People become oblivious to the world around them, and if the bus that suddenly appeared over the hill hadn't been stopping anyway, chances are they would have missed it.
Folded paper envelopes filled with typewritten notes called "letters" were once very common. They did require this thing called postage (or a stamp) so the postal service would deliver them. Emails and texts contain less effort and often less thought.
