In 1891 Monforts developed the first 24-roller napping machine (also called raising machine) which led to a significant improvement in the napping process. Only nine years after its founding, Monforts received the highest accolades at the World Fair in Chicago for the models exhibited there. A napping machine is for raising a nap on a fabric or textile.

 

The machine engineering company MONTFORTS was founded in 1884 by August Monforts who was born on 18 September 1850 in Gerderath on the Lower Rhine. In the year of founding, the company has 52 employees at the works in the Kronprinzenstrasse in Mönchengladbach.

Autoconer winding machine, made by Schlafhorst - Mönichgladbach. Schlafhorst - founded 1880 - is one of the many textile machine companies, which had to close after a long history. Schlafhorst for instance was a family run company for 125 years and once had 5000 employees.
