In Poland, Fat Thursday is called tłusty czwartek. People purchase their favorite pastries from their local bakeries. Traditional foods include pączki (doughnuts), which are large deep-fried pieces of especially rich dough, traditionally filled with plum or rose petal jam (though others are commonly used) and topped with powdered sugar, icing, or glaze.] Angel wings (faworki) are also commonly consumed on this day.

I love soups! One of my favourites is Korean Pork Bone Soup. Owl of Minerva, close to home makes a great one that's rich in flavour, with a generous amount of meat and great tasting sides, including kimchi, bean sprouts, and more. Satisfyingly delicious!

I had a craving for Vietnamese Pho so I called up a friend and we headed over to Good Pho You in Ajax. I've wanted to try this place for quite a while.
We ordered their House Special Pho, their Rare Beef and Flank Pho, and their Fried Spring Rolls.
The spring rolls had good flavour, although they were a bit smaller than what I'm used to.
We had both ordered the medium-sized pho and it was good sized portions, with lots of meat and noodles. I would have preferred a bit more flavour in the broth but it was good. The meat was all perfectly tender and the noodles were also perfectly cooked.
Our server, Ingrid, was the perfect host! She checked on us several times and was quite friendly and engaging. Great service!

This is another one of those T-Bone Steaks that I got on sale recently. It turned out really good on my indoor grill! Although I would have preferred a thicker cut, I really can't argue with the price at only CDN$5.49/lb!
I'll be keeping my eye out for another great sale!

Dinner (and lunch tomorrow...). Smoked salmon devilled eggs, tomato/bsil/mozzarella/cucumber slices, baked brie with black garlic, wings, crab stuffed mushrooms, pizza jalapenos and mushroom turnovers... I do love food...
I do not normally eat cooked breakfasts but needed to visit my GP in town yesterday for some tests following surgery 5 weeks ago. While in town I decided to treat myself to what is known as an English Breakfast
Quesa-Birria Tacos
3 Crispy grilled corn tortillas stuffed with beef birria and melted mozza cheese finished with onion and cilantro, served with consomé (broth) on the side.

Cactus Cocina Mexicana is now open at their new Oshawa location at 253 Simcoe St S! They had previously operated in the nearby Oshawa Markets, offering Mexican cuisine. This new space is a significant upgrade, with nice dining spaces in a beautiful building.
I had their Quesa-Birria Tacos, a trio of grilled corn tortillas stuffed with beef, cheese, onions, and more, served with consomé on the side. It was colourful and attractively presented. It tasted great, with rich flavours!
I also enjoyed their Tres Leches Cake, a complimentary offer. celebrating their opening. It was really good, without being too sweet.
To wash it all down, I had a Mexican Coca-Cola, made with cane sugar, rather than corn syrup in North American versions. I preferred the taste.
Their menu has grown significantly since their flea market days, and is worth exploring. Check them out on Simcoe St S, just north of the current road construction zone. I'll definitely be back!

Beef Short Ribs with Honey Spice

A good friend of mine recently returned from an extended trip overseas and was craving some good food. With his teenaged daughter joining us, we headed to Caribbean Heat in Pickering for their delicious Guyanese Chinese food.
Their Chef's special, Alex Chicken, never disappoints. It's boneless stir-fried with onions and spices, with a little heat. Delicious!
We tried their Beef Short Ribs with Honey Spice and it was a winner, with just the right amount of sweetness and spices. A winner!
Vegetable Fried Rice was the perfect accompaniment. Very flavourful!
As usual, everything was delicious. The portions were more than generous enough to have leftovers, and the service was excellent!

I've been craving some Chinese BBQ so when I was in Markham, I had to go to one of my favourite places, HKS BBQ and Noodles House, located in the food court at First Markham Place.
I had my usual BBQ Duck and Roast Pork with Rice and Vegetables. It was so good, and did more than just fill the void. Very flavourful!
Although there is another similar spot just a couple stalls away, with a similar menu and lineup of waiting customers, HKS remains my favourite. There is, however, a new contender across the food court but they were closed during this visit. I may try them one day...

Sweet and Sour Pork Hocks is an old-school traditional Hakka Chinese dish that you may not find in many restaurants. Besides the pork hocks, key ingredients include ginger, a little bit of vinegar and sugar. I also like to add shiitake mushrooms, giving this dish an even more unique flavour. Would you try it?

What do you do with leftover veggie trays? Make a StirFry, of course!
There were quite a bit of leftover vegetables from a recent gathering at my uncle's, as well as some chicken skewers. Rather than let anything go to waste, I made a quick and tasty dish that was also healthy. Good dinner!

My friends from Vancouver were so impressed with Jumbo Lobster the last time they were in town, they made reservations before even arriving in Toronto this time! Of course, I was happy to join them.
We had learned from the previous visit that we ordered too much food and had lots of leftovers after stuffing our faces. We ordered less this time around, with seafood being the main feature.
Our meal started with a yummy soup of the day, made with chicken. Snow Peas Tips with Mushrooms,
Dungeness Crab with Salted Egg Yolk, and a very tender Ribeye Steak on a hot plate appeared next.
Lobster, the main feature, appeared next. Our set meal included two, with one stir-fried and the other deep fried with crispy garlic flakes and fries. That was followed by a Steamed Bass with green onions, and finally, a light jelly type of dessert.
Everything was absolutely delicious and we still had leftovers. The service was excellent, with attentive staff deboning and serving our fish, changing out our dirty plates, and more.
If you like seafood, Asian flavours, and fine dining, you need to experience this place at least once!

MY Restaurant, located just off Main St in Markham, is one of my favourite Chinese restaurants, offering great tasting food, great prices, and really good service. It's easy to recognize the value they offer with their combo menu, which includes soup and rice with their full-sized portions.
My uncle and I recently stopped in for lunch. We had their Sweet and Sour Pork, and Chicken with Black Bean Sauce. Both dishes were delicious and we finished it all, including the soup and rice. That's a pretty good deal for only CDN$27.50!
