The surgery itself went well, but I caught double-pneumonia COVID while there 4 days later, and had to be taken in an ambulance to a special covid unit for 14 days, then to a rehab facility for 16 days after that to build up some strength and breathing... It was pretty bad. I'm finally home, but still have a long way to go - but am much better than I was.
Lori Hibbett had spinal fusion surgery on December 28, hopefully will be able to get back out in time for our Yosemite workshop in mid-February and our Death Valley workshop at the end of February!.

Greetings! I'm still alive. Long story, but I suffered a head injury in 2022 (because everything awful happened in 2022) that has affected my vision long term. I have 3 procedures on my eyes coming up this year. The last one will be invasive eye muscle surgery to correct strabismus (fancy term for double vision).
Until then, I won't be in SL. I cannot see properly. I'm only on my computer for things like taxes and vital things. SL, it turns out, it's not as vital as being as present as I can be for my family.
Meanwhile, I have my three cats and my very old dog, Farkus. I'm taking life a day at a time. My liver disease is stabilizing slowly. There have been good signs and then new things crop up. One thing that is tiring is having to explain "No, this was not caused by excessive drinking." I mean, alcoholism is a disease that can cause liver disease. I have an auto-immune disease that has caused liver disease. Why do we harshly judge people that do suffer from alcoholism in the first place, that those of us who got to the same place by another route feel defensive?
Anyway, enough blathering. Still alive, eyes suck, but I'm reasonably well.

I ask in Your name that her healing is painless and swift, Give her the patience Lord to deal with all of the changes in her day to day life. She is your Child Lord God and I ask all in Your Precious Name....Amen.....and remember when two or more gather in HIs name miracles happen.

*This is a re-edit of photos taken this summer. I have a bad habit of rushing edits on photos that I'm really excited about and not taking the time to do them right. You can look at the old one if you'd like, but I'd prefer you not. I won't delete it though. ;)
This was stop #1 of a planned four stop vacation out west, starting in the Black Hills and ending in Shoshone National Forest, however, it became the only stop after car issues necessitated returning home rather than risk breaking down on a remote road in the Bighorn Mountains. This is the end result of a total of 5-6 images taken on Black Elk Peak over the course of about five hours. The foreground shot (including the peaks in the distance) was taken shortly after sunset while there was still enough light to capture the details in the rock (ISO 640), and then hours later, I captured the stars in several different shots at ISO 6400 at 20 seconds each. It was a bit of guessing to line up the shots after such a long time between the shots, and the result required quite a bit of Photoshop surgery to hide the seams and make things look right. Unfortunately, the level of wind between when I hiked up and when the Milky Way was out made planting my gear in one spot impossible/reckless.
I was blown away at how the dark the skies were here, and how visible the Milky Way was to the naked eye. I've been photographing the Milky Way for some time now, but I've never seen it so clearly. I am very bummed that I wasn't able to get out to Wyoming for the second leg of this trip, the second stop I had planned out would've been even darker and more remote.
Still, I am very satisfied with this photo and it was a rewarding experience getting to the summit and weathering the elements to get it.

This male Horned grebe displays his breeding plumage well. Thanks Heather for the location. This was my first outing since eye surgery. Located on a small pond North of St.Albert Alberta.
This sweetheart (Grandpup) had hip replacement surgery and is on the mend, she can’t come out of her kennel for good until Feb 1st, just in time for her to leave for HI. She’s doing very well.

The old surgical lamp, the 2 tiled operating tables and the old side tables for medical instruments that were still standing here years ago and were a special highlight for photo shoots, have found their way out ... from whoever. Now, surgery is more and more like a skeleton.
Only the unique architecture is reminiscent of the days when it was still operated here.

I had surgery on my ACL two months ago. Stuck in my mother's basement for two weeks. Experiencing life without the ability to be mobile was terrible. There were limitations on my ability to do basic things, such as using the washroom. The first couple days after my surgery, I could not sit down on the toilet.
Something you barely think about every day was causing me insane pain. I was struggling with things I usually encounter on a normal day and never think about on a regular basis . My experience has brought to my attention the struggles people with disabilities have every day. I learned from my short experience that society is not designed to accommodate people with physical impairments.
During my rehabilitation, I had to go to my university campus. Around campus, you can see automatic door openers everywhere. When I needed to use those automatic door opener, I realized the poorly designed locations for those buttons. For a few weeks, I experienced life without my legs properly functioning, and it was mentally exhausting to cope with my limitations.
After this experience, I want to advocate for people with physical disabilities rights to have built to accommodated their needs. I could start by complaining to my university about the poorly designed buttons. I acknowledge I cannot change every building, but at least I can do something.
As for this image. It was photographed a month after my surgery. I just started to be able to walk with a limp. I was going to take a picture with my boyfriend which was going to be inspired by the movie Signs. But it ended up looking like a cheesy family picture. This image is an outtake. Something I did not planned on making. I don't really like this picture but it's a stamp of my experience.

Hobi is a male Siberian Husky who is almost 8 years old. Last Friday, he had surgery to remove a large cyst on his tail that was becoming infected. He's healing well, but he's been on pain meds (which have caused some unpleasant diarrhea), and of course he hates that cone! You might think Hobi is angry in this photo, but in fact he was curiously watching me brace myself awkwardly against the kitchen cabinets for this low shutter speed shot (no tripod handy).

No chloroform no worries just keep hitting the patient on the head with this book until they are unconscious and hack away.
Fun for the whole family.
Once you have finished volume one don't forget to buy volume two next month which tells you how to put your patients/parents organs back in.
Well here we go again, all I said to my daughter was I had a headache and look where it gets me.
She is so creative and the mind of a genius and all thanks to this wonderful book.
Now I only have to lay here until next month and she can put me back together, hoorah, still less waiting time than the NHS :)

I have had this shot in mind for quite a while now and finally got round to it.
All the hospital equipment was bought from my local ASDA store which included.

►sausages, mince, tomato ketchup and tomato puree
The doctors top was the spare one from my chef shots.
The surgical gloves and face mask where from EBAY.
The Stanley knife from my toolbox.
The book from my book collection.
The patients cap is actually the flash diffuser for my beauty dish.
This shot was setup in my kitchen with me lying on our dining table with white background paper on my background stand.
The main light was my Elemental 600 to camera left set to 1/4 power and with a beauty dish.
To light the backdrop I used my other Elemental 600 set to 1/2 power and my Nikon SB600 also set to 1/2 power and 50mm.
The kitchen window was to camera right which acted as a fill and also I used a silver reflector to camera left to bounce some of that natural light back into my face.
The flashes where fired off camera using my Yongnuo RF-602 trigger + receivers.

My son immediately following open heart surgery to replace his RV-PA conduit. As a parent, there's not much that can prepare you for a sight like this. Thankfully, it was a complete success. He could even sit up later that evening, and was discharged from the hospital less than a week later. Such a brave guy.

New edit of unpublished HDR shot of one of the surgeries at Beelitz. Sadly vandalized and with lots of graffiti.
History of the place: Beelitz-Heilstätten west of Berlin, is an amazing complex of 60 abandoned and derelict hospital buildings. The oldest buildings are from 1898 drawn by architect Heino Schmieden.
The complex became a war hospital during WW1. In 1916 Adolf Hitler was recovering here after being shot in the leg in the Battle of the Somme.
After WW2 the hospital was occupied by Soviet forces. They left in 1995.
