Can you spot the man working amongst the fallen branches? I couldn’t resist grabbing this shot on my phone yesterday whilst out walking with the children and dog.

At first I wasn't sure what to make of a pair of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus funereus) ripping off the bark in a copse of Black Wattles. Soon my curiosity was satisfied.

Strike two was also a miss but three through six were winners for the Snowy Egret. Not so much for the menhaden. On Horsepen Bayou.

Licking Up Those Bugs ......

The neoclassical Surgeons' Hall in Edinburgh, Scotland, is the headquarters of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSED). It houses the Surgeons' Hall Museum, and the library and archive of the RCSED. The present Surgeons' Hall was designed by William Henry Playfair and completed in 1832. It was extensively refurbished from 2013-5.

Départ du sentier "Les Coutures";

Hi everyone,

Believe it or not, this is my 2020 teeny tiny orange kitten who kept me company during lock down. My son, his favorite human, was out of town for a few days, so he made do with me, his back-up.

I had my eye surgery. I thought it went well in the beginning, but the doubling has come back. I have an appointment with my surgeon in a few days to see what the next steps are. It's frustrating, but I'm doing my best to stay positive. 😌

Not much of an update, but it's what I've got.

Hugs,

Athena

Tree surgeon felling a Poplar tree that stood in the local park

My original worries (see the previous image) were unjust to this clever bird. It's beyond my comprehension how he knew that among the dense crown of the acacia tree one of its branches concealed a tasty grub, which he extracted and then enjoyed on a nearby eucalypt.

Ok a little back story...my mother's parents were from a little town in Sicily called Floridia. My grandfather had 7 brothers and when my grandfather and grandmother came over to America a brother stayed in Italy. One year after my mother graduated from Juliard school of music (piano) she was sent to stay with her uncle in Sicily for a few months. My mother's aunt had surgery and my dad was a surgeon making a house call to my mother's aunt when my mother was visiting. Long story short they fell in love and because my mother was raised in America but with Italian immigrant parents she spoke both languages and therefore was able to communicate with my dad. They wrote letters back and forth and eventually got married and my dad moved to America but his mother (my nonna and his sister (my Zia Rita) stayed in Sicily. My dad had to learn English and get relicensed in America to practice medicine as a surgeon in New York City. He bought a summer home back in Siracusa and as a child I spent many summers with my dad and Nonna in Italy. Can't believe after all these years I'm finally going back and am excited to show Tim where I spent many a summers growing up! Wish I was visiting my dad, my Nonna and my Zia Rita but of course they have long passed…

Leaving tomorrow morning and will be back September 14...see you all then! :))

Beaumont, Texas: Historical Marker:

The first county building constructed at this site was a jailhouse completed in 1838, two years after the organization of Jefferson County. Located on land acquired from Nancy Tevis, a pioneer settler of the area, it also housed county offices and courts. When the commissioners court outgrew the facility, sessions were held in private homes. The first courthouse here was completed in 1854. Built by John A. Beaumont, it was a two-story square structure surrounded by a six-foot picket fence. Baptist and Methodist congregations conducted Sunday services in the building and during the Civil War it was leased to D. T. Inglehart, a Confederate surgeon, for use as a hospital. A second courthouse was constructed in 1893, twelve years after the incorporation of Beaumont. Designed by E. T. Heiner, it was a three-story red brick building with white trim. Following the area oil boom of the 1920s it proved inadequate to meet the needs of the growing population and was replaced by the present brick courthouse in 1931. Designed by Fred Stone and A. Babin, the fourteen-story building features art deco styling in the use of sculpted ornamentation and marble interior work.

A Little Cult Tune

Drug market, sub-market,

Sometimes I wonder why I ever got in.

Blood market, love market,

Sometimes I wonder why they need me at all.

Zydrate comes in a little glass vial.

A little glass vial?

And the little glass vial goes into the gun like a battery.

Hhh-hhh...

And the zydrate gun goes somewhere against your anatomy.

And when the gun goes off, it sparks

And you're ready for surgery!

The Doctor

Do not let the patients suffer.

Snow, ice, cold.....it's winter.

Sub zero temps, and with wind chill sub sub-zero.

All up and down the eastern seaboard. There's even snow in Florida!!!

Snow in Florida is just plain un-American.

But its vision is stunning. It's the proverbial wonderland.

For Christmas every year, my son gives me a new year calendar.

This year, he gave me one of Alaska.

I had a trip, planned bought and paid for to go to Alaska in August with some friends. A dream of mine.

But in July, as some of you may recall, Adam got the news that he had metastatic cancer. I cancelled my trip w/o blinking an eye.

After his surgery in August, when we got the (understatement of the year) good news, he was so apologetic.....I'm so sorry mom that you didn't get to go.

I sat him down and said Look at me and listen. There is nothing in Alaska that could ever give me the moment your surgeon looked me straight in the eye and said "It's not cancer."

There's nothing in the world that can give me that.

So instead, he brought Alaska to me.

And so has the weather. Now, I'm going to make some soup b/c baby, baby.....man, it's friggin cold outside.

I decided to paint the little bouquet my surgeon gave me, but I left off the "Fox Eye Institute" logo.

Just a family shot. After a visit from the tree surgeon this three year old "mixed and matched" his toys and clothes to make a very credible tree surgeon's outfit. Perhaps the plastic pliers and screwdriver in his workbelt weren't quite right and a great part of the morning was spent retracing our steps looking for tools that had dropped out. We made a game of the search and eventually got everything home safely. No trees or bushes were hurt in the shooting of this adventure. (Otterspool twin sisters hawthorns.)
