Hey Flickr! Back again, at least for today, and hopefully getting back into the swing of uploading soon with a bunch of new stuff from a southwest trip in January and various adventures from the past year.
This however is not from the southwest trip, and for the Idahoans out there, you may recognize it as the summit of the tallest dune at Bruneau Dunes State Park outside Mountain Home. Unseasonably warm weather, unbelievably cheap gas, and the promise of a nearly-full moon? It was too good to pass up on Sunday. That last part turned out to be too good to be true when the clouds rolled in and obscured 95% of the moonlight, but I had a good daytime adventure summiting the sand and those clouds made a nicely ominous horizon.
A couple minutes after I shot this, I passed a young family along the summit - an interesting feat in itself since as you can see there isn't much room along the knife-edge for two abreast! - and the dad smiled and said "You looked like the lady from that Brave cartoon up there." I can only assume he meant Princess Merida, who is dear to my heart anyway due to our wild red hair kinship, and even though I'm pretty sure Merida wears a blue dress and not a red one, I'll take the comparison with a grin.
Everyone in the world of fiction is always debating what it means to be a Strong Female Character and getting on Hollywood's case for making it only about kickass physical strength, and I agree. It's about surmounting obstacles, flaws and all, and demonstrating strength of mind and character. And for me, after a very weird start to 2016, it's about having the independence to jump in the car off on an adventure even if I have no one to go with me and stand barefoot on the top of a sand dune in a dress in February if I want to. We can be our own Strong Female Characters.
A mysterious cloaked woman, her red hair glowing like fire against the desert twilight, sits in quiet strength before an ancient citadel. At her side, a loyal dog stands watch, symbolizing guidance and companionship. This evocative image blends fantasy and history, speaking to resilience, solitude, and the enduring human spirit. Two of my favorite costumes from the New York Comic Con 2016: Storm and Rogue baseball players. (If I don't have to explain why these are very smart and clever costume, you and i will probably get along.) The credit for the idea behind the costumes goes to the woman dressed as Rogue.
