The start of Stockton Beach. Resorted to google to explain it, being lazy 😉
The Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, in the Worimi Conservation Lands, cover 4,200 hectares, with 32kms of the longest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. These truly awe-inspiring dunes reach heights of over 30 metres forming a majestic, alien-like moonscape - perfect for adventurous spirits, those looking for a cultural experience, nature lovers and even film makers around the globe.
Did some quad bike riding on these majestic and amazing dunes earlier this year, so much fun. And we didn’t get devoured by Sandworms either, stroke of luck 👍😀

CP train 541 has some covered hoppers on the head end in addition to lots of empty ethanol tanks further back. Train is climbing Stockton hill, with Stockton in its rear-view mirror.
There's a rich history to this line. The Winona & St. Peter Railroad built out of Winona, reaching Stockton, a distance of eleven miles, by December 1862. That milestone earned it the distinction of being the second railroad operating in Minnesota. Construction continued westward, with the line extending to St. Charles in 1863, then eventually on to Rochester, Owatonna, and Waseca. The topography among the eastern Minnesota bluffs is challenging; it's difficult to imagine the crews of 1863 digging and blasting through the rock to put the track up here on the ledge above Garvin Brook.
In 1867, the Chicago & North Western acquired control of W&SP, and finally absorbed it into the C&NW system in 1900. In September 1986, the line was spun off to become part of the Dakota Minnesota & Eastern. Canadian Pacific assumed control of DM&E on October 30, 2008, and continues to operate the line today.
Previously "explored" 20/5/20 but deleted & re-uploaded as it had "relegated" a better photo which had not been explored from my most popular images.

A surprisingly clean group of Santa Fe and BNSF locomotives pull a Stockton - Denver trackage rights train on Union Pacific's Provo Subdivision at Gilluly, Utah. In five additional miles by rail, the train will traverse the visible upper grade of track in Davidson Canyon.

I took this shot with my rangefinder while crossing Stockton Street. I always wanted to take some photos of that tunnel that, sort of, seperates Chinatown from the high end retail district surrounding Union Square. They are almost like two different worlds. The SF Leica Store is not too far from where I stood here.

Bringing it back to 1/2/2016, I left La Crosse on an afternoon a day before I started my second semester of Junior year of Highschool. This SD40/GP38-2 duo was leading the charge with 34 cars of mixed freight for the RCPE interchange at Tracy, Minnesota. Here at last light, we are to the top of the 1.7% grade of Stockton Hill and entering the city of Lewiston, Minnesota. This would be the last time I witnessed an SD40 climbing the hill, what a show it was, and I really have no hopes of ever seeing it happen again four years later.

Raymond Treasure and Gordon Fenn, who created the gardens, clearly have an artistic eye for a focal point that draws your eye towards it. This may be a very ancient stone window or a modern version for just this purpose, but with the wysteria climbing up it and the view beyond, it works perfectly. (On closer inspection, I'm sure it's the genuine article...)
Former mid-1960s Phillips 66 pier style, batwing service station. Now Los Gomez Restaurant.
“In 1960, Phillips 66 introduced what arguably became its most popular and iconic service station design, which featured a large, upward-slanting, triangular-shaped canopy. Clarence Reinhardt, an architect who worked at Phillips and designed most of the company’s buildings, developed this distinctive design, inspired by designs he observed in Southern California.”

Stockton Terminal & Eastern’s former Western Pacific Alco locomotives, S-4 No. 564 and S-2 No. 557, rest in front of the enginehouse at Stockton, California, on March 12, 2000.
The last two from Stockton Bury, which was full of interest and colour when we visited in May. The 18th-century barn has been skilfully converted into a café - rather less draughty now that each of the triangular vents has been glazed.
This may be a fairly recent creation rather than medieval, but these bee boles with their woven skeps fit the space perfectly. The garden was full of bees and other insects, so maybe they are in use.
This is the tithe barn which is also the very good café. Historic England refers to a ‘Field Barn’ and is an example of one that is still intact from the 18th century, so it’s Grade II listed. The triangular windows or vents are original, though the glazing is, of course, modern.
This is the view from outside the window, where the planting is enhanced by this collection of iris sculptures made in lead.
This is Ed Elliott's bronze Guardian Angel from the front, crouching with his huge wings outstretched.

Stockton put on a fantastic firework display again this year.
