While following this south bound empty Transkentucky, (TTI), coal train between yesterday's post at Flemingsburg Jct and this location at Myers, KY, I had missed quite a portion of railroad. Back when I chased this, it was completely unexpected and I was traveling in "dark territory". While using today's satellite imagery to track my locations, I see I missed a tunnel and a fairly large trestle. I'm pretty sure they must be highlights of the railroad. I'm not kicking myself in the ass, just wishing I had gone back for more!
TTI 5911 faces white trimed sisters - 5902 & 5918 outside TTI's 1918 built L&N roundhouse in a staged night photo session near the end of normal operations at Paris Kentucky - August 8th 2014.
Three years ago I posted a couple of photos of my one and only visit to the Trans Kentucky, or TTI. I noticed they are horrible scans, so back to the drawing board with my newest machine. For the next few days I'll be posting some shots from that morning.
TTI was a subsidiary of CSX that hauled coal from Paris, KY to a barge load-out at Maysville. During my February 1992 drive across the country while following the old C&O mainline along he Ohio River westward, I stumbled across 12 U-Boats working at the Maysville load-out. I followed the first run of empties south.
This train was just showing up at Maysville with it's assortment of GE power.

We now get to the line up of all 12 U-Boats. The job on the left is now shoving toward town to meet the junction of the TTI. There it will reverse direction and head south while the job on the right continues to work the barge load-out.
The structures on the left have since been demolished.

Zug: Paris - Venedig
Aufnahmeort: Gossensaß, Südtirol, Italien

Four TTI GE B36-7's haul a loaded coal train along the Ohio River on the former C&O Huntington - Cincinnati mainline. With the shutdown of multiple mines and the general downturn in the coal industry the future for TTI looks bleak.
A pair of TTI B36-7s pose for the cameras on a hot summer evening in Paris in 2014. The war on coal was in full swing at the time, and in 2016 it was announced that coal has lost the battle. As of now, the TTI is idled and all of those nifty GEs are stored and the TTI employees are waiting for better times to return.
Thanks go out to the fine folks at TTI and CSX for allowing this night session; my thoughts and prayers are with you guys for the return of coal and the good times.
Roll Coal.
