The Kiowa call it Tso-i-e, "Rock Tree." They have a story, which I won't recount here, involving a bear, tree, five children, and Tso-i-e.
I brought my students here in 2016, hoping they would see a good sunrise. This was what they got.
Shunga-tser Tso, which was previously a grassland was formed by a massive earthquake in this region resulting in the formation of the Lake.
The remains of the earthquake can be seen in the number of dead trees within the Lake, which gives the Shunga-tser its unique character.
The lake with picturesque snow-capped mountains & pine trees all around is a sight which is sure to be etched in one's memory for life.
Sangetsar Tso Lake near Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.Located at around 12000 feet above sea level close to the China border, this lake is considered holy by Buddhists.Apparently this area was earlier a pine forest and the lake was located some distance away. Then an earthquake and the resulting tectonic plate shift caused the lake to move here and submerge the pine woods. The dead tree trunks that stand like eerie sentinels in the middle of this picturesque lake are remnants of the those woods. The place looks like a scene from some beautiful dream. As I stood by the edge of this lake with prayer flags fluttering above me and tiny bells put up by Buddhist pilgrims tinkling in the distance I felt as if I had been transported to some place in paradise. It was a sublime experience.
A song sequence from the Bollywood movie Koyla(1997) starring Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan was shot here and therefore the lake is also known as Madhuri lake.

salt lake The lake lies at an elevation of 4,718 m, and has a surface area of 1,870 square kilometres. It is the highest salt lake in the world, and largest salt lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region. However, it is not the largest salt lake in the Tibetan Plateau. That title belongs to KokoNor མཚོ་སྔོན་ མཚོ་ཁྲི ་ཤོར་རྒྱལ་མོ་ (almost twice the size of Namtso). Namtso has five uninhabited islands of reasonable size, in addition to one or two rocky outcrops. The islands have been used for spiritual retreat by pilgrims who walk over the lake's frozen surface at the end of winter, carrying their food with them. They spend the summer there, unable to return to shore again until the water freezes the following winter. This practice is no longer permitted under the Communist Chinese regime in Tibet. www.footprinttravelguides.com/c/2848/tibet/&Action=pr...

TSO KAR is a salt lake in the southern part of Ladakh (Himalayas), 160km south of Leh, at an altitude of 4,530m.
The mountains surrounding the lake reach 6,000m.
Until a few years ago the lake was an important source of salt, which the Changpa nomads used to export to Tibet.
The climate here is harsh. In winter, temperatures below -40 °C are not uncommon. In summer the temperature rises above 30 °C, with extreme fluctuations during the day. Precipitation in the form of either rain or snow is extremely rare.
An unforgettable journey.
