"We don't wish to suffer by inviting a black evU to replace the white evil. Indian workers must come forward-overthrowing imperialists as well as their fndian agents who wish to perpetuate the same economic system rooted In exploitation.. "-Bhagat Singh, Draft Revolu 1onary Programme 1931 .

March 23, 1931 marked the hanging of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, and his comrades Sukhdev and Rajguru, by .

the colonial Brit1sh. What 1s Bhagat Singh's message for us today, after 77 years he was martyred? What must today's .

patriots and communists learn from him? He was not one to equate independence with a dream future full of rivers of milk .

and lakes of honey. Nor was he one to romanticise the past and promise a restoration of 'Ram rajya'. On the contrary he .

was the one who had warned the country that mere replacement of the British rulers by our own 'brown sahibs' would .

hardly make any difference. He was the one who old us that in order to challenge imperialism we must demolish the .

domestic basis of foreign rule -feudal forces and capitalist collaborators, the desi props of colonial raj and imperialist .

domination. He was the one to warn against the disastrous potential of communal politics and call for complete elimination .

of the sordid historical reality of social oppression and untouchability. .

Bhagat Singh's Legacy .

All sections of India's ruling class compete to claim Bhagat Singh as their own. The pro-US UPA Government of .

Manmohan Singh pays a lavish and ritualised homage to Bhagat Singh, while the RSS-BJP has always tried to claim .

Bhagat Singh as a Hindutva hero. Why this urgent need to co-opt Bhagat Singh, to appropriate and distort Bhagat Singh's .

legacy? The fact is that Bhagat Singh is still the most enduring symbol of youth's burning aspiration for freedom and social .

change. Those who are selling out India's freedom to imperialists, who need to define 'patriotism' as war-.

mongering and communalism rather than as anti-Imperialism, are desperate to tame and domesticate Bhagat .

Singh's legacy in order to smother that fire of radicalism within youth. .

From British Raj to Bush Raj As we look around us today, we see hundreds of Jallianwala Baghs being repeated by a repressive state machinery all over the country -in Jagatsingpur (POSCO), Kalingnagar. Singur, Nandigram, Gurgaon, Khammam and elsewhere. We are witnessing the largest land grab in the history of indepenoent India, as governments of all hues act as agents of corporate houses and promote "Special Economic Zones" in the name of."development". The deep communal wounds left by the British on our polity continue to bleed periodically. We are seeing thousands of people being booked under draco-nian laws like Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act (CSPSA) and Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), and Prevention of Terrorist Act (POTA). We see hunger and starvation reaching the same levels that they did under the British. We see farmers' traditional right over seeds usurped by the Monsantos as they are driven to suicide by debt and despera-tion. As the "brown sahlbs" In the form of the ruling parties and their corporate masters carry on the legacy of the white sahlbs, Bhagat Singh's insight stands visible in front of our eyes, and his revolutionary legacy ac-quires new meaning and relevance. .

Of Anti-Imperialist Nationalism, Not Communalism .

As the RSS-BJP pay obeisance to their ideologue 'Guru' Golwalkar, they also attempt to co-opt Bhagat Singh for their communal fascist plank. Can Golwalkar ever be reconciled with Bhagat Singh? When Bhagat Singh and his comrades were sacrificing their lives to resist British imperialism, Golwalkar was declaring that martyrs were 'selfish', and that the 'anti-Britishism' of the freedom fighters was 'reactionary', which had 'disastrous' effects for the country. The India of Bhagat Singh's dream was an India free from the 'exploitation of man by man'. Bhagat Singh was himself an atheist; disturbed by the frenzy fanned up by communal elements, he called for a complete separation of religion from politics, and declared that only a secular society could be the basis for a modern and free India. The India of Golwalkar's dream, on the other hand, was one in which the Muslims and Christians were "foreign races" who "must lose their separate existence to merge In the Hindu race, or may stay in the country, wholly subordinated to the Hindu Nation, claiming nothing, deserving no privileges, far tess any preferential treatment not even citizen's rights. " (Golwalkar, We or Our Nationhood Defined, 1938, .

p. 47-48) .

