Students in Emily Alling's Introduction to Linguistics class studied the origins of writing. Last week, students created styluses using chopsticks and sandpaper and practiced inscribing on Play-Doh tablets. The pictured activity involved inscribing actual clay tablets with one of several ancient alphabets, including cuneiform (Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite); Linear B (Mycenaean Greek); and Elder Futhark (oldest Germanic runes). Some ambitious students attempted to transcribe portions of the Epic of Gilgamesh and other ancient texts; others transliterated English words into ancient alphabets. Ceramics teacher Mona Seno created the clay tablets for the class and will fire them so that students can keep them as mementos. Photography by Glenn Minshall.
