There are a few moments right after sunrise when the Cross Timbers glows like it’s been dipped in honey. The sun creeps low over the blackjack and post oaks, painting the wood's edge in molten amber. The air smells of cedar and fallen leaves, and the wind carries the waking songs of birds. I can hear deer crunching fallen acorns.
Shadows stretch long across the prairie grasses, and for a few breaths, time slows, almost stops. This is a magic time and place—where the plains meet the woods, and the sky feels close enough to touch. No lens filters needed. This is the real deal: sun-kissed leaves, whitetail deer, and dark shadows as a backdrop, and that deep, peaceful quiet before sunlight chases the shadows away.
If you’ve never pursued golden hour here, put it on your list. Bring a friend, a dog, or just yourself. The Cross Timbers don’t ask for much—just open eyes and a little respect for the natural world.

A day or two before I took this picture, there were very strong winds that drew along their path some beautful lines on the snow like you see in the foreground. On the left of the tree is the Ottawa River. On the right is Ottawa and on the other side is Gatineau, Québec.
Un jour ou deux avant que je prenne cette photo, les vents forts qui soufflaient sur la région ont dessiné sur leur passage de belles lignes sur la neige comme on en voit au premier plan. À gauche de l'arbre, on voit la rivière Outaouais. Du côté sud de la rive (à droite) se situe Ottawa, et du côté nord, Gatineau, Québec.

The gorgeous colors in the sky were sticking around. I stepped to my right and re-planted the tripod. While recomposing the shot, I wondered how many times this giant sculpture had been photographed while pressing the shutter button. Then, I thought to myself that the first thing to find out was when this serpent was erected. To achieve this shot, I stacked 1/20 1/13, 0.4 and 0.6 sec at f/4 exposure shots.

I was looking through the living room window when I saw the gorgeous colours of the sky reflected in the puddles created by melting snow. Dinner was ready but I has to take a few moments to run out and capture this on "film".

Joyeux vendredi qui clôture la semaine et un fabuleux week-end !
Out on the pedalo this week-end, at sunrise. It was calm and peaceful in and out of the water. Saw three herons but they were too far to get decent pictures. It was still nice to see them and observe them. The reflections on the lake were perfect as long as I took pictures as we moved because when we stopped, the ripples created ripples (which they do best) transforming the perfect reflections. ♦
Sortie en pédalo sur le lac ce week-end, au lever du soleil. Tout était calme et paisible sur l'eau et aux alentours. J'ai vu trois hérons, mais ils étaient trop loin pour que les photos les mettent bien en vue. J'étais tout de même très contente de les voir et de les observer. Les reflets sur le lac étaient parfaits pourvu que je prenne mes photos en pédalant. Dès que nous arrêtions, les ondulations transformaient les reflets parfaits.

The theme for week 9 of the 52 weeks of pix in 2013 is Looking Down
I had a few ideas for the theme but for various reasons, they did not materialized. So I decided to go on a road where I could look down at the Ottawa river to take pictures at sun down on the one day when it looked like I would get some nice clouds and sunset colours, and I did!

J'avais quelques idées mais pour diverses raisons, elles ne se sont pas matérialisées. J'ai donc décidé d'aller sur une route d'où je pouvais regarder la rivière des Outaouais plus bas et prendre des photos au coucher du soleil le seul jour de la semaine où il semblait que je pouvais avoir quelques beaux nuages et couleurs du soleil couchant, et je les ai eues tous les deux!

It was freezing cold (-25 Celsius or so) the morning I got out of my warm bed after a long debate with myself whether it was worth it to go catch a sunrise over the La Lièvre River! A couple that was driving by stopped to tell me how it was worth getting out to admire this beautiful sunrise. It made me feel good. As always, once I was out there, I felt good to have gotten up for such beauty.

Il faisait un froid de canard (-25 degrés Celsius) le matin où je suis sortie de mon lit douillet après un long débat avec moi-même, me demandant si cela valai la peine d'aller prendre des photos du lever de soleil sur la rivière La Lièvre! Un couple qui passait par là en voiture s’est arrêté pour me dire combien cela valait la peine de sortir à cette heure-là pour admirer ce beau lever de soleil. Cela m’a fait plaisir de recevoir leurs encouragements. Comme toujours, une fois sur les lieux, j'étais heureuse de m'être levée pour admirer cette belle scène.

Boathouse of the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club
The Ottawa New Edinburgh Club (ONEC) is one of the oldest boating clubs in Canada with a historic boathouse that is one of only four in Canada. Its history is interwoven with that of the City of Ottawa itself and continues to play a role in the social and athletic development of our community. It has long been a meeting place for Ottawa's sportspeople.
The boathouse was designed by architect C.P.Meredith in the Queen Anne recreational style.

Morning arrived amidst crisp dry air. To my delight, the clouds that had rolled in overnight and formed into huge clumps stuck around in the east. The sky having broken out of blue hour was now freshly brushed in strokes of yellow, orange and red. While watching light do its magic, I stood there trying to remember this solitude as long as I could. To achieve this shot, I stacked 1/6, 1/15, and 1/20 sec at f/4 (to keep the saturation in the sky) and 5 sec at f/11 (to maintain the details in the dark) exposure shots.

This picture was taken in the Port of San Juan, in Puerto Rico, at the end of our one week Caribbean cruise on the Brilliance of the Sea, a Royal Caribbean ship.
Every day, we got up early to watch the sunrise and it was always spectacular. I offer this picture to my fellow Canadians in Ontario and Québec where we are having a snow storm today. If you stare at it long enough, you will forget what is going on outside your window.
The theme for week 12 in the Challenge 2013 group is Within a 15 minute walk from your house". Since my "home" was a ship for a week, this is my submission for the week. It was about a 4 minutes walk to the deck!!!

Chaque jour, nous nous levions tôt pour admirer le lever du soleil et chaque jour, nous avons été récompensé par un lever de soleil spectaculaire. J'offre cette image à mes amis canadiens en Ontario et au Québec, où frappe une tempête de neige aujourd'hui. Si vous regardez cette photo assez longtemps, vous oublierez ce qui se passe à l'extérieur.
Every face has a best side, right? I wanted to shoot the serpent’s face with its tongue sticking out from the front to capture a more dramatic look. However, because of the direction where I was facing the sculpture, I could not include the sun in the frame. Before losing the glow in the sky completely, already fading fast, I decided to ditch the sun. And I liked how it came out. To achieve this shot, I stacked 1/40, 1/25, 1/10 and 1/4 sec at f/4 exposure shots.
All is quiet on the water as the sun goes down.

Sunset kisses the peaks of Coffee Pot Rock as clouds dance across the Sedona sky. The early morning wake-up call for Larry Lindahl's photo lesson was worth every second to witness this light. Capturing the dramatic contrast between earth and sky created magic I'll never forget.
