.
A powerful documentary exposé on BT farming in India, `Bi·er Seeds' is the third of Micha Peled's Globalasia·on.
Trilogy. The film reveals the Monsanto's killer stranglehold over our agrarian society, the deadly impact of gene·cally.
modified co·on on India's farmers, their huge financial stress, massive crop failure and spate of unabated suicides..
.
Every year, AISA observes 23-31 March as Shadat Saptah. During this week, we commemorate the heroic lives and martyrdoms of.
those like Bhagat Singh and his comrades who have become a symbol of revolution. We remember the incandescent lives of those.
like the revolutionary poet Paash martyred on 23 March, 1988 and Chandrashekhar Prasad, former JNUSU president-martyred in.
Siwan on 31 March, 1997- who lived among the struggling people and were committed to this struggle unto the last. In this era of.
massive, institutionalized and legalized corruption and corporate loot of resources, at a time when the powers-that-be are washing their.
hands off from their responsibility to defend livelihoods and provide for education and healthcare, mortgaging country's sovereignty.
under imperialist dictates and assaulting all democratic rights, it becomes all the more necessary to reassert the life and legacy of our.
martyrs, the causes they lived and died for..
.
Bhagat Singh had warned that the Indian ruling class would be the `bhure angrez' (brown British) replacing the `gore angrez'.
(white British). His words ring true - now more than ever before - when India's ruling class has been devastating India's people.
by policies that facilitate corporate and imperialist plunder..
.
The systematic spread of corporate control over our agrarian economy over last two decades and latest offensive of FDI in.
retail sector are two most glaring instances of neo-liberal policy package that have hit the poorest strata of our society in.
a most direct manner..
.
Agribusiness corporations, which control seeds and pesticides, introduce genetically modified crops such as Bt Cotton, have driven.
farmers into a trap of debt and despair. The result is what amounts to a genocide of primary producers: 2.5 lakh farmer suicides in the.
past 16 years, according to Government records..
.
If corporate control in agriculture was bad enough as it is, now the government seeks to deepen it by introducing FDI in multi-brand.
retail. According to the Government propaganda, corporate retail fuelled by FDI will result in lower prices by "eliminating middlemen.".
We are being promised that FDI in retail will not threaten small retailers, who will "coexist" with Walmart. We are being told that in.
fact FDI in retail will actually generate more employment! The government also claims that corporate retail will benefit farmers and.
producers by ensuring a "remunerative price". And finally, corporate retailers will remain restricted only to some areas and some sectors..
.
Not ONE of these claims is justified by the available data and international experience anywhere in the world. Data from.
developing countries often shows that prices in supermarkets are most of the times higher than the existing retailers..
.
The claim of no effect on small retailers is also completely unsubstantiated. In Brazil, the share of street markets in for fruits and.
vegetables declined by 27.8% between 1987 and 1996 with the introduction of FDI in retail. In Argentina, the number of small stores.
dropped by 64,198 between 1984 and 1993 - 30% of the shops in the country. In India, the retail sector is also the refuge of around 4.
crore people, those unable to find employment elsewhere, allowing them a chance to eke out a living by running small shops, pushing.
handcarts or selling vegetables on the street. So we should also ask the Government: how many jobs and means of survival will it.
jeopardize in India through FDI in retail?.
.
Most purchase for corporate retailers occurs through contract farming which small and marginal farmers are unable to access..
Additionally, conditions for agricultural workers in supermarket suppliers is very bad, because of the intense pressure placed.
on farmers to reduce prices, guarantee arbitrary `quality standards', handle last minute changes in contracts and absorb discounts,.
promotions, etc. passed on to them..
.
It is well known that an enquiry is underway in the US into allegations of bribery by Walmart, the corporate retail giant, in.
several countries including Mexico, India, China and Brazil. There are indications that Walmart and its subsidiaries paid bribes.
in order to expand its network of stores in those countries. Further, the Enforcement Directorate in India is probing an allegation that.
Walmart secretly and illegally invested 100 million dollars in its wholesale partner Bharti Enterprises, way back in 2010 when foreign.
players were barred from entry into India's retail business. At the same time, Walmart had disclosed that it spent Rs 125 crore since.
2008 on lobbying US senators on various issues, including "enhanced market access for investment in India." How exactly was the.
money spent on `lobbying' for entry into India? Who are the alleged recipients of bribes by Walmart in India, according to the ongoing.
enquiry? These unanswered questions indicate that the murky process by which the FDI in retail policy has been adopted..
.
