both Rajasthan and Sind Province (now in Pakistan).

The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is a large arid region in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent that covers an area of 200,000 km² and forms a natural boundary between India and Pakistan. It is the world's 20th-largest desert, and the world's 9th-largest hot subtropical desert.

Brother and sister in the Thar desert, Rajasthan India

Last month i was travelling through Rajasthan, and this image was shot from the top of a sand dune in the Thar. We took the camels from Jaisalmer, to ride into the wilderness and was lucky enough to witness a crazy sunset. The windmills in desert horizon just adds to the drama here...
