The memorial complex is constructed on the artificial island that is located on the river Svislach. The Island of Tears is situated in the historical place that is the center of Minsk, and it is one of the main sightseeing points. The monument was built in 1985, when the war was still ongoing, while the complex was officially opened on the 3rd of August 1990.

THIS AESTHETICAL BEAUTIFUL monument in Minsk commemorates the Soviet soldiers from Belarus who died in the long war with Afghanistan in the 1970s. At the base are several huge statues depicting weeping or stoical women, who express the pain and sadness of the mothers, sisters, and wives of their generation. It’s a very striking memorial, which benefits from its picturesque location on a small island in the river Svislach

The Trinity Hill is the oldest surviving district of Minsk, although it's not part of the downtown, rather a suburb, hence another name, Trinity Banlieu (Trojeckaje Pradmiescie). The historic neighbourhood sprawls along the left bank of the Svislach River in the southeastern part of the modern city. The Belarusian 5-ruble bill features an image of Trayetskaye Pradmestsye. The district takes its name from the Trinity Convent, of which little remains. The first Roman Catholic church in Minsk, the Ascension Monastery, the church of Sts. Boris and Gleb, and a synagogue have also disappeared. This is an area of 19th-century housing, mostly restored after the ravages of World War II. Modern buildings include the national opera and ballet theatre and the Island of Tears memorial.

Svislach flows through Minsk, the capital of Belarus.

Остров Мужества и Скорби, также остров слёз — мемориал, посвящённый белорусским воинам-интернационалистам, павшим в Афганистане в 1979—1989 гг.

This is Victory Park in Minsk, and the body of water on the right is Lake Komsomolskoye, an artificial widening of the Svislach River. The entertainment that my hosts had arranged for this evening was a cycle ride using yellow bicycles just like the ones seen here. They're the kind that have no gears or brakes, so you have to pedal backwards to stop the machine. I'd never ridden a bike like this before, and it took a bit of getting used to. We set out from the centre of Minsk and kept going until we reached the edge of the city, then turned around and came back again - a round trip of 29 Km. This shot was made at a photo stop quite early on in the proceedings, when I had no idea we'd by cycling quite that far, but it was a great way to see the city. The large Belorussian flag you can see flying in the distance reputedly continues to flutter even when there is no wind blowing.

About the Subject

Stanisław Bohusz Siestrzeńcewicz, or Stanisłaŭ Bohuš-Siestrancevič (Belarusian: Станіслаў Богуш-Сестранцэвіч, 1731–1826) was a Belarusian who became the first bishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Mohilev (Mogilev), an Archbishop from 1784 and a prominent member of the Russian Academy (1807), who had earlier converted from Calvinism.

Stanisław Bohusz Siestrzeńcewicz was born in Zanki, Troki Province (now Svislach District Grodno Region). His father was a Calvinist. Stanisław studied at the Slutskaya Calvinist School [pl], and later at the University of Frankfurt. After traveling through Europe, he visited Amsterdam and London, and served in the Prussian Infantry and the Lithuanian Cavalry. In 1761, he retired with the rank of captain.

He then worked as a tutor for the Radziwiłł family, at which point he converted to Catholicism. In 1762, Siestrzeńcewicz developed a course of theology in Warsaw.

In 1763, he received holy orders. He served as rector in Gomel and Bobruisk and later, a canon in Vilnius. On 2 July 1773, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Mallus. On 3 October 1773, Monsignor Gyultsen, representing the Bishop of Smolensk, officially consecrated him as a bishop. After that, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Vilnius, which was ceded to Russia. In early December 1773, Catherine II announced the creation of a Belarusian Catholic diocese with headquarters in Mogilev and Siestrzeńcewicz's appointment as Belarusian bishop.

The newly appointed bishop observed all Latin Rites in Russia (including Moscow and Saint Petersburg). In 1774, Siestrzeńcewicz brought a printing press to Mohilev in order to publish spiritual and secular literature. On 14 February 1782, Catherine II transformed the diocese to the Belarusian Archdiocese of Mohilev and Siestrzeńcewicz became Archbishop. He took office after a ceremony on 20 February 1782. From this year until the end of the century, he lived in Mohilev.

His appointment was made without the consent of Pope Pius VI, and in 1783 an extraordinary ambassador of the Holy See, Giovanni Andrea Archetti, was sent to Saint Petersburg settle the conflict. Following the talks, in exchange for certain concessions, the pope approved Siestrzeńcewicz's nomination and the post of archbishop and handed him the pallium on 22 February 1784.

In 1783, he founded the theater in Mohilev. From 1798 to 1800, he chaired the collegium of the Catholic Justice Department. From 1801 to 1810 he was Chairman of the Catholic Theological Board. He died in 1826 at the age of 95. He was buried in St. Stanislaus Church, Saint Petersburg.

Franciszek Smuglewicz, or Pranciškus Smuglevičius,[1][2] 6 October 1745 – 18 September 1807) was a Polish-Lithuanian draughtsman and painter. Smuglewicz is considered a progenitor of Lithuanian art in the modern era.[1] Some consider him as a spiritual father of Jan Matejko's school of painting.[citation needed] His brother was Antoni Smuglewicz.

About the Artist

Biography

Franciszek Smuglewicz was born in Warsaw into a Polish-Lithuanian family.[1] His father, Łukasz Smuglewicz, also a painter,[3] had moved to Warsaw from the Lithuanian province of Samogitia.[citation needed] His mother, Regina Olesińska, was the niece of painter Szymon Czechowicz.[4][3] In 1763 Franciszek journeyed to Rome, where he began the study of fine arts under the tutorship of Anton von Maron. He stayed in Rome for 21 years, where he embraced the Neo-Classical style.

In 1765 he received a royal scholarship from the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania Stanisław August Poniatowski and was admitted into the Saint Lucas Academy. As a colleague of Vincenzo Brenna he participated in cataloging artifacts from Nero's Domus Aurea. In 1784 he returned to Warsaw, where he founded his own school of fine arts, one of the predecessors of the modern Academy of Fine Arts.

A classicist, but under strong influence of the Polish baroque,[citation needed] Smuglewicz became a notable representative of historical paintings, a genre that dominated the fine arts of Poland throughout the 19th century. Around 1790 he started working on a series of sketches and lithographies inspired by Adam Naruszewicz's History of the Polish Nation. Although never finished, this series gained him much popularity.

In 1797 he moved to Vilnius, where he became the founder and the first deacon of the Institute of Sketch and Painting at the Academy of Vilnius.

In 1801 he painted allegorical ceiling paintings for Tsar Paul I at his new imperial palace, the Mikhailovsky Castle, in St Petersburg, which was also designed by Brenna.[5]

A tutor of generations of Polish-Lithuanian painters, Smuglewicz devoted himself to historical paintings in the latter years of his life. He brought to Lithuania classical ideas and views of enlightened classicism. He painted everyday life, and the architecture of Vilnius in a realistic manner. His works helped with the ongoing reconstruction of the Royal Palace of Lithuania in Vilnius.

Among the notable surviving works of that period are A Meeting of the Four Years' Sejm (1793) and Kościuszko's Oath at Kraków's Old Town Market (1797), Lithuanian Peasants, Freeing Peasants from Serfdom in Merkinė.[2] Among his works of the period are views of the city walls and city gates that were demolished during the 19th century.

He was buried in Vilnius at Rasos Cemetery (Polish: Cmentarz na Rossie), although the exact location is not known.
