The time just before sunset was my favourite time at Lake Cawndilla. It's hard to describe the feeling but I'll give it a go.
As the sun starts dipping below the horizon, the landscape before me transforms into a silhouette of stillness. The dead trees, scattered across the foreshore and in the water of Lake Cawndilla, stand like ancient sentinels. Their skeletal branches, once full of life, now provide refuge to flocks of birds settling in for the night. In their thousands. The last rays of light paint the sky in hues of orange and pink and mauve, casting a warm glow over the lake’s surface.
Everything falls eerily silent. The wind has stilled, and the distant chatter of wildlife fades. In this moment, kilometers from civilization, I feel an overwhelming sense of calm. I become aware I am standing in knee-high grass and there could be new types of creatures heading to the water in the safety of night for a drink. This is their place, so I warily make my way back to the campsite. The isolation, the raw beauty of it all - it’s a feeling like no other, a peace that can only be found in the far west, Outback NSW.
Golden hues, a masterpiece in whole,
Painted skies, a tranquil, fiery scroll.
Nature’s brushstroke, vivid and untold,
A fleeting wonder, a treasure of gold.
The sun sinks low, its journey near done,
Casting its glow on everyone.
Shadows lengthen, they softly creep,
As twilight lulls the world to sleep.
Mountains bask in the amber light,
Fields are kissed by the glow of night.
Rivers shimmer, their currents ablaze,
Reflecting the heavens in a fiery haze.
The trees stand still, their silhouettes clear,
Bathed in warmth as the end draws near.
Birdsong fades, replaced by calm,
A hush that feels like nature's psalm.
Golden hour, brief and rare,
A sacred gift for those who care.
To pause, to watch, to truly see,
The magic of life, so wild and free.
And as the sun slips out of view,
Night emerges, cloaked in dew.
But the memory lingers, the moment stays,
A radiant echo of golden days.

Why do I love Lake Cawndilla? I’m so glad you asked.
Tucked away in the heart of Kinchega National Park in outback NSW, this lakeside campground is about as remote as it gets. No crowds, no noise—just pure, untouched wilderness. The closest hint of civilisation is Menindee, a tiny town 20 km down a dusty dirt road, home to about 1,000 souls. There is one notable exception, though—the local pub in Menindee is well worth a stop on the way to camp, their steak sanga alone is worth the trip!
But Lake Cawndilla... this place is a haven for waterbirds, a gathering point for countless species. I’m no bird expert, but I did recognise the pelicans. And let me tell you, they were everywhere—hundreds, maybe thousands—dotting the shoreline, soaring above, and drifting lazily across the lake. Emus and wallabies wandered through our campsite as casual visitors, as if we were simply neighbors. Armed with my trusty “noise” stick for long hikes, I was prepared for snakes, though I’m happy to report they kept their distance.
What captivates me most about Cawndilla is its rhythm, the constant dance between wet and dry that breathes life into this incredible wetland. Last year, after the rains, the lake was a magnet for all kinds of waterbirds. This year, with the waters lower, the flood plains exploded in a riot of color, covered with wildflowers.
As the sun sets, the magic really begins. The lake reflects every shade of sunset, glowing in a palette of fiery reds and deep purples. The air fills with the cries of waterbirds, and the eerie silhouettes of drowned trees—hundreds of them, maybe more—create an almost mystical scene.
Later, we settle by the campfire, a glass of red wine in hand, beneath a sky thick with stars. The sounds of the bush are our soundtrack, an untamed symphony that plays long into the night.
Lake Cawndilla isn’t just a place—it’s an experience. And every time I leave, I can’t wait to return.
While Krabi itself has been a tourism hotspot since the 1980s, Koh Poda's journey as a prime destination began later. Originally, the island was primarily visited by local fishermen and a select group of intrepid travelers searching for unspoiled nature. It wasn't until the early 2000s that Koh Poda started to gain prominence amongst international tourists, drawing attention for its picturesque setting which is perfect for a day trip or a brief sojourn away from the mainland.
The growth of tourism in Koh Poda coincided with Thailand’s larger tourism development plan. The nation's focus on promoting its natural assets to the international community helped islands like Koh Poda rise in prominence. As infrastructure improved and travel agencies began to include the island in their itineraries, Koh Poda saw a steady increase in visitors eager to experience its unexaggerated beauty.

Sunset flame in the sky blazed
And reaching the height of the epogee,
With her picturesque brush she touched,
A great mystery of unusual beauty!
And it seems to me again on the horizon,
A flickering lamp shade,
To whom I turn with prayer,
Thanks for your day!
Note: Formerly Mt. Fuji Sunset Magic. Updated to align with the "Descent From The Clouds" series of 2 photos on Mount Fuji---Japan's sacred volcano. From these celestial heights to snow-veiled slopes, and finally into the misted descent. With each image, Fuji stands not just as a peak, but as a presence---timeless, majestic, and deeply felt.
Description While in Japan, my companion and I set out from Tokyo---first by bullet train, then by cable car---chasing the promise of Fuji at sunset. At the viewing station, the mountain rose through a sea of drifting cloud, its summit kissed by golden light. The classic cone shape, born of volcanic layering, stood radiant and aloof. This was the first breath of the journey---where sky and mountain meet, and the descent begins.

The slopes naturally lead the eye towards the tower, while the sky and trees dissolve into warm and cool tones. A fleeting balance between calmness and tension, captured in light.

After days of staring at screens and chasing deadlines, I needed a reset. So, I grabbed my camera and made my way to the rocky beach, hoping the sunset would offer something worth capturing. As I set up my shot, the sky was already shifting—warm tones spilling over the water, the pier stretching out like a quiet path into the evening. The textured rocks in the foreground added depth, framing the scene just right. More than just a photo, this was a moment to breathe—to slow down and take in something real before heading back to the noise of work.