On 31 March, 1997, twice JNUSU President Chandrashekhar was shot dead by mafia RJD MP Shahabuddin at JP Chowk. Chandu, who , after his glorious tenures in JNU,had returned to his hometown Siwan as a CPI(ML) wholetimer, was campaigning for a Bihar Bandh against the massacre of Dalits during Holi by the Ranveer Sena. His killing sparked off a massive student movement where students faced lathis on Delhi's streets for a whole month. .

Remembering Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar cannot be reduced to hollow ritual; it must be an occasion to redefine the contours of our politics, in a way that brings to the fore those "revolutionary armies in the fields and ~he factories-peasants and workers" that Bhagat Singh spoke about. It is an occasion to commit ourselves to strengthemng all those struggles for social transformation and anti-imperialist resistance. To carry forward the undying spirit of Bhagat Singh to Chandrashekhar, AISA observes 23 31 March as Shahadat Saptah with public meeting, drama and film screen\ng documenting the challenges of our times. .

. w :e congratulate the student conununity for joining the JNUSU's Hwnan Chain on the occasion of the 75th M":artyrdom Day of Bhagat Singh~ Rajguru and Sukhdev. The grand vision of these revolutionaries who had very happily faced the gallows at a very young age fighting against British Imperialism, gives inspiration to the youth of this co\mtry to follow their path and. struggle for an egalitarian society. However, even after more than 50 years of independence this vision of Bhagat Si·ngh and his fellow comrades has remaiRed unfulfilled. The British imperialism has been replaced by the US imperialism, which is spreading its claws throughout the world today in many forms, thus threatening the sovereignty of countries. The illegal occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq by the US forces, which has now put Iram as their ne~t target has crippled these countries, .

_ both politically and e,conomically. We also find that the successive governments in Indla are worfing overtime to become the junior partnecrs of US, whether it is the NDA or UPA. The NDA regime led by the RSS.-BJP had left no stone unturned to dance to the tunes of US diktats wherein it had shown unprecedented enthusiasm to join the US' 'war on terrorism' by suggest~ng the 'India-Israel-US troika' and had also shown inclination to send troops to Iraq, which was only r~.isted due to the sust~ned opposition by the Left and progressive forces of our country. The RSS led Sangh Giroh, which claims to be the only 'true salt' of this country, infact has only fomented communal fascism, thereby spreading xenophobia amo!fg the minorities. The self.·styled 'patriotic leaders' of the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha were busy -collaborating with the British whereby their leaders like Savarkar signed mercy petitions, thus trying to sabotage our glorious freedom struggle. .

The Sangh Giroh's venomous politics is clearly visible in most of the communal violence happening in the country, whether it be the destruction of the Babri Masjid and the subsequent riots across the country in 1992-93, the attacks on the Christian institutions in Dangs, the killing of Graham Staines and his two sons in Orissa, as well as the recent riots in Mau in UP. But the biggest communal attack by them came in the form of the State sponsored ~nocide against muslims in Gujarat in 2002 by the Narendra Modi government, where many '\ltere killed, maimed, gang-raped and rendered homeless. There were inhuman cases of the wombs of women being torn open and the foetus being thrown into the fire. Till date, the riot affected people in Gujarat have not been properly rehabilitated by the State governm.ent. The Sangh Giroh has also indulged in caste atrocities with the most notable incident being in Jhajjar in Haryana, where Dalit youths were done ·to de~th for skinning a dead cow. The ABVP and JPF, which are the student wings of the RSS-SJP hAve not been any different from their parent parties. This campus has been witness to the culture of violence and hatred of both these groups. T-he most explicit case was the provocative march taken out by the ABVP in the aftermath of the Godhra incident in 2002, whereby abusive slogans were rendered which were targetted at the faculty members belonging to the minority community. The JPF, which is the breakaway faction of the ABVP has come to symbolize the gangwar culture in the campus, whereby students were being beaten up in their rooms and sexual violence w.as targetted at the girl students. .

