23rd of March is also declared as the martyrs day in India to remember the sacrifice and pay homage to the Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar. Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were fought for India against the British rule for independence.

Bhagat Singh, a well-known freedom fighter in the history of India, was born on 28th of September in 1907 in the Lyallpur, Punjab in the Sikh family. His father was the member of an organization called Ghadar Party working for the independence of India. Bhagat Singh together with his companions Rajguru, Azad, Sukhdev and Jai Gopal fought for the assassination of Lala Lajpat Rai. The daring adventures of Bhagat Singh have become a great inspiration for the youngsters of today.

In the year 1929, on 8th of April he together with his companions threw bombs over the Central Legislative Assembly reading slogan “Inquilab Zindabad”. They charged with the murder and hanged at 7.30 pm in the Lahore jail on 23th of March in the year 1931. Their body was cremated at the banks of the Sutlej River. Now a day, a big Shaheedi Mela (Martyrdom fair) is held in the birthplace Ferozepur, at the National Martyrs Memorial in the Hussainiwala (Indo-Pak border).

- Bhagat Singh in his final letter to his comrades..

.

75 years after he wrote those poignant words, we see Bhagat Singh every day, striving to fulfil his unfinished dream..

In Punjab on 23 March 1988, Bhagat Singh was martyred again - this time for his passionate poetry, fired by the spirit.

of Naxalbari, that declared, `Most dangerous of all is the death of our dreams!' In Punjab today, a landless Dalit Bhagat.

Singh continues to sing songs of defiance, after three of his limbs have been chopped off for demanding justice for his.

raped daughter. In the wake of the draconian Trade Dispute Bill that made it illegal for workers to strike, Bhagat Singh's.

bomb in the Assembly once created a `loud bang to make the deaf hear'. Today in the remote North East, Bhagat Singh.

confronts a draconian colonial Act of AFSPA yet again - this time, by protesting in the nude to make the blind see! In.

Jehanabad, peasant Bhagat Singhs are imprisoned for life and sentenced to death under an extinct TADA - branded as.

terrorists for possessing Marxist literature..

.

In 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt wrote a letter from jail addressed to students: `Young people must.

take the message of revolution to every corner of the country; must light the spark of revolution in the crores.

of people living in the factories and industrial areas, in the dirty shanties and broken-down village hutments, to.

bring independence and make impossible the exploitation of humans by humans.'.

.

On our own campus, those words reached out across the generations and spoke to a young man who became fired.

with a burning ambition to `live like Bhagat Singh'. Chandrashekhar, who had twice been the JNUSU President, went.

to seek out those people in the `broken-down village hutments' of his hometown Siwan, and, as he sought to `light the.

spark' of protest at a street corner in JP Chowk, was gunned down by the goons of the mafia RJD MP Shahabuddin..

.

Avtar Singh Pash, Bant Singh Jhabbar, the women of Manipur, Shah Chand Mukhiya of Arwal, Chandrashekhar.

... truly, Bhagat Singh lives and dies, again and again, in those who insist on confronting the `black evil' who rule India.

today, who refuse to give up the dream of a country and a world free from exploitation..

.

That dream faces repeated assaults: the NDA told them India was `Shining'; the UPA tells them that their Government.

is `Caring and Compassionate'. Our nation's people continue to be forced into starvation, suicide, unemployment, and.

displacement - their lands, crops, seeds, water, all being shackled to imperialist economic policies by Governments, be.

it NDA or UPA. Manmohan Singh sings praises of British rule, and forces India to become an ally of Bush, the Supreme.

Commander of US imperialism. And each of us faces the challenge of exposing and resisting, not just Bush, but his.

Indian agents in the UPA too..

.

Pash wrote, `Sabse khatarnak hota hai hamare sapnon ka mar jana.' On the 75th Martyrdom Year of Bhagat Singh,.

.

Sukhdev and Rajguru, as well as Pash, JNUSU celebrates that dream of freedom that never dies with a film on Spartacus..

.

The might of the Roman Empire was rooted in slave labour - and the `Adi-Vidrohi' had fought for an end of `exploitation.

.

of man by man'. We salute his memory, and the memory of all the Vidrohis of human history who continue to die for a.

.

world where humanity may live free from exploitation. Sd/- Mona Das, President, JNUSU.

The Postcard

A postcard that was published by the London Stereoscopic Company. It was posted in London using two ½d. stamps on the 23rd. July 1906 to a Dr. Gordon who was residing in Italy.

The Zoologist Marston Bates

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, on Monday the 23rd. July 1906, Marston Bates was born in Michigan. He became an American zoologist.

Marston's studies on mosquitoes contributed to the understanding of the epidemiology of yellow fever in northern South America.

Marston died on Wednesday, 3rd. April 1974, having lived for the relatively short time of 67 years, 8 months and 11 days, or, to put it another way, 24,726 days.

Chandra Shekhar Azad

Chandra Shekhar Azad was also born on the 23rd. July 1906, in Bhabhra, Alirajpur State, British India.

Chandra was an Indian revolutionary who re-organised the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) under its new name of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) after the death of its founder.

In 1921, when the Non-Cooperation Movement was at its height, Chandra Shekhar, then a 15-year-old student, joined. As a result, he was arrested on the 24th. December.

On being presented before the Parsi district magistrate two weeks later, he gave his name as "Azad" (The Free), his father's name as "Swatantrata" (Independence) and his residence as "Jail". The angered magistrate punished him with 15 blows.

After the suspension of the non-cooperation movement in 1922 by Mahatma Gandhi, Chandra became an active member of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA), a revolutionary organization, and started to collect funds for them.

Most of the fund collection was through robberies of government property. He was involved in the Kakori Train Robbery of 1925, the shooting of John P. Saunders at Lahore in 1928 in order to avenge the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai, and in the attempt to blow up the Viceroy of India's train in 1929.

-- Activities in Jhansi

Azad made Jhansi his organization's hub for some time. He used the forest of Orchha, situated 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Jhansi, as a site for shooting practice and, being an expert marksman, he trained other members of his group.

He built a hut near to a Hanuman temple on the banks of the Satar River and lived there for a long period of time.

In the aftermath of the Kakori train robbery in 1925, the British suppressed revolutionary activities. Azad however evaded capture.

In 1928, Azad conspired with fellow revolutionaries to assassinate the Superintendent of police, James A. Scott. However, in a case of mistaken identity, the plotters shot John P. Saunders, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, as he was leaving the District Police Headquarters in Lahore on the 17th. December 1928.

-- The Shootout and Suicide of Chandra Shekhar Azad

On the 27th. February 1931, the CID head of the police at Allahabad, J. R. H. Nott-Bower was tipped off that Azad was at Alfred Park and was having a talk with his companion and aide Sukhdev Raj.

Bower called on the Allahabad Police to accompany him to the park in order to Chandra. The police surrounded the park on all four sides.

Some constables entered the park armed with rifles and the shootout began. Azad killed three policemen, but was badly wounded in the process of defending himself and helping his colleague Raj.

Azad told him to move out in order to continue the freedom struggle, and gave Raj covering fire so that he could safely escape from the park.

Azad hid behind a tree and began to fire from behind it, with the police fired back. After a long shootout, holding true to his pledge to always remain Azad (Free) and never be captured alive, he shot himself in the head with his gun's last bullet. He was 24 years of age when he died.

In the shootout, Bower was injured in the right hand. The police recovered Azad's body and delivered it to Rasulabad Ghat for cremation without informing the general public.

As Azad's death came to light, people surrounded the park where the incident had taken place. They chanted slogans against the British government and praised Azad.
