We have to #StopAdani.

Just back from the #stopadaniconvoy march and rally in Brisbane today. Great turnout with Bob Brown and many others.

Explored #216

As the world races to solve the climate crisis, mining giant Adani are trying to build the biggest coal mine in Australia's history in central Queensland.

If built, Adani’s Carmichael mine will:

- Destroy the ancestral lands, waters and cultures of Indigenous people without their consent.

- Allow 500 more coal ships to travel through the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area every year for 60 years.

- Get access to 270 billion litres of Queensland's precious groundwater for 60 years, for free.

- Risk damaging aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin.

- Add 4.6 billion tonnes of carbon pollution to our atmosphere.

Critically, if allowed to go ahead, Adani’s Carmichael coal mine will unlock the Galilee Basin - one of the world's largest untouched coal reserves - paving the way for at least eight more coal mines to be built. All at a time when scientists are warning we can't build any more fossil fuel infrastructure if we want to avoid catastrophic global heating.

With Adani’s track record, we simply can’t trust them to do the right thing by the community or the environment.

Since starting operations in Australia, Adani have:

- breached a pollution licence by 800%, allowing polluted, coal-laden water to spew out of its Abbot Point coal terminal and into the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

- been caught red-handed illegally starting work at the Carmichael mine site. Then lying about it to the Queensland Government. Adani illegally cleared swathes of vegetation and drilled bores into aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin - putting groundwater at risk. Adani are now being investigated by the Queensland Environment Department.

- been caught out in court exaggerating the benefits of their coal project, admitting it would create 1464 jobs not the 10,000 promised and $4.8 billion not $22 billion in royalties.

- failed to disclose to the Australian Government their Australian CEO’s past as the head of a copper mine in Zambia that pleaded guilty to allowing a flood of toxic pollutants to flow into a major river, poisoning local water sources and killing crops.

Adani’s track record overseas is particularly shocking. In 2017, ABC’s Four Corners detailed Adani’s unscrupulous practices in India and links to corporate tax havens in the Cayman and British Virgin Islands.

Adani are also trashing the rights of the local indigenous people. The Wangan and Jagalingou people (W&J) have said no to Adani four times and are battling Adani in the courts. Adani have actively worked to divide W&J people to claim they consent to the mine, engineering sham meetings, stacked with people who were not part of their native title claim group. W&J are also trying to prevent the Queensland Government extinguishing their native title forever. W&J ask people to stand with them in their struggle and support their fight.

The impacts of Adani’s coal project also extend to Juru, Jaanga and Birri country. The Federal Court ruled in 2018 that Adani had not followed proper processes in conducting cultural heritage surveys at its Abbot Point site. Despite the concern of Juru Elders that cultural sites, including rock art and burial sites, are threatened from Adani’s proposed rail line and port expansion, Adani says they are prepared to start work without their consent.

Melbourne March for Our future was a snap climate action organised in a little over a week after Adani announced they were proceeding with the Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee Basin under self-financing. It is clear from the IPCC 1.5C report we need to rapidly phaseout coal and any new coal mine such as the one proposed by Adani is a disaster for our future climate.

We are in a climate emergency with Queensland experiencing record temperatures in an extreme heatwave along with catastrophic fire weather. Time for Bill Shorten and the ALP to commit to stopping the mine.

Protest outside St Kilda and Balaclava Commonwealth Bank branches in Melbourne on Thursday May 11, 2017. This protest was part of a national week of action to Stop Adani. The Commonwealth Bank has recently been found to be doing banking work for Adani. Commonwealth Bank was thought to have parted ways with Adani in August 2015, but has refused to publicly rule out funding the project according to Market Forces. The Commonwealth Bank has some $20,590 million invested in fossil fuel projects. The Bank has been an aggressive investor in fossil fuel projects investing $3886 million just in 2016, a ratio of 4.6 to one of fossil fuel investments versus investment in renewable energy, out of line with it's commitment for sustainable investment under the Paris Agreement 2C temperature targets.