While the RSS and its associates have .indulged in such venomous politics, we a:lso find that the so-called torch-bearers of our freedom struggle, the Congress al~o has stayed true to its class character. The Congress since 1990-91 has introduced the pro-US neo-liber-al economic policies which has crippled the economic sovereignty of our coWltry and has also led to the phenomena of 'jobless growth'. It has forced hundreds of farmers to commit suicides in States Jike Andhn Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Even a prosperous State like Punjab has faced this scenario. We have also seen that the economic assets are being sold for a song under the garb of privatization and disinvestment. The atte.mpted sale of BHEL and recent case of the proposed privatization of the Delhi and lvfumbai airports are examples in this regard. It was only due to sustained pressure of the Left parties that the government was forced to rollback these decisions. The common m.an has also faced increased hardships due to hikes in petroleum prices every now and then. It seems that the Cong:ress(I) has withdrawn its slogan of the 'Aam Aadmi,!! Even in the education sector, the government is not living upto its promise of spending 6% of the GDP. There have been tamp<lnt attempts to commercialize the education sector throU:gh the Private Universities bill and there has also been a. flood of self-financing institutions, thus making education a commodity. The Indo-US nuclear deal signed in July 200:S, which was again reaffirmed during the visit of George Bush in the beginning of this month is a clear sign oJ the Manmoban Singh led UPA government trying to kowtow to the US interests~. which is also a case of the UPA deviating from the Common Minimum Programme and shedding the goal of an independent £oreig,n policy. It is in this context that the legacy of Bhagat Singh has to be rerp.embered by the people of this country, especially the youth. lnfact, Bhagat Singh had always beli~ved that it was in the hands of the youth of India that the interests of the country -we.re safe and o~ythey co~d strengthen its~ sovereignty. The stooges of the Congress in the campus and the right-wing t~eactionary NSUI, once·again showing its true character, did not take any position on such an important d.ay of the martyrdom of the young F~olutiona~ies which ~a.s also visible duri..Iilg the Bush's visit, It is highly tinfortunate that even the 'ult.ras,, chose to keep away from the programme which was called to strengthe~ the student unity in the campus against the imperialist and fascist forces. We appeal all ~the stt¥lents to e_x,pose such conimunal, casteist, and opportunistic forces and ,rally behind. the SFl in c.a~rying11 forward the vision· of Bhagat Sirigh, Rajguru and Sukhdev to ensure that a classless egalitarian society is established. .

Mohali, August 15 - Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday appealed to the people to thwart the “nefarious designs of anti-social elements” which, he said, were bent upon “jeopardising peace, communal harmony and brotherhood”.

Addressing a gathering at the sports stadium at Government College here after unfurling the National Flag during a state-level function on the 70th Independence Day, Badal said a few “inimical forces” were always envious of peaceful and development-oriented congenial atmosphere in the state and thus constantly “stoking fire” to derail the process of growth and prosperity.

“Let us re-dedicate ourselves to working collectively to build a strong and prosperous Punjab besides cementing the bonds of love, peace and communal harmony, thus fulfilling the vision of our great freedom fighters and national heroes,” he said.

The Chief Minister said it is a matter of pride and honour that despite Punjabis being just 2.5 per cent of the country’s population, they had made more than 80 per cent sacrifices in getting India free from the British.

“Our brave Punjabi patriots and great warriors, who spearheaded various movements like Babbar Akali, Gadar, Namdhari and Kamagata Maru, during the independence struggle were either exiled or executed.

“Several national heroes like Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Lala Lajpat Rai and Udham Singh, who laid down their lives, would always be remembered for their supreme sacrifices,” he said.

He said when the rest of the country was celebrating Independence, Punjab was engaged in another life-and-death struggle in the wake of Partition.

Highlighting the importance of education and health as core sectors responsible for any country’s or state’s development, the Chief Minister said their government had laid a special emphasis on that count. “Due to our consistent efforts, we have added 13 new universities and 30 colleges to impart quality higher education to our youth,” he said.

Similarly, new initiatives had been undertaken in health sector by providing free treatment to the patients inflicted with cancer and to those suffering from hepatitis-C, in government hospitals, he added.

The Chief Minister said Punjab is the only state which had taken a lead in the country in this direction and now the trend had been reversed resulting in inflow of patients from outside Punjab to get treated in the best advanced cancer institutes and hospitals here.

Earlier, the Chief Minister took a salute during an impressive march past. The Chief Minister bestowed 32 state-level awards on eminent personalities from different walks of life.

The Postcard

A view of the lighthouse at Dovercourt on a postcard which was mailed in Harwich on the 23rd. July 1906 to a Mademoiselle who lived at 73, Boulevard Haussmann, Paris.

The Zoologist Marston Bates

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, on Monday the 23rd. July 1906, Marston Bates was born in Michigan. He became an American zoologist.

