Orchard Beach, known as "the Riviera of the Bronx," is a small. sandy oasis set alongside the quiet waterside experience within a backdrop of vast picnic lawns, sports courts and playgrounds, and surrounding forest, meadow and salt marsh.
There's a lot to do at Orchard Beach besides sunbathe, swim, and build sand castles. Twenty-six hard-surface sports courts offer opportunities for basketball, tennis, handball and volleyball. There are also two playgrounds - Pelican Playground at Section5 offer spray showers; Orchard Beach Playground ay Section 13 is on the sand. In-season, beach concessions sell food and drink, as well as beach souvenirs, toys, and necessities. Summer programming includes occasional contrast the main pavilion stage (Section 9) and Urban Park Ranger talks and walks start from the Orchard Beach Nature Center at Section 2. Nearby nature trails traverse rocky coastline, salt marsh and woodlands on Hunter and Twin Islands off the northernmost end of the promenade. Favorite fishing spots can be found along The Lagoon where you can also launch your kayak or canoe.
NYC Parks & Recreation maintains 14 miles of beaches, all of which are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. During beach season, lifeguards are on duty daily, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections. Closed sections are marked with signs and/or red flags.

We have just finished our third week of camp. The Willows campers have been kept very busy these past three weeks. The days have been flying by way too quickly. It was very exciting to have all our Willows family members join us for an outstanding visiting day. The children were extremely excited to share their activities with their parents, while the parents had fun pretending to be campers. We hope you had as much fun as we did and lunch together was terrific.
The children enjoyed this weeks theme of “I Spy”. They had fun decorating binoculars in Camper Creations. In Ceramics, each child enjoyed making their favorite food out of clay with the help of their parents. Their ceramic projects will be sent home shortly. To end our wonderful week, The Willows campers joined the rest of camp at Waterworld. The children drove
water boats and joined in other great water activities. A terrific time was had by all!

Week 2 beginning July 1, 2013 and ending July 5, 2013 was yet another great week at WGDC.
The second week of camp saw a some rain and hot temperatures but this did not stop the campers from having a great time! When it was not raining, campers stayed cool by swimming in the many pools we have on campus! WGDC welcomed the 'Science Explorers' for a fun and interesting assembly. To celebrate the 4th of July, the whole camp participated in the "All Camp Cookout". Camp was closed on the 4th of July to commemorate the holiday. Camp resumed on Friday with more summer fun activities such as rowing, arts and crafts, and so much more!

“It takes an Illage” is a photographic essay following the lives of 18 queer twenty-somethings and the adult summer camp they’ve created. Even in Portland, being queer can be an isolating experience. Constantly being defined by difference can threaten one’s sense of belonging. So I was intrigued by this group who, through their own creativity have manifested a community of acceptance and appreciation for each and every singly oddity. Gender, rules, clothes, who needs ‘em? Illage camp happens every August and it is a week-long extravaganza of glitter parades, capture the flag and even marrying the city of Portland. For the project, not only do I want to tell the story of camp, but I’m looking forward to delving deeper into the diverse lives of its counselors. These images were made during a pre-camp retreat where focused conversations of camp logistics were had naked on floaties. It was the perfect visual for the delightful way that illagers shatter expectations and invite those around them to do the same. I was continually inspired by their openness to each other and to myself as a photographer. They enveloped me with their warmth immediately and without hesitation. Director Alex Simon put it best, “you can’t hide from the magic of camp.”
