this is an eight-disk raid6 with 6 terabytes of storage. the machine locked up and md reported six failed drives, but it was recoverable after a tedious and time-consuming rebuild & resync operation.

this is a smaller and simpler problem - a hard disk in this 1.5 terabyte raid has actually failed. at least i can still use it, but i'd be much happier given time to procure and install a spare before working.
