The VS-3 should be installed with the circuit components up. The DRU-3A comes with shielding around it.

CF1 and CF2. Note the extensive corrosion on CF2, this causes the static crashes so common on this radio.

I had replaced the cover on CF1 as there was no sign of corrosion, however it didn't work when powered up so had also to be replaced.

After replacing the three suspect filters in the main receiver, the static crashes were gone. I did not change out the second receiver at this time.

First filter after lifting out the loose parts of the filter, only the "Flags" remain.

Flags cut off to assist in desoldering - not recommended. Leave them on!

Steve came over for an antenna project and brought his Kenwood TS2000 with him. Very impressive rig. Hooked it up to the dipole and made a CW (morse code) contact in Big Sandy, Texas (K5KQK ) on less than 250 milliwatts. Thats less than a quarter of a watt. QRPP. Amazing.
