Blueland - Refill is the new recycle! This is one of the topics I do research in and I can vouch that these types of services have lower environmental impact than single use packaging, as long as the reusable package (like your metal water bottle) is actually reused. They ship you the dry tablets and then you add water to create the various household cleaning products. Environmentally, that means we're not creating transportation related greenhouse gasses by shipping water around the country. That's a silly thing to do. Yes that's Fred the cat sprawled out in background.
With product packaging, doing what is best for the Earth also saves money.
Sustainable packaging needs to use recyclable materials drawn from sustainable sources, and needs to be designed intelligently to be efficient in materials and functionality. If it can be re-used as is, like your personal water bottle, all the better.
Improving consumer product sustainability is a lot about the "nuts and bolts" of product design and production, and packaging is one area where we can expect a tremendous amount of innovation in the next 5 years.
If you've ever received a gift bag it was likely stuffed to the gills with tissue paper. And what happens to that tissue? It usually is thrown out.
Don't trash, recycle it! Most tissue is recyclable, including the tissue in this picture. What's more, this tissue is made from 70% recycled content.
We worked with Dagoba Organic Chocolate to find a sustainable package design that's also unique. Our Distant Village artisans handmade this Banana Paper Packaging in the photo. Creating some banana covered chocolate!
We're out to change the perceptions that the general public has toward packaging. Packaging can be beautiful and friendly to the environment, what we call eco-chic.
Every item in this picture is sustainable. The totes are fashioned from 100% bamboo fibers, a resource that can be grown & harvested in 5 years.
The plastics are biodegradable bags, in a landfill they would degrade into carbon and CO2 within a few years.
And the paper bags, boxes and ribbon are made from post-consumer recycled materials that are recyclable.
