This is the Stokkur Geyser, remarkable in that it blows at least once every 10 minutes. Not as big or predictable as "Old Faithful", but much more frequent. This was one of its largest blows while we were there, but we also saw much smaller ones.
The word Geyser is, in fact, Icelandic in origin.

Here's a new favorite shot from down here in New Zealand near Glenorchy. We took our photo group out one morning for a hike, and we pulled off the side of the road when we saw these beautiful lighting conditions. It's very unusual, and I don't often get to see this kind of morning light coming in under a heavy blanket of clouds…

For me, the thrill of seeing a whale gracefully appear out of the water, on an Alaska cruise, simply - takes my breath away. They are, to my mind, magnificent creatures. Isn't nature remarkable?
- WHALE BLOWHOLE
At the surface of the water, whales open their blowhole(s) and exhale air explosively through their blowhole. This exhaled air from the blowhole is called the blow and usually forms a gusher or a bushy stream of misty air and vapor. ... Whales cannot breathe through their mouths (like people can).
- HUMPBACK WHALES
Humpback whales. Coastal Alaska serves as feeding grounds for a population of 10,000 humpback whales that breed in Hawaii during the winter. Up to 60-feet long and 40 tons in weight, humpbacks are fabled for singing eerie and intricate “songs” while on their trans-Pacific journeys.
Amazing - simply amazing.
Thank you for your visits and kind comments.

During my road trip move from Texas to central Washington, I spent 3 days in Yellowstone National Park. I did not by any means spend enough time there, but I had an itinerary to stick to and it was summer. You know what summer is like in Yellowstone, right? That aside, I did manage to spend a day touring Upper Geyser Basin and had the opportunity to watch several geysers erupt, including these two here: Grand Geyser and Turban Geyser. I used my 100-400mm telephoto lens on my Canon 1DX Mk II to freeze the motion of these geysers.
I'm headed out there again in a week and will spend 9 days exploring the park. I've chosen the camera gear I'll take with me and now just need to clean things up and charge the batteries. Looking forward to some fall photography out there.

Multimillion dollar sand replenishment program at work on the Gold Coast. Building up the beaches before the cyclone season takes them away again.
Wind whips and pushes madly by us as we round a sharp bend in the valley of the Rio Paine, and begin to head due west toward Lago Dickson on the north side of Torres del Paine National Park, Chile.
On the map dispensed by the Park Service at the entrance station, there is a portentous symbol centered on the exact location of this photograph. The symbol is the stylized head of a man, looking vaguely Greek and godlike, with his cheeks puffed out, lips delivering mighty swirls of what is unmistakably wind. The evening of the previous day, at Campo Serón, I asked the man selling cans of beer how the map-making officials could be so sure that we would predictably encounter such mighty gusts? The conditions at camp were relatively calm, and such a dramatic change in so short a distance seemed a hard thing to reconcile. He laughed at me, and said, “Tomorrow, you will meet the wind.”
As it turns out, the cold air tumbling and sliding off the Hielo Sur and over the surface of Lago Dickson ends up following the path of least resistance, predictably enough. The Rio Paine flows west to east as it exits Lago Dickson, and after several miles, takes a sharp turn to the south through a pinch point in the landscape. It is here that the velocity of the ever moving air mass gathers to human-buffeting rates of 50-60 mph (80-100 kph) as it forces its way through the gaps in the hills. To deal with such fierce and constant company, what shrubs that manage to grow adopt growth forms of near perfect half-spheres, with foliage so small and dense as to be almost perfectly impenetrable to a human hand.
Truth be told, experiencing the wind like this inspired both of us to drop our packs, and simply play. The other two in our group were still some way behind us, and several hundred feet down, so there was ample time to quickly shed several decades of the outer veneer of maturity. When we discussed this moment recently over beers, my friend pointed out that he couldn’t remember another time in recent memory when he simply played for the sheer joy of it. And it truly was ridiculously fun leaping downhill off of rocks into the wind, then racing back uphill with the gale at our backs. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was quite difficult to even stand on a rock for more than a second or two. The balance and poise you see here is no small feat.

This is an image I processed for Down Under Challenge No. 1062 using Topaz IR ReMix, plus a variety of other filters. Cindy Mc's challenge image can be seen in the first comment. I got the eruption burst from Google Images.
The tail of the Tidelands Park whale in Morro Bay. Ubiquitous, but rarely wholly seen. Most just see the lifted tail as she sinks back under her grassy sea.
A tale told but rarely seen except by the very young.

Beautiful starry night in Joshua Tree National Park, CA, my spiritual home for photography, on a perfect night in mid-June. I met my friend Dave for dinner and then drove out to this picturesque area of the Park for the beginning of my photog adventure in this area. To the left of this photo was a strange humming sound, and as I walked closer, I realized that it was a giant bee hive. That area could wait for another time to explore. Time to walk to a different area and photograph! I lit the trees just a little with a ProtoMachines LED2 handheld flashlight during the exposure.

One of the best experiences of the trip to Iceland was the flight over Vatnojokull Glacier. The view of the creased and textured surface of the ice was unexpected and amazing.
The Thar Desert also known as the Great Indian Desert is a large, arid region in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent and forms a natural boundary running along the border between India and Pakistan. After a very rare heavy rainfall in the desert and the dramatic sunset with warm glowing light makes it even more beautiful.

The longer and deeper a whale dives the more air it takes in, and these whales were feeding in about 500 feet of water, staying down for up to 10 minutes when they sounded, so when they first resurfaced and blew it was quite impressive. The trick was to catch the action, as they could resurface anywhere, and if you were lucky they would be in position to have the sun really light up the spray.

The crew of Cumbres & Toltec K-36 #488 executes a lengthy, simultaneous blow-down from both sides of her firebox as she coasts across Lobato Trestle at MP 339.80, with the daily train from Antonito. The operation to clear the boiler's mudring of minerals and sediment is typically performed several times during the daily runs and is usually done when the locomotive is drifting downhill and steam pressure and water levels are not particularly critical.
Major crop. So I guess I did see a whale in Waikiki...I don't remember see it. Found this hidden among random shots of boats.
