When UP 871 worked local duties around Salt Lake City, Utah on February 4, 1987, it was one of 14 active GP30s on the Union Pacific roster. The geep was built by EMD for UP in September 1962. A large pilot plow was added in early 1986 so it could better serve on the Park City Local. Time had finally run out, and 871 was retired on September 20, 1988, .
