Tenacity

Artist Statement:

Life is a never-ending cycle; no matter what we undergo throughout life it continues to live. We are faced with new challenges and endeavors everyday that may directly affect our ability to carry on, yet we are in control of our actions. This control allows us to embrace the light at the end of the tunnel or hide behind the shadows.

Creative Process:

My work was beneficially influenced by the article “Making not knowing.” Having the understanding that it is futile to know the exact plan or solution for any new artwork allowed me to go with the flow. Initially my first inspiration came from Sandow’s materials collection. I knew I wanted to incorporate the “holey material” into my piece. I found most of my materials throughout my neighborhood and work place that were impractical to the original owner. I reconstructed the “holey material” with PVC piping I obtained. Considering my findings and coming to the conclusion I had many different shapes and sizes of cut wood I decided to make some type of abstract sculpture using these materials. By means of trial and error I constructed an object. The process of building this unknown object stimulated my concept. Many obstacles and challenges were faced, even though I was frustrated and distraught I was determined to successfully complete my project.

Color Connotation:

Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. This color represents determination, success, encouragement, and stimulation.

Someone was very determind that this building isn't going anywhere, even when it's neighbour was knocked down. Looks like it is still in use.

Those steps are not very forgiving - one slip and you're in the canal :)

Our big backyard willow died and I cut it down a few months ago and then drilled 12 one-inch holes and filled them with stump killer. Now that spring is here, it wants to come back to life. Oy. Maybe I should take this photo to Home Depot and get my money back.

Sectioned into stumps, they still grow after I had the maple cut down.

Actors Justin Ramsey and Brianna Bleymaier recreate a moment from Gardner-Webb University's 2010 production of "Exit the King" by Eugene Ionesco.

This tree is an icon for both the determination and the fragility of life on the west coast. It juts out alone over the face of the cliff with no others to help shield it from the wind, but it perseveres and gathers strength from the rock and the sun to weather another storm.