Marston's studies on mosquitoes contributed to the understanding of the epidemiology of yellow fever in northern South America.

Marston died on Wednesday, 3rd. April 1974, having lived for the relatively short time of 67 years, 8 months and 11 days, or, to put it another way, 24,726 days.

Chandra Shekhar Azad

Chandra Shekhar Azad was also born on the 23rd. July 1906, in Bhabhra, Alirajpur State, British India.

Chandra was an Indian revolutionary who re-organised the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) under its new name of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) after the death of its founder.

In 1921, when the Non-Cooperation Movement was at its height, Chandra Shekhar, then a 15-year-old student, joined. As a result, he was arrested on the 24th. December.

On being presented before the Parsi district magistrate two weeks later, he gave his name as "Azad" (The Free), his father's name as "Swatantrata" (Independence) and his residence as "Jail". The angered magistrate punished him with 15 blows.

After the suspension of the non-cooperation movement in 1922 by Mahatma Gandhi, Chandra became an active member of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA), a revolutionary organization, and started to collect funds for them.

Most of the fund collection was through robberies of government property. He was involved in the Kakori Train Robbery of 1925, the shooting of John P. Saunders at Lahore in 1928 in order to avenge the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai, and in the attempt to blow up the Viceroy of India's train in 1929.

-- Activities in Jhansi

Azad made Jhansi his organization's hub for some time. He used the forest of Orchha, situated 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Jhansi, as a site for shooting practice and, being an expert marksman, he trained other members of his group.

He built a hut near to a Hanuman temple on the banks of the Satar River and lived there for a long period of time.

In the aftermath of the Kakori train robbery in 1925, the British suppressed revolutionary activities. Azad however evaded capture.

In 1928, Azad conspired with fellow revolutionaries to assassinate the Superintendent of police, James A. Scott. However, in a case of mistaken identity, the plotters shot John P. Saunders, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, as he was leaving the District Police Headquarters in Lahore on the 17th. December 1928.

-- The Shootout and Suicide of Chandra Shekhar Azad

On the 27th. February 1931, the CID head of the police at Allahabad, J. R. H. Nott-Bower was tipped off that Azad was at Alfred Park and was having a talk with his companion and aide Sukhdev Raj.

Bower called on the Allahabad Police to accompany him to the park in order to Chandra. The police surrounded the park on all four sides.

Some constables entered the park armed with rifles and the shootout began. Azad killed three policemen, but was badly wounded in the process of defending himself and helping his colleague Raj.

Azad told him to move out in order to continue the freedom struggle, and gave Raj covering fire so that he could safely escape from the park.

Azad hid behind a tree and began to fire from behind it, with the police fired back. After a long shootout, holding true to his pledge to always remain Azad (Free) and never be captured alive, he shot himself in the head with his gun's last bullet. He was 24 years of age when he died.

In the shootout, Bower was injured in the right hand. The police recovered Azad's body and delivered it to Rasulabad Ghat for cremation without informing the general public.

As Azad's death came to light, people surrounded the park where the incident had taken place. They chanted slogans against the British government and praised Azad.

STUDENTS' FEDERATION OF INDIA .

REAFFIRM THE LEGACY OF BHAGAT SINGH, RAJGURU AND SUKHDEVH .

STAND AGAINST THE COMMUNAL POLITICS OF THE SANGH GIROH!! .

OPPOSE THE UPA GOVT'S NEO-LIBERAL ECONOMIC POLICIES!! .

.

23/03/06 .

Friends, We congratulate the student community for joiruog the JNUSU's H wnan Chain on the occasion of the 75r.h Martyrdom .

Day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. The grand vision of these revolutionaries who had very happily faced the gallows .

at a very young age fighting against British Imperialism, gives inspiration to the youth of this country to follow their path and .

struggle for an egalitarian society. However, even after more than SO years of independence this vision of Bhagat Stngh and his .

fellow comrades has remained unfulfilled. The British imperialism has been replaced by the US imperialism, which is spreading its claws throughout the world today in many forms, thus threatening the sovereignty of countries. The illegal .

occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq by the US forces, which has now put Iran as their next target has crippled these countries, both politically and economically. We also find that the successive governments in India are working ovenime to become the junior partners of US, v..·hether it is the NDA or UPA. The NDA regime led by the RSS-BJP had left no stone untumed to .

dance to the tunes of us diktats wherein it had shown unprecedented enthusiasm to join the us· 'war on terrorism' by .

suggest~ng the 'India-Israel-US troika' and had also shown inclination to send troops to Iraq, which was only resisted due to .

the sustained opposition by the Left and progressive forces of our country. The RSS led Sangh Giroh, which claims to be the .

only 'true salt' of this country, iofact has only fomented conununal fascism, thereby spreading xenophobia among the .

minorities. The self-styled 'patriotic leaders' of the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha were busy collaborating with the British .

