Friends, We congratulate the student community for joiruog the JNUSU's H wnan Chain on the occasion of the 75r.h Martyrdom .
Day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. The grand vision of these revolutionaries who had very happily faced the gallows .
at a very young age fighting against British Imperialism, gives inspiration to the youth of this country to follow their path and .
struggle for an egalitarian society. However, even after more than SO years of independence this vision of Bhagat Stngh and his .
fellow comrades has remained unfulfilled. The British imperialism has been replaced by the US imperialism, which is spreading its claws throughout the world today in many forms, thus threatening the sovereignty of countries. The illegal .
occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq by the US forces, which has now put Iran as their next target has crippled these countries, both politically and economically. We also find that the successive governments in India are working ovenime to become the junior partners of US, v..·hether it is the NDA or UPA. The NDA regime led by the RSS-BJP had left no stone untumed to .
dance to the tunes of us diktats wherein it had shown unprecedented enthusiasm to join the us· 'war on terrorism' by .
suggest~ng the 'India-Israel-US troika' and had also shown inclination to send troops to Iraq, which was only resisted due to .
the sustained opposition by the Left and progressive forces of our country. The RSS led Sangh Giroh, which claims to be the .
only 'true salt' of this country, iofact has only fomented conununal fascism, thereby spreading xenophobia among the .
minorities. The self-styled 'patriotic leaders' of the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha were busy collaborating with the British .
.
whereby their leaders like Savarkar signed mercy petitions, thus trying to sabotage our glorious freedom struggle. .
The Sangh Giroh's venomous politics is clearly visible in most of the communal violence happerung .
in the country, whether it be the destruction of the Babri Masjid and the subsequent riots across the country in 1992-93, the .
riots in Mau. in UP. But the biggest communal attack by them came in the form of the State sponsored genocide against.
.
attacks on the Christian institutions in Dangs, the killing of Graham Staines and his two sons in Orissa, as well as the recent .
muslims in Gujarat in 2002 by the Narendra Modi government, where many were killed, maimed, gang-raped and rendered .
date, the riot affected people in Gujarat have not been properly rehabilitated by the State government. The Sangh Giioh has dectth for skinning a dead cow. The ABVP and JPF, which are the student wings of the RSS-BJP have not been any different homeless. There were inhuman cases of the wombs of women being tom open and the foetus being thrown into the fire. Till .
also indulged in caste atrocities with the most notable incident being in Jhajjar in Haryana, where Dalit youths were done to .
from their parent panies. This campus has been witness to the culture of violence and hatred of both these groups. The most .
abusive slogans were rendered which were targetted at the faculty members belonging to the minority community. TheJPF,explicit case was the provocative march taken out by the ABVP in the aftermath of the Godhra incident in 2002, whereby .
which is the breakaway faction of the ABVP has come to symbolize the gangwar culture in the campus, whereby students .
were being beaten up in their rooms and sexual violence was targetted at the girl students. While the RSS and its associates have indulged in such venomous politics, we also find that .
the so-called torch-bearers of our freedom struggle, the Congress also has stayed true to its class character. The Congress since .
1990-91 has introduced the pro-US nee-liberal economic policies which has crippled the economic sovereignty of our country .
and has also led to the phenomena of 'jobless growth'. It has forced hundreds of farmers to commit suicides in States like Andhr-a Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Even a prosperous State like Punjab has faced this scenario. We have also seen that .
the economic assets are being sold for a song under the garb of privatization and disinvestment. The attempted sale of BHEL .
and recent case of the proposed privatization of the Delhi and Mumbai airports are examples in this regard. It was only due to sustained pressure of the Left parties that the government was forced to rollback these decisions. The conunon mao has also .
faced increased hardships due to hikes in petroleum prices every now and then. It seems that the Congress(!) has withdrawn .
its slogan of the 'Aam Aadmi'!l Even in the education sector, the government is not living upto its promise of spending 6% of the GDP. There have been rampant attempts to commercialize the education sector through the Private Universities bill and there has also been a flood of self-financing institutions, thus making education a commodity. The Indo-US nuclear deal .
signed in July 2005, which was again reaffirmed during the visit of George Bush in the beginning of this month is a clear sign .
of the Manmohan Singh led UPA government trying to kowtow to the US interests, which is also a case of the UPA deviating .
from the Common Minimum Programme and shedding the goal of an independent foreign policy. It is in th.i.s context that the .
legacy of Bhagiit Singh has to be remembered by the people of this country, especially the youth. Infact, Bhagat Singh had always believed that it was in the hands of the youth of India that the interests of the country were safe and only they could .
showing it:s true character, did not take any position onsuch an important day of the martyrdom of the young revolutionariesstrengthen its sovereignty. The stooges of the Congress in the campus and the. right-wing reactionary NSUI, once again .
It is highly unfortunate that even the 'ultras', chose to keep away from the programme which was called to strengthen the student unity in the campus against the imperialist and fascist forces. We.
which was also visible during the Bush's visit. .
appeal all the students to expose such communal, casteist, and opportunistic forces and rally behind the SFI in carrying .
.
forward the vision of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev to ensure that a classless egalitarian society is established. .