Today, as we remember the legacy of Bhagat Singh-Sukhdev-Rajguru, Paash and Com. Chandrashekhar, let us reiterate our commitment.
to oppose this entire gamut of anti-people policies being shoved down our throats. Tonight (29 March 2013), AISA is Screening Two.
Films on assaults of corporate globalisation on people's lives, livelihood and sovereignty: `Store Wars - When Wal Mart Comes to.
Town' and `Bitter Seeds'. Store Wars is a film about how Walmart is being opposed by people in Ashland in the US and Bitter Seeds.
is an expose of BT farming in India and the impact of globalization on Indian agriculture. AISA appeals to the student community to.
participate in large numbers in the film screening tonight at Mahi Mandavi Mess from 9.30 pm onwards.

The Supreme Court refused to entertain the bail plea of sacked Uttarakhand minorities panel chief Sukhdev Singh Namdhari, accused in a 2012 shootout here that killed liquor baron Ponty Chadha and his brother Hardeep, saying charges against him were "grave".
“We are not interested in entertaining the petition. The charges against you are grave,” a vacation bench comprising Justices PC Ghose and Amitava Roy said.
The apex court took strong note of the fact that Namdhari earlier secured interim bail on health grounds from the trial court during the pendency of his regular bail plea in the Delhi High Court.
"It is strange. The trial court grants you interim bail when the bail petition is pending in the High Court," it said.
Namdhari, in his plea before the apex court, said he was not keeping well and hence be enlarged on bail during the pendency of trial.
Ponty and Hardeep, who were allegedly involved in a property dispute, were killed in a shootout at a Chhattarpur farmhouse here on November 17, 2012. Subsequently, Namdhari was arrested on November 23, 2012. Later, the remaining accused were apprehended.

Usko phansi de do last para On May 1, 1886, US workers had declared a nation-wide strike demanding that the 8-hour workday be legalised. More than 3 lakh workers participated in the strike. In Chicago, the police fired on protesting workers, killing 6 and wounding hundreds. On May 4, thousands of workers gathered in Haymarket Square to protest against the police brutality. But the police fired again, killing innumerable workers. In an instance of blatant witch-hunting, the police then arrested 8 workers leaders on trumped up murder charges. With no shred of evidence, all 8 were convicted as guilty, and four were executed. Working class struggles have always been branded as anti-national by the State, and subjected to brutal repression. The bulk of the victims of the draconian TADA were workers and trade-unionists; even today, TADA may have disappeared from the statutes, but it continues to be used against the struggles of agrarian poor. Draconian laws like ESMA and NSA are used to crush working class assertions, the historic right of the workers to strike is now being illegalised. Meanwhile, the industrialists who ordered the murder of working class leader Shankar Guha Niyogi escape punishment. On May Day, as we commemorate the historic May 1 strike for which the Haymarket Martyrs were hanged, we also salute the memory of the martyrs and heroes of our working class movement Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, the hundreds of nameless workers and students killed in the protests against the British colonial trial of the INA soldiers, as well as working class leaders like Niyogi, Datta Samant, Safdar and Mahendra Singh. The fate of workers being evicted from their homes in the cities of Cyberabad and Mumbai; the suicides of farmers in Andhra Pradesh and Punjab, the starvation of agrarian workers due to unemployment all these tell the tale of the fresh assault on the working class in times of globalisation. Mills are shut down to make way for malls, and workers slums are declared to be blot on the beauty of the very cities their own labour has created. In the era of Globalisation, the assault on the working class has intensified internationally; but at the same time, it is the working class which has formed the core of remarkable mass protests against imperialist economic policies and aggression. .
In India, since the decade of nineties, successive Governments launched their liberalisation offensive on the working class. The most naked expression of this assault was by the BJP-led NDA. The BJP-NDA instituted a Disinvestment Ministry which presided over the privatization of public sector units like VSNL, Balco, Maruti and IPCL. Rushing to obey the diktats of the imperialist funding agencies, the BJP-NDA speeded up the process of selling out Indias assets, cutting back on public spending on social sectors, and concessions to big corporates and MNCs. The resulting starvation, farmers suicides and unemployment finally burst the India Shining balloon that the BJP-NDA had tried to present to the people as an election gift. .
However, even the UPA, which came to power promising a shift in such anti-people policies, has gone ahead on the same path. All the BJP-NDAs pet projects -whether it be the disinvestments of PSUs, including the Oil sector PSUs, Airlines, and BHEL, the proposal to allow 74 per cent FDI in Indian private banks, (announced by the NDA), the hike in FDI cap in telecom to 74 per cent, the proposal to permit FDI in the retail sector and further privatise the insurance sector, privatisation of the power sector, the privatisation of the Delhi and Mumbai airports (a step initiated by the NDA), the privatisation of the pension funds of Government employees, -the UPA is all set to continue with them all. .

