Very strong & gusty southerly winds & rain were observed as this strongly awaited atmospheric river/storm system’s main cold front made ‘landfall’ in the Bay Area. This was indeed the strongest storm so far this season for the region. Conditions outside looked like a tropical storm! Certainly, this was a stormy night for the region. The Sierras were also looking at feet of snowfall before all this is said & done. This evening was just the 1st part of the storm. More heavy rain & wind was in store for the state over the next day or two as this atmospheric river was forecast to inch back north towards the South Bay the very next day... Things would finally die down by Friday. Stay safe out there, everyone! (Video taken Tuesday evening, ‎January ‎26, ‎2021)

*Weather forecast/update: A strong Pacific storm, or atmospheric river, was expected to bring periods of moderate to heavy rain to the region. This system was forecast to arrive by Tuesday (Jan 26) & was to bring periods of heavy rain & high winds. This will likely result in an increased risk of mudslides over steep terrain, debris flow over wildfire burned areas, as well as localized ponding of water in low-lying areas. Up to 3 inches of rain was expected in urban areas & 3-7 inches possible over higher terrain. The entire area from Napa south thru Monterey & San Benito Counties would get a good soaking from this atmospheric river. Latest model guidance suggests the coastal slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains & Big Sur look to be the primary target of the heaviest rain. On top of this, a high wind watch was also in effect during the period. South winds 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50-60 mph are possible. North Bay, San Francisco Bay Shoreline, East Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains, and the South Bay will all be affected. Timing of the strongest winds are forecast to happen Tuesday evening thru Wednesday morning as this strong system’s cold front sweeps thru. Damaging winds can blow down trees & power lines which may result in power outages… Stay tuned to the latest forecast for the most up-to-date weather info online…

This shot was taken on the way up to Big Bear, CA. It was edited in Lightroom for Color. You'll see more Big Bear in the upcoming weeks.\

Some of you may have noticed in the past few weeks that I've been talking about some difficulties I've been having getting Lightroom 5 installed. I've spent almost 10 hours on the phone with Adobe support and it all came to a crux yesterday when the individual helping me decided to go through my system's registry and remove any Adobe Lightroom entries. Knowing that this could (a) screw up my current install of Lightroom 3.6 and (b) really cause my machine some major issues I tried to get some sort of assurance out of the technician who was helping me. He promised me that the issue would be fixed that day, and that he would stay with me, call me back if we got disconnected, etc.

Long story short, editing the registry didn't work. And my technician at this point hung up the phone. So I spent the next half hour assessing the damage done to my machine and realized that I was done with this whole mess. So I moved all of my data onto a second drive, and reinstalled Windows 8, from scratch.

Remarkably the Windows 8 install went flawlessly - all the drivers were automatically downloaded (even though I self built my machine), and Lightroom 5 installed without a hitch. However, when I opened my old library Lightroom had an issue locating all of my old files.

I was overtaken by a wave of hysteria for the next half hour- and simply couldn't believe that I had lost thousands upon thousands of files. I thought that I had always imported them onto my second drive when in reality they were on the first. It took me a full half hour before I finally realized that I had backed up those files, and luckily recovered next to everything.

SO: yesterday I ended up reformatting my computer, finally getting Lightroom 5 installed, and experienced the full range of human emotions.

Long story short: Adobe support sucks

An enhanced-color view, this image covers a 350 by 750 kilometer swath across the surface of Jupiter's tantalizing moon Europa. The close-up combines high-resolution image data with lower resolution color data from observations made in 1998 by the Galileo spacecraft. Smooth ice plains, long fractures, and jumbled blocks of chaos terrain are thought to hide a deep ocean of salty liquid water beneath. Though the ice-covered alien ocean world is outside the Solar System's habitable zone, new studies show the potential chemistry driving its oxygen and hydrogen production, a key indicator of the energy available for life, could produce amounts comparable in scale to planet Earth. Hydrogen would be generated by chemical reactions of the salty water in contact with the rocky ocean floor. Oxygen and other compounds that react with hydrogen would come from Europa's surface. There water ice molecules would be split apart by the intense flux of high-energy radiation from Jupiter and cycled into the Europan ocean from above. via NASA

This overhead vista was my view last night while I stood along the centreline of the Braidwood Road near Nowra, Australia. A fierce wind was blowing through the area making the camera shake a little, but the sky was very clear and satisfyingly dark.

Our solar system’s most massive planet, Jupiter, is the bright light in the trees on the left of the shot. Shining with an unmissable orange glow over on the right is Mars, about ten days away from its closest approach to Earth in 15 years. On average, Mars is the fifth-brightest object visible to our eyes in the night sky, but from July through September this year it will be brighter than the third-place holder, Jupiter.

The dusty-looking, colourful streak running between these two bright planets, stretching from the top to the bottom of my photo, is the edge-on view we have of our home galaxy, the Milky Way. A third planet, Saturn, is hiding amongst this strip of stars, dust and dark gas that marks the winter nights here in Australia.

This image is a single-frame shot, captured with a Canon EOS 6D camera, a Samyang 14mm XP lens @ f/2.8, for an exposure time of 25 seconds @ ISO 6400.

After chasing a coal train up to Shay Maine, I stopped at the location of the former Illinois Traction System's Substation at Loveless.

The framework of the building itself is still in great shape, even if all the components for generating electric are long gone. What I believe to have been duct work for cooling fans (I imagine it get quite hot inside when things were humming along...) on top of the build are now starting to rust and topple. Not bad considering that stuff was probably last used at least 50 years ago.

I took the chance to take several details shots inside and out and will be posting them over the next few days.

The demand for "all round" testers, i.e. being able to test the system's functionality through traditional testing methods and being able to show some technical knowledge is growing. Computer applications are more complex these days with technologies like android and also with lots of smart phone apps. The more complex the front ends, the back ends are even more intricate. So, it is all the more important to learn about Database Testing and be able to validate the databases effectively to ensure secure and quality databases.
