Originally opened in the late 1960s, the building was designed as a modern academic facility for the University’s social sciences and named in honour of Adam Smith, the Scottish economist and philosopher whose work helped shape modern economic thought. Architecturally, it represents a confident post-war institutional style, contrasting deliberately with the surrounding historic fabric of the Old Town.

During the Festival, the building regularly sheds its academic identity and becomes a hive of performance activity, hosting multiple stages, rehearsal spaces, and audiences moving continuously through its interior. The banners and temporary façades visible here mark that annual transformation — a reminder of the Fringe’s ability to repurpose the city itself.

Ouvert à la fin des années 1960, l’édifice fut conçu comme un équipement universitaire moderne destiné aux sciences sociales, et baptisé en hommage à Adam Smith, philosophe et économiste écossais dont les travaux ont profondément influencé la pensée économique moderne. Son architecture institutionnelle d’après-guerre contraste volontairement avec le tissu historique environnant de la vieille ville.

Chaque été, à l’occasion du Festival, le bâtiment abandonne sa fonction académique pour devenir un lieu de création et de circulation permanente, accueillant spectacles, artistes et publics.