. AISA Shahadat Saptah 23-31 March 2004 .
From Bhagat Singh to Comrade Chandrahekhar. The Legacy L/vee On.... .
On 31 March, 1997, Comrade Chandrashekhar, who had twice been President ofJNUSU, was shot dead while addressing a street comer meeting in Siwan, Bihar. Chandu, as he was popularly known, had returned to his hometown. Siwan, as a full-time activist of the CPI(ML), to work to organise movements of the rural poor. He was killed by goons on the ordeTS of notorious mafia don and RID MP Mohd. Shahabuddin. .
Every year, AISA organises a Shalladat Saptah all over lhe country in sainte lo the legacy of commitment and sacrifice of youth dedicated to social change, from Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru (23 march 193 1) to revol.utionarypoet Avtar Singh Paash (23 March 1988) to Chandrashekhar (31 March 1997). .
This year, as we observe the Shahadat. Sapta.h, we also salute tbe memory ofth.ose young people of out times. who have sacrificed tJ1ei r li\'CS in order to speak out against injustice. Along with Chandu. we also salute Navccn Babu. a student of JNU who also bcc<1mc a rcYolutionary activist, and was killed in an encounter by Andhra Police. We remember Satycndra Dubey, who was killed for exposing corruption in the PM's pet Highway Project. We salute Manju, the young woman activist ofCPI(ML) from Jcllanabad, whose assertion the feudal, barbaric Ranveer Sena sought to silence with bullets. Manju's memorial, built in her village by the local poor people, has been vandalisM several times by her killers, who roam scot-free. We honour Sarita and Mahesh who were killed in Gaya. And we honour t11e memory of the American Rachel Come and British Thomas Hundall who were brutally killed by the Israeli army in March last year, for defying their own imperialist governments and resisting the demolition ofPalestinian homes. .
This year, during the Shahadat Saptah, we will interact with people's movements, through film screenings, street plays, talks and processions. On 22 March, we will launch the Shahadat Saptah with the screening of Sanjay Kak's documentary on the Narmada movemen~ Words on Water, followed by a Public Meeting addressed by Sanjay Kak, NBA activist Chittaroopa PaUt and writer Arundhatl Roy. This year, the annual Chandrashekhar Memorial Lecture will be delivered by noted economist and social activist Jean Dreze, on 26 March. .
Sbahabuddin has not even been chargesheeted for Chandrashekhar's murder. While he continues to receive RID patronage, he is also being wooed and protected by the NDA. In the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, Shahabuddin will once again be a candid<llc. His terror continues unabated -although be is currently in jail for the kidnapping and murder ofanother CPI(ML) activist, he is in Hospital instead, from where he moves freely We have launched a s.JGNATIJRR CAMPAIGN appealing to the President or India and the CEC to intervene to check his terror during the elections. In 1997, JNU students faced police repression to lead a rcnu1rkablc movement to protest their comrade's murder. This year, once again, we appeal to JNU students to keep alive the struggle against Chandrasbekhar 's killer by participati ng widely in the signature campaign. .
Through the Shahadat Saptah, letus salute the memoryof the martyrs and renew our commitmentto the struggles for which they gave up their fives. Mnm~ '():)~. Prcs:icleot AT~.A JNl l JntC'<~hRr AhmAd Gf'nrrnl Slv-rt'Hirv _ATSA. fNl l .

“A Green Economy is about natural capital and the TEEB report is all about making people recognize the value of natural capital and its role in alleviating poverty, especially in places like the Heart of Borneo, a place so rich in eco-system services.”
“Many eco-system services are invisible, but they represent 10%-15% of global GDP and more importantly they represent between 50-90% of the value of poor people’s livelihoods. Thus when your countries develop their economies you cannot remove nature from them because their poorest citizens are so dependent on it.”
Mr Sukhdev noted that financing a green economy in places like the Heart of Borneo was not the major problem.
“We already subsidize the fossil fuel driven ‘brown economy’ to the tune of one trillion US dollar every year without any concern being raised – so diverting some of the money to support a new green and sustainable economy should not be a problem. I know which economy I would rather be subsidizing through my tax dollar,”’ he said.
Moreover, there are many new forms of funds being developed internationally to finance a green economy. The Heart of Borneo and its representative governments are well placed to access some of these funds.
