The current Romanesque and Gothic form of the cathedral, seen today in the Stephansplatz, was largely initiated by Duke Rudolf IV (1339–1365) and stands on the ruins of two earlier churches, the first a parish church consecrated in 1147. The most important religious building in Vienna, St. Stephen's Cathedral, has witnessed many important events in Habsburg and Austrian history and has become one of the city's most recognizable symbols with its multi-colored tile roof. It has 256 stairs from the top to the bottom

Can't take all the gloom, can't look at the newspaper, can't listen to the radio anymore. But for these two, I've got time.

I thought I could just fit the loco between the box and signal but hadn't reckoned on the exhaust doing that - a case of too much clag !

I had the day off work on Monday and decided to visit some friends in Port Stephens.

That gave me the opportunity to get out to Little Beach for sunrise.

A spectacular location on a the end of a little headland which juts out within the harbour and provides a view towards the heads. Wonderfully textured rocks, crystal clear water and pristine sand within an idyllic Harbour setting. Love this place!

Stephens' Banded Snakes occur in forests along the coast and ranges of eastern NSW and Qld. They are arboreal, generally hiding in hollows or under bark and are most active nocturnally, but are sometimes observed active in the day.

Stephen is a member of the the talented Fergus McCreadie jazz trio. Their latest album, Forest Floor is shortlisted for the Mercury Prize.

Found on FM717 about 10 miles north of Caddo, near Ivan, TX, here's a group of longhorn cattle, calves and their "guard" donkeys. Donkeys (large, not miniature), are commonly used as guard animals, protecting vulnerable livestock from predation by coyotes, and especially packs of dogs. Any predators threatening animals bring guarded are at risk of being run off by the donkeys, or... savagely mauled or trampled. The donkeys get along well with animals under their protection, but show no mercy toward dangerous animals invading their space.

We were out for the day driving around on back roads when we encountered these cattle and their calves. We had stopped to take photos from the side of the road and were struck by how unruffled these things were despite our presence. I decided to walk off the road to the wire fence and get some closer images with my wide anamorphic lens, when four donkeys appeared almost as if by magic. Although you see three right away, viewing the image large reveals that the center donkey has four ears, because there's another standing directly behind the one in front. We didn't see where they were hiding, but they certainly saw us and moved into the bunch of cattle when we had been at the fence for a few minutes. After watching us closely for about ten minutes they lost interest and walked away. The cattle stayed.

Taken with a Nikon D610, a Tokina AT-X 90mm f/2.5 macro lens fitted with a Kowa 2x (Bell & Howell) anamorphic lens.

The Cars of Christchurch, New Zealand

Photographed whilst being watched by 2 Marbled Frogmouths in Border Ranges NP. My friend didn't see this snake and almost stepped on it, narrowly missing it by a few cm. Would have been a very interesting night if he did step on it!

Portrait of Lawrence Lee, stained glass window artist, in front of one of his windows at the Church of St Mary and St Peter at Pett, Sussex. Lawrence Lee was 100 years old in September 2009. I met him for the first time this January and with his son Stephen, took him to see this window. A couple of local historians were there to greet us and were very interesting in meeting Lawrence who was happy to talk about his window and the process of making it.

From a sign in the church: "The stained glass window represents St Nicholas with a lifeboatman on the shore; in the background thre is a somewhat abstracted lightship which is symbolic of the Church Universal. St Nicholas is holding a model of the building which was formerly a Rocket House, but now used as a Church and known as st Nicholas, Pett Level.

The Artist is Mr Lawrence Lee ARCA of New Malden, Surrey."

St. Stephen's Cathedral (more commonly known by its German title: Stephansdom) is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, OP. My brother, Stephen.

I've posted about my younger brother a couple times, and continue to be proud about what this guy has accomplished for still being, to me, so young. Canadian Forces Sea King pilot, twice deployed this year. Father to two beautiful children. Married to a wonderful wife. Rhodes Scholar.

He's being serious in this image because I've asked him to, mainly to spite my mother, who is somewhere on the Internets about three hundred kilometres from me raging at the screen, "you boys have such nice smiles...smile, dammit...with teeth!"

This is the interior of St Stephen church in the village of Aldwark, north west of York.

I’m not religious, never have been and I don’t see any reason why I would be in the future, but I love churches. Where ever I am, if there is a church and it’s open I will always go in, I may sit awhile, or I may just walk round it and leave, there was one south of York that had tea and coffee facilities where you could help yourself, so I did :-) and I always find it obligatory to fill in the visitors book. I don’t know when the fascination started, many years ago, but it doesn’t seem to be diminishing as I get older. It’s always a disappointment when I walk up the path to the church door to find it locked on occasions, unfortunately churches aren’t immune from mindless crime and it seems as a last resort they have to lock them, fortunately there are still plenty that are open.