Mohali, August 16 - Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal called upon the people of the state to dedicate themselves to build a strong and prosperous Punjab.
Addressing the gathering after unfurling the Tricolor at the state-level Independence Day function held at Government College, here, Badal said some anti-social elements had been conspiring against the state’s peace, communal harmony and progress.
“The people of Punjab know very well how to deal with such elements and save the state from their nefarious designs,” said Badal.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister also honoured 32 eminent personalities from different walks of life with state-level awards and 17 officials from the state Police Department with the Chief Minister’s Medal for meritorious services. Three police personnel were awarded with the Chief Minister’s Rakshak Padak and seven others were honoured with Community Policing Sewa Medal for distinguished services in the Police Department.
Remembering the sacrifices of brave Punjabi patriots and great warriors, including Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Lala Lajpat Rai, Shaheed Udham Singh and Kartar Singh Sarabha, Badal said the state government was spending a lot to construct monuments so that the future generations would come to know about their sacrifices for the country.
Speaking about the importance of education and health sectors for the country’s development, Badal said due to their efforts, the state had now 13 more new universities and 30 colleges for higher education. “Similarly, new initiatives have been undertaken in the health sector by providing free treatment to cancer patients. Recently, it was also decided to provide free treatment to persons suffering from Hepatitis-C in government hospitals,” said Badal.
Earlier, the Chief Minister took a salute during the march past by the contingents of the Punjab Police Recruits Training Centre (PRTC) Jahan Khellan, Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, Punjab Armed Police (PAP), Jalandhar, NCC Bharat Scouts and Guides led by the parade Commander Olympian and Arjuna Awardee DSP Punjab Police Rajpal Singh.

The famed London night: "There was a time, well over a century ago now, when it was considered one the finest Victorian inventions." Gas lighting opened up the night--rendering the darkness visible, and introducing new spaces of lawlessness and depravity. But have CCTV cameras and British Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) neutralized the night? Writer SUKHDEV SANDHU and composer ANDREW INGKAVET presented a visual and sonic journey through an unfamiliar nocturnal London, encountering urban fox hunters, exorcists, cleaning crews, mini-cab drivers, sleep technicians and the Nuns of Tyburn, as they pray for the souls of Londoners.
SANDHU is a professor of English Literature at New York University, Chief Film Critic of the "Daily Telegraph," and author of "London Calling: How Black and Asian Writers Imagined a City." INGKAVET is a composer, filmmaker and designer. He began scoring films while working in Hong Kong as one of MTV-Asia’s first VJs.

It is not sttrprising that the p'olitical genesis ofBhagat Singh began witha firm rejection ofGandhi's Ipolitics of .
'non-violence'. Bhagat Singh, along with Chandrashekhar Azad, Sukhdev, Jatin Das andYashpal had.
actively participated in the non-cooperation movement led by Gandhi. Atthe height ofthe movement, when the.
days ofBritish rule seerned numbered, the Chauri Chaura incident happened. The police here viciously beat up the.
movement volunteers, and opened fire on an u.narmed crowd that had come to protest at the police station. In a.
spontaneous outburst ofmass anger, the peasants set fire to the police station, killing 22 policemen. Gandhi.
cond~mned this peasant militancy and called offthe movement. Bhagat Singh and his comrades were qw<;k to ..
realize that something is wrong withthis so-called Oandhian 'Ahimsa', which can destroy a tn.ass·movemciit, just.
because ofan outburst ofspontaneous militancy froin a gtoup ofoppressed peasants. 'Soon, under the leadership of.
Sachin Sanyal, Jogesh Chateijee and Ram Prasad Bisrnil, the Hindustan Republican.Anny was formed in 1924 to.
build a mass movement geared towards a 'social revolution', to meet the armed might ofthe imperialists with.

HRA stood for ''the abolition ofall systems that made possible the exploitation ofman by man,..

to vote for all" (in that period voting rights existed only for propertied or educated men). It1s on Bhagat Singh's.
political intervention HRA moved further towards the left after the historic Kakori train raid. In 1928 HRA became.
HSRA, Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. It recognized that the British rule in India was part ofa class.
rule, and dedared socialism as its goal, rather than mere voting rights. The militant struggle for socialism was to be.
waged on the strength oforganized workers, peasants and common people. .
.
Who are the inheritors ofhis political legacy? The <'manifest injustice'' that Bhagat Singh rebelled against is still rampant across the length and breadth ofIndia. .·.

year. Not just in our minds but through our actions. Not by garlanding a statue, but by standing finn at the.
