Yeah, I shoot this lake a lot, but why wouldn't I? A spectacular location like this deserves the attention.
These spectacular clouds and light are brought to you by the Eastern Sierra and her annual summertime monsoonal weather system. The conditions were a dream, and come hell or high water, I WILL make it back there next year for more of this jaw dropping display.
During a brief break between waves of the first snow storm of the season while up in the Eastern Sierra late last year.
In the Alabama Hills of California's Eastern Sierra. Mt Whitney is there, but is obscured by the heavy cloud cover on the middle left.
Enjoying the golden hour to blue hour transition while out and about in the local Southern California moutains.
Our air quality in Southern California is really rather pants at the moment, what with all of the wildfires burning out of control and what not... Though it did make for a rather mysticaly moody view from our local mountains this past weekend.
Sadly, because of the recent wildfires, this area of my local wilderness will be off limits to the public until mid 2022...
Brutal.
I miss it already.
A winter storm moves in on the Eastern Sierra (McGee Creek), even as fall is weeks away from its zenith.
Full disclosure that I did replace the sky in this shot. The original, while of the same color as the replacement, was sans clouds and devoid of any and all texture. I loved the experience of taking this shot, but I really wanted a slightly more compelling sky, so I added one in.
So this shot is off a Lumix Micro 4/3 LX100 camera (in my opinion one of the best "pocketable" cameras ever made) that kicks out images that are about 12 (ish) megapixels natively. With a technique called Super Resolution I was able to use a little image stacking (among other photoshop techniques) to produce an image that is 49+ megapixels in dimension (with a level of fine detail resolution more equivalent to a 24 megapixel image, which is still VERY printable).
I just loved this view from up in the Eastern Sierra. I was out looking for sunsets light and was over near the hot springs when the sun dipped below this little hill and cast a brilliant golden glow on the monsoonal clouds that were rolling in (we got stormed on for the next two days). This is an 8 or 9 shot panorama that I stitched together in Camera RAW to show the breadth and grandure of the scene.
As self serving as it may be to describe ones own work with some sort of superlative, the light on this particular late afternoon while up in the Eastern Sierra was simply top shelf.
We were roaming about looking for compositions and enjoying the weather as the snow storm rolled into the area. Every time I took my gloves off to manipulate my camera was a new adventure in and of itself (I don't think my knuckles have ever been so chapped).
But the light here...
As it streamed through the clouds and between the crests it filled me with a warmth that couldn't be trampled by the wind chill factor. It was a sublime vision.
An hour later everything was turning white as the first snow of the season fell across the Eastern Sierra.
The incoming weather and sunsets light played off of each other here in such a way that was too good to pass up. I feel so lucky to have been here at this time to see these conditions.
...Lake, that is. From mid-summer last year as I was out and about hunting for some great light and cloud conditions.
Full disclosure - this is a composite shot.
I did capture this image, and I did capture video of this area, from a slightly different angle, that caught the lightning bolt. I was just that neither was as compelling by themselves as both could be together.
Sadly I had to cancel plans up in the Eastern Sierra for this week because of the out of control wildfires currently destroying the state.
Man, I hope it gets better soon.
"The very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. It’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us."

No, this is not a drone shot. While hiking up the Crystal Lake trial in the Eastern Sierra I was treated to this view overlooking Lake George. The awesomely moody clouds were from a summer monsoonal storm getting ready to pound the area with rain, thunder, and lightning the next day.
I love the way light plays on the undulating terrain of the mountains. The Eastern Sierra is a spectacular place to spend ones time.
