Another of my target bird while up north-the magnificent Brahminy Kite. We watched it fly over us from the boat and were very lucky it landed not too far away. They are also known as red-backed sea-eagles. They are quite spectacular with their white head and chest and beautiful chestnut brown wings and rounded tail.

It is found in northern Australia and is often found along the coast, particularly mangrove swamps and estuaries so it loves the Daintree area.

It feeds on carrion, insects and fish and swoops low over water, the ground or tree tops and snatches live prey or carrion from the surface. It also steals from fish-hunting birds, snatching prey in flight.

Sorry I hit a bad patch the last few days but hopefully back on track and will catch up with you all soon.

Conditions were perfect: 80% chance of rain and strong winds. What could be better? For shooting osprey, nothing. Rain suit for me and my camera and a surprising a lot of other adventurous souls showed up for the show. The pelicans seemed to being doing better than the osprey, dive after dive while the osprey were out in force looking but not catching much. This one did well however, and one greedy pelican made an attempted steal. The osprey pulled up up an away!

While the male Hooded Mergansers are out to impress the females, that does not include sharing a meal. They have a sneaky underwater tactic too, while the duck with the crayfish works to declaw and swallow, the thief emerges from the depths for the ambush. I saw several steals on this lively morning - including a female who stole from a male, and there was another double steal where the thief lost it back to the victim. In this one, the female managed to keep her grip on her well-earned prize. Lots going on at the pond on this morning.

If you're pulling for the crayfish, the bright red ones are invasive and hurt the natural ecosystem, actually aiding the mosquito production, scarfing on fish eggs, etc. So, more power to our hoodies!!!

I wanted a relatively cheap full frame camera to allow me to adapt my old vintage Minolta and M42 mount lenses. Decided on the Canon 5d Mark II which is absolute steal these days. I still have old Canon 50mm 1.8 II to use with it as well.

Between the palms and the man, the bird is the one who comes shining through. Unexpected moments when you have a camera in hand are often the best. Taken on Marari Beach in Kerala India.
