Street photography from Barnsley, England.

Previously unpublished shot captured candidly on my short walk back to the hotel from Barnsley town centre in November 2018. It had been a very wet day on my final day of shooting in Barnsley for a client so a spontaneous smile was very welcome. Enjoy!

I let Chris dress me today, but I had to edit a tad before walking out the door. It's been a REALLY long time since I've worn an outfit this bright & colorful. Need to do this more often. It sure made up for how exhausted I felt.

Me: So you guys went to church on your honeymoon?

Mom: We went to church every Sunday in those days. It was a mortal sin not to.

Me: When did you stop going?

Mom: In my thirties. Actually 32.

Me: So that would've been in 1974?

Mom: Actually 1973. The reason I remember it because Daddy was away, I was just getting over being sick, you were a baby—maybe two years old, a year and a half. And I really didn't feel like going to church, but I got a babysitter, and went.

Me: What church was this?

Mom: The Sacred Heart Church in Merrick. Anyway, I had a bad cough—and don't forget nobody realized back then I had asthma. I didn't want to sit down in the church because if I was in the middle of a coughing spell I wanted to get up and leave easily. There were other people standing in the back of the church, so I went and stood with them. When the priest went to give his sermon, he said wouldn't give it unless everyone who was standing sat down. I could only sit down in the front—all the seats in the back were taken, and if you wanted seats elsewhere you had to climb over people. I started to cough—one of those coughs that once you start you can't stop. And there were a few other people who weren't sitting down. The priest started basically really yelling, basically saying that if we couldn't sit in church then God didn't want us there, and that we might as well not come. And this was not my idea of God and religion because...I went to church even though I was just getting over being sick, leaving three sick kids at home, and I went to church because I wanted to go to church, and to go through all that have a priest tell me I should have not come was just...I guess in fairness there were a lot of things in organized religion that I was beginning to disagree with. So I left. And never went back.

Me: I can remember one or two times going to church with you. Maybe for the Christmas holiday?

Mom: You would've had to have been very small, because I never went to church after that. You would've been around two or three years old. On the other hand, Tommy had his communion when he was seven, which would've been 1974. So it had to be after that.

A few things:

1) I don't know what's up with the random bobby pin on Chuck's head. I didn't put it there, and it's not attached to her hairbow. Hm.

2) Why my mom has that bizarre 1990's "celestial" candleholder? No idea.

3) Yep, it's February, and we've still got candy canes laying around.

4) My mom loves 3 things: cross stitching, Americana crap, and snowmen. All three are combined in the strange "snowman in a sweater" mini-pillow she's got in the upper corner. Really, why would a snowman wear a sweater? Homeboy would melt. And are snowmen patriotic? Do they even have a country?

...she really is a darling...with the sweetest expression!

Goose: What the. . . what is that pink-haired girl doing in MY spot??? That's for ME when I get to come out of this dumb box! *sob*

Kirby: Pipe down, blondie.

Goose: It's so unfair! Unfaaaaaiiir!

Tons of people come to the Water Wall every day and night to take photos. There was a good sized crowd out today, lots of kids playing soccer. There was also a really interesting Hoochie Photo Session in progress when I arrived...never would it occur to me to get all hookered up to go take photos in front of the Water Wall. Maybe it's a local thing!

This is the exact outfit I wore to the ultra glam Alt opening social. I wore it in church today for my talk. Thought it'd be great to stand out like a sore thumb. I love this dress.

I was the last one in my office to have their picture taken. Made sure the person before me was about my height so I would not have to mess with the tripod. I focused then got in front of the camera and hit the shutter. Close enough.
