This shot goes back nearly ten years. The Plains Bison in Grasslands have about 181 square km (70 sqare miles) to roam, and because there is only one drive-through road they are able to disappear over the hills whenever they've had enough of us humans.
I see them more in the off season than during the busy tourism months of May through September. But they aren't always available for portrait sessions. On a cold winter day in February 2013, with ice fog drifting in low areas and piercing blue sky above, they were mere dots in the huge landscape. I shot lots of frames, regardless. These animals and the land itself are inextricably one: they belong to each other.
When I first arrived to check out this park, at the turn of the century, bison had been absent from the area for 120 years. Reintroduction from the "seed herd" at Alberta's Elk Island National Park changed all that. It felt right at the time, and still does. And now the Grasslands herd is frequently used to reintroduce bison to other places where they existed historically. The herd has been tested and proven free of bovine (cattle) genes, and does not carry significant diseases (eg. brucellosis) that could become an issue in the future. Plans are currently underway to transfer more than thirty bison to Métis stewardship at Batoche in 2023, pending construction of appropriate fencing and other requirements. It's one of the big success stories in Grasslands, Canada's only national park consisting entirely of prairie habitat.

Florence Masaaba
A very passionate and vocal woman, Florence is Secretary of her women’s group and eager to share their success story. She begins by saying, “We were lost.”
The Buweesa Sikhana WORTH group originally formed as a burial group in 1982. Women would meet and mourn the loss of people in their families and community. In January 2006, they heard of the WORTH program. Florence explains that then, people began to rejoice: “WORTH is wonderful! WORTH is good!!”
During orientation, Florence and her friends saw how the program worked, and when the local Assistant Coordinator Medi asked if they wanted to join, they immediately says “Yes, we will!”
They learned about savings and literacy training and are now each saving 200 shillings per week.
“We have savings now, savings! And on some days we also have money for voluntary savings. We started with just a little, since we are poor. But we’ve slowly increased our capital.” Florence’s story is confirmed by the amount of money listed in the group cash book. In the five months that they’ve been meeting, their group has saved a total of 370,035 shillings (over $200).
With their savings as a strong foundation, the Buweesa Sikhana group has started loaning to their members, and many women are starting and improving their businesses. Some of them sell greens and raise animals, while others grow coffee and sell coffee wholesale. Florence explains, “I am a tailor. My sewing machine hadn’t been used in many years because I didn’t have the money for oil and thread. But now I have access to the loan fund, and I am able to do my business once again. (She points to her beautiful dress), I [and my clothes] are proof that this program is good for us.” She ends the interview chanting “WORTHY juu!” – Lugisu for “Up with women!”
For more information about the program, please visit our website.
When she arrived in our home, she would cower when looking at anyone, or if we wanted to pick her up. Six weeks later, and she's happy and confident to be in a LOVING and SAFE home. :)
We discovered (the hard way) two weeks ago, that she is also epileptic. Here is her fundraising page:
The Studebaker plant in South Bend, Indiana has remained as a reminder of the years that it fueled the robust workaday world and the economy in this Indiana city. Five years ago this part of the complex was still showing its age but has since been repurposed.

And here a video of the development process. The old factory windows are removed and prefabricated panels applied that update the look of the historic building. It looks like the installation of the windows on the north side was a pretty dicey process as there is very little space between that side of the building and the active railroad tracks.:

This portrait is only made with "flat circles" on a black background. Every circle has a single color, a single tone and a single size. I placed each circle one by one. It's a time consuming method. Please see some details, the work in progress and other portraits here below. This portrait is exclusively made with "flat circles" on a black background (please also see some details and the making). It took me some 9 days of intense work. I first made a photomontage using several references, then a digital painting and I finally applied my "digital circlist" technique (I placed each circle one by one, there is no automatic process). Every circle has a different color, a different tone and a different size. It's a time consuming method.
I wanted this image to reflect Eminem's personality. He may be a controversial and provocative singer, I think he's an extremely clever and interesting person, he always comes up with some completely amazing stuff, with new, powerful and unexpected lyrics and melodies. He is a talented poet of modern times.
More facts about Eminem:
Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born in 1972), better known by his stage name Eminem, is an American rapper, record producer, and actor. Eminem quickly gained popularity in 1999 with his major-label debut album, The Slim Shady LP, which won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The following album, The Marshall Mathers LP, became the fastest-selling solo album in United States history. It brought Eminem increased popularity, including his own record label, Shady Records, and brought his group project, D12, to mainstream recognition.
In 2005, Eminem was ranked 79th on the VH1 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time. He was ranked 82nd on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. He was also named the Best Rapper Alive by Vibe magazine in 2008. Including his work with D12, Eminem has achieved nine No. 1 albums on the Billboard Top 200, 7 solo and 2 with D12. Eminem has scored over 1 billion views on his official Vevo page on Youtube. Eminem is the most popular person ever on Facebook with over 30 million likes. Read more.

