HMM- the macro mondays group's theme for today is cutter. it doesn't actually cut per se, but it symbolizes a sword that might have been used to cut in a major way by the scots in war. i measured this and it is 2 and 3/4ths of an inch long and is my favorite possibility for the day. - so there's probably no need to dither!!
dang, taking it into picmonkey to crop and clone

With the longest bill relative to body size of any bird in the world, this insane hummingbird makes the top of the "most wanted" list for most people. It occurs at high elevations above 8,000 feet in the Andes Mountains from Venezuela to Bolivia, where it feeds on deep tubular flowers. Hacienda El Bosque, Colombia
Taken in Ecuador during my stay at San Jorge Eco-Loges.

The Sword-billed Hummingbird is a charismatic species from Andean South America. It is found from Venezuela and Colombia in the north to Bolivia in the south. The species belongs to a monotypic genus, Ensifera, and is quite different from all other hummingbirds; metallic green and bronzed overall, with a black bill that is slightly upcurved and longer than the body length. This is the only bird species with a bill length that exceeds the body length. When seen perched, the species usually holds its bill quite upright, presumably because of balance issues stemming from this long and relatively heavy structure.

One of the most incredible species of hummingbird out there. We love that we get to see it on a number of our different bird photography expeditions in South America.
Take a look at that tongue in action!
This individual was photographed in the cloud forests of Ecuador, February 2023.

Isn’t that bill amazingly long! What a species to see!! A sighting of a Sword-billed Hummingbird is a highlight of any visit to its mountainous habitat in the Andes of South America. Not surprisingly, it is the only member of its genus. That long bill enables it to take nectar from flower species with long corollas, such as Passionflower. The bill is also used to take insects in flight, an example of avian dexterity. Given its bill length, preening is done with the feet. As shown in this image, when at rest the bill is held angled upward. This is a large species of hummingbird, weighing between 10-15 grams (about a third to a half of an ounce). This individual was seen at the Observatorio de Colibries, a private sanctuary at higher elevation east of Bogota, Colombia.

Ensifera ensifera (Sword-billed hummingbird / colibrí picoespada)
The sword-billed hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera), also known as the swordbill, is a neotropical species of hummingbird from the Andean regions of South America.
Among the largest species of hummingbird, it is characterized by its unusually long bill, being the only bird to have a beak longer than the rest of its body, excluding the tail. It uses its bill to drink nectar from flowers with long corollas. While most hummingbirds preen using their bills, the sword-billed hummingbird uses its feet to scratch and preen due to its bill being so long.