.

whereby their leaders like Savarkar signed mercy petitions, thus trying to sabotage our glorious freedom struggle. .

The Sangh Giroh's venomous politics is clearly visible in most of the communal violence happerung .

in the country, whether it be the destruction of the Babri Masjid and the subsequent riots across the country in 1992-93, the .

riots in Mau. in UP. But the biggest communal attack by them came in the form of the State sponsored genocide against.

.

attacks on the Christian institutions in Dangs, the killing of Graham Staines and his two sons in Orissa, as well as the recent .

muslims in Gujarat in 2002 by the Narendra Modi government, where many were killed, maimed, gang-raped and rendered .

date, the riot affected people in Gujarat have not been properly rehabilitated by the State government. The Sangh Giioh has dectth for skinning a dead cow. The ABVP and JPF, which are the student wings of the RSS-BJP have not been any different homeless. There were inhuman cases of the wombs of women being tom open and the foetus being thrown into the fire. Till .

also indulged in caste atrocities with the most notable incident being in Jhajjar in Haryana, where Dalit youths were done to .

from their parent panies. This campus has been witness to the culture of violence and hatred of both these groups. The most .

abusive slogans were rendered which were targetted at the faculty members belonging to the minority community. TheJPF,explicit case was the provocative march taken out by the ABVP in the aftermath of the Godhra incident in 2002, whereby .

which is the breakaway faction of the ABVP has come to symbolize the gangwar culture in the campus, whereby students .

were being beaten up in their rooms and sexual violence was targetted at the girl students. While the RSS and its associates have indulged in such venomous politics, we also find that .

the so-called torch-bearers of our freedom struggle, the Congress also has stayed true to its class character. The Congress since .

1990-91 has introduced the pro-US nee-liberal economic policies which has crippled the economic sovereignty of our country .

and has also led to the phenomena of 'jobless growth'. It has forced hundreds of farmers to commit suicides in States like Andhr-a Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Even a prosperous State like Punjab has faced this scenario. We have also seen that .

the economic assets are being sold for a song under the garb of privatization and disinvestment. The attempted sale of BHEL .

and recent case of the proposed privatization of the Delhi and Mumbai airports are examples in this regard. It was only due to sustained pressure of the Left parties that the government was forced to rollback these decisions. The conunon mao has also .

faced increased hardships due to hikes in petroleum prices every now and then. It seems that the Congress(!) has withdrawn .

its slogan of the 'Aam Aadmi'!l Even in the education sector, the government is not living upto its promise of spending 6% of the GDP. There have been rampant attempts to commercialize the education sector through the Private Universities bill and there has also been a flood of self-financing institutions, thus making education a commodity. The Indo-US nuclear deal .

signed in July 2005, which was again reaffirmed during the visit of George Bush in the beginning of this month is a clear sign .

of the Manmohan Singh led UPA government trying to kowtow to the US interests, which is also a case of the UPA deviating .

from the Common Minimum Programme and shedding the goal of an independent foreign policy. It is in th.i.s context that the .

legacy of Bhagiit Singh has to be remembered by the people of this country, especially the youth. Infact, Bhagat Singh had always believed that it was in the hands of the youth of India that the interests of the country were safe and only they could .

showing it:s true character, did not take any position onsuch an important day of the martyrdom of the young revolutionariesstrengthen its sovereignty. The stooges of the Congress in the campus and the. right-wing reactionary NSUI, once again .

It is highly unfortunate that even the 'ultras', chose to keep away from the programme which was called to strengthen the student unity in the campus against the imperialist and fascist forces. We.

which was also visible during the Bush's visit. .

appeal all the students to expose such communal, casteist, and opportunistic forces and rally behind the SFI in carrying .

.

forward the vision of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev to ensure that a classless egalitarian society is established. .