The other day when I was walking through the area in the early morning light I noticed the new face of Studebaker Building 84.

In the early '80's Trumpeter Swans had disappeared from Ontario due to hunting and habitat loss. Wye Marsh worked on a program to re-establish their numbers and with lots of effort, their numbers have increased to approximately 1,000. I photographed this swan not too far from Wye Marsh where they over-winter in open water. This one will soon be a beautiful white like the adults. It's always nice to have a success story. Let's hope their numbers continue upward.

I've taken this photo in Brussels, near Louise (Belgium). I've also made the rough sketch.
It is dedicated to STROMAE.
Paul van Haver, better known as "Stromae" (anagram of "Maestro"), is a young singer-songwriter of Belgian-Rwandan origin. He has recently distinguished himself in both hip hop and electronic music. He first became famous with the song "Alors on danse". By May 2010, this track had reached number one in France, the Netherlands, Greece, Germany, Austria, Turkey, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Belgium, Romania and the Czech Republic.
Vertigo Records, a label of Mercury Records France (Universal Music Group) signed him for a worldwide licensing deal.
You've got to see his "video lessons" showing how he created his best electro songs simply with his voice, a computer and a small synthesizer!
The above photo has been shot with the Samsung NX10, which has been provided to me by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

In Harmony
A poem by Peter S. Quinn
Play play in harmony
Lives beat is going on
Our urban symphony
Till days to past are gone
Day and night a song
With singings of our try
As we come on to long
In each our work and tie
Our feet are in tune
Though playing far too rough
And some are inopportune
Never coming to enough
Like wall flowers grow
The town people live
Taking time fast and slow
With their loves to give
There are no guarantees
Everything’s working fine
For those are mysteries
For day to day assign
We have our hope to find
And face an unlocked door
Just have an open mind
In a city of peace and war

White Lion Yard consists of a long narrow courtyard surrounded by two listed buildings of Mansfield stone. To the west is the building known as the White Lion Inn (last used as an inn in 1904), which had suffered extensive damage when the rockface at the rear collapsed in 1994. To the east side is a two storey building where roof timbers have been dated back to1584. Both buildings were vacant or semi occupied and were considered to be at risk.
A feasibility study commissioned by Mansfield District Council recommended a scheme to include public access through the yard, an exhibition space promoting a heritage trail and offices, as well as cafe or restaurant facilities to encourage further public access to the caves on site.
After an investment of around £610,000 works were completed, which saw the recommendations of the study fulfilled, and the buildings are now fully renovated and in a variety of use. The reinstatement of a stone staircase, the remains of which had been discovered during the project, was also included.

This older scimitar-horned oryx has given birth several times at the zoo. As you can see, she's also had some trouble with her horns. Yet, she thrives.
A young scimitar-horned oryx greets the day. Thanks to the work of zoos around the world, this species has been upgraded from "extinct in the wild" to "endangered."

It’s been little more than a year since the Farmers Market was first opened in Croatia’s Zadar County in September 2013, but in that short time it has already established itself as a regional model for rural regeneration.
As part of a project at the University of Sheffield we conducted some interviews with people who use Flickr. One thing that interested us was the many different types of benefits people got through their Flickr activity.
Here is an inspiring success story...

Medical assistance is one of the biggest issues in Abkhazia. Rural clinics suffer from a lack of equipment and qualified staff, and people have limited access to information and services.
UNDP helped refurbish and equip maternity wards in Gali and Gagra hospitals and set up mobile labs that can go wherever they're most needed to provide testing for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and other transmitted diseases. More than 4,200 people all over Abkhazia have used these services throughout the year.

The beautiful but environmentally vulnerable region of the Prespa Lake Basin is home to more than 2,000 species of fish, birds, mammals and plants. Many of these species are unique and many are in danger of dying out if their habitat is not protected.
This eco-system has suffered greatly over the last 40 years—above all from pollution caused by unsustainable farming practices, together with erosion and the presence of untreated waste and wastewaters.