Funeral for Our Future - Service conducted by Stop Adani Melbourne and friends, officiated by Uniting Church Minister Rev Alex Sangster, Processional march by Riff Raff Marching Band, Songs lead by the Climate Choir, Eulogy for the Reef by Alan Cuthbertson from Stop Adani Melbourne, Eulogy for Nature by Joseph Birckhead and Audrey Cooke, Euologu for Children's Future by teenager Marco Bellemo, Call to Action by Rev Alex Sangster and Marco Bellemo.

A very moving two hour ceremony that started and finished in Federation Square in the Melbourne DBD on Saturday 1st December. It comes after Adani announced they would be proceeding with the Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee basin, such announcement coming in the middle of an extreme heatwave and catastrophic fires across Queensland.

A processional march ocurred across Flinders street, past the iconic clocks of Flinders street station and back to Federation Square.

The Funeral for our Future comes a day after several thousands students marched in Melbourne in a climate strike calling for Stop Adani, 100% renewables by 2030, and leadership by our politicians at state and Federal levels.

The events comes on the eve of the United Nations climate Change conference in Katowice, Poland, #COP24, due to start on December 2, 2018, which has the task of adopting the rulebook for the Paris Agreement that was passed at COP21 in Paris in 2015, that set the goals of limiting temperatures to well below 2C and strive for 1.5C by 2050.

There were 13 people arrested for trespass. Greens MPs Jeremy Buckingham and Dawn Walker have trespass notices and were called to move on and did so. Five police cars were called to transport people to Clairemont police station. Photographer Julian Meehan has been issued an official move on order. 11 people are going to Claremont because they would not move.

A precious aboriginal painting form Uncle Ben has been taken and threatened with destruction. there is another group locked on at another gate.

Media statement:

Belyando, 6th December: Joined by NSW Parliamentarians Jeremy Buckingham and Dawn Walker, dozens of people have walked on to Adani’s rail construction site in Central Queensland, stopping work on the ill-fated mega coal mine. This morning’s action is part of a growing wave of disruption to stop the mine and comes just days after several of China’s largest banks including two of the world’s largest lenders to coal – ruled out funding for the project.

Some of the people have locked on to the entrance gates whilst a large group is occupying the work site, stopping work on the rail line.

“Although we are MPs from NSW, this is an issue of national and international significance. Adani represents a line in the sand for all those concerned about climate change who do not want to see a new coal precinct opened up in Australia. We stand with all those opposed to this crazy coal mine,” said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham

“Although this mine is miles from anywhere, the eyes of all Australians are on it. We have travelled days to get here but believe me many more will follow. I’m appalled by the way this project is tearing indigenous communities apart and offering a sub standard agreement to Traditional Owners for their land, with little economic opportunity. On every level this operation doesn’t stack up,” said Greens MP Dawn Walker.

“I’m a law abiding citizen, mother and grandmother. The impacts of Adani’s mine are terrifying. The world is moving beyond coal. It’s ludicrous that a country as sunny and windy as Australia is even considering this ridiculous mine. It would be a terrible investment in a miserable future,” said retiree Audrey Cooke.

“This mine is doomed. Twenty seven of the world’s largest banks won’t touch it. The Queensland Government says it won’t fund it. And the community is overwhelmingly opposed to it. Adani is a fighting a losing battle and we’re here today to show that the community will stay for as long as it takes for Adani to walk away,” said Anandan Mcewen, one of the protestors.

“We know that thousands of people are prepared to join us here in Central Queensland. We won’t stand idly by and let Adani trash our climate, wreck our Reef, and run roughshod over Traditional Owner rights,” concluded Mr Mcewen.

Civil disobedience has been taking place in and around Adani’s work sites in Central Queensland since August with more actions planned over the coming weeks and mass mobilisations flagged for early next year.

Stop Adani protest in Brisbane on 8 December 2018

“If built, Adani’s Carmichael mine will:

One: Destroy the ancestral lands, waters and cultures of Indigenous people without their consent.

Two: Allow 500 more coal ships to travel through the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area every year for 60 years.

Three: Get access to 270 billion litres of Queensland's precious groundwater for 60 years, for free.

Four: Risk damaging aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin.

Five: Add 4.6 billion tonnes of carbon pollution to our atmosphere.”

“Critically, if allowed to go ahead, Adani’s Carmichael coal mine will unlock the Galilee Basin - one of the world's largest untouched coal reserves - paving the way for at least eight more coal mines to be built.
