This big sweet lug was found greeting customers at CVS/pharmacy where I work on Christmas Eve. I called the shelter and asked them to hold him for the required 72hrs in case his family was looking for him. Well, no one called...so the shelter told me his time was up. So, now he's here and I just may have an American Pit Bull Terrier dog rescue to take him. They specialize in placement of these bully breed dogs and are much better suited to the task than I. In the mean time, he's getting along great with all of our dogs (YAY!), he's awesome with people of all ages, and is just generally a well-behaved guy.

We're taking name ideas for him!!!

The TV is 200 pounds, so I needed to add some structural support. The price we pay for TRUE high-def... CRTs are friggin heavy...

A temporary bus stop in downtown Tigard. The hope is that a more permanent, sheltered, and comfortable stop will eventually be put in its place.

However, there hasn't been much consideration towards pedestrian and cycle access in this project so far. They've made cross walks longer, added car lanes, and added cement dividers that make it difficult to manuver transit buses.

This is where Tigger's bedding and house has ended up for now. Just beyond the trees on the left is the main gate, and on the far right you can see the gazebo where he hangs out most of the time. I kept his things in there because they stayed dry and clean longer, and because he really likes it, but the volunteers moved his stuff to the far side of the gardens, way too close to where a raccoon has taken up residence! It is easily 3-4 times his weight, and would do him harm were there to be a confrontation. Since the coon eats all Tigger's food, that could be likely, so I thought it best to move him over here for now! We have a permanent house for him in the works, and I will be painting it this week! Once it's in there, we will find the best place for it, and hopefully Tigger will have a permanent residence!

For the past three seasons I've had two nesting boxes in my back yard, within easy viewing of my desk window. Each year bluebirds have been among the lookers, but chickadees ended up with the closer box (shown in this series) and house wrens chose the other box, which was closer to the woods. Last year I moved the other box (not shown) away from the woods in hopes of discouraging the house wrens (which worked) and encouraging the bluebirds (did not work last year).

On Friday morning, SIX bluebirds showed up together to look over the real estate. I was able to capture an aerial battle at one of the boxes. If only my window had not been fogged over from the recent shower next door, I might have gotten better photos! Am posting them anyway.

Entire series is viewable at www.flickr.com/photos/30425804@N03/6822981271/in/photostream

Great site for learning about Eastern Bluebirds and how to encourage them: www.sialis.org/index.html

I already know one thing I am doing wrong: the opening faces northeast toward the house (so I can watch the comings & goings) rather than south as bluebirds prefer. Well, so far it's been good enough for the chickadees, and they've already been checking out the boxes for the upcoming nesting season. Keep an eye on my photostream to learn how it all works out.

To prepare for the winter season, a temporary shoulder is paved adjacent to Highway 1.

The Cicada has a lovely song. It is easily identifiable and lovely to hear.

Cicadas live underground as nymphs for most of their lives, at depths ranging from about 30 cm (1 ft) down to 2.5 m (about 8.5 ft). The nymphs feed on root juice and have strong front legs for digging.

In the final nymphal instar, they construct an exit tunnel to the surface and emerge. They then molt (shed their skins) on a nearby plant for the last time and emerge as adults. The abandoned exoskeleton remains, still clinging to the bark of trees.

Ignoring the capitalisation, grrrr, apparently there are no Vs allowed, probably something to do with being politically correct - V being a vicious animal snapping at your ankles or something.

I'd like to say I've found a trapezoid sign, alas, the door was at an angle. Still have a rhombic sign to find.
