Another Internet find from my 1979 to 1995 work with Audio Magazine doing illustrations for their record reviews. This was for Jordan’s album “Magic Touch.” Any illustrator knows that a regular monthly gig is wonderful. Another perk I got from this relationship with Audio, record companies would send dozens of CDs, to the office, hoping to get them reviewed. After the staff went through everything for their taking the left overs were piled on a table. I was able to walk away with some good music myself.

When it comes to music I’m a purist of sorts. I think rock should sound like rock, country like country, blues like blues, etc. Guitars were meant to be played for more than two or three “power cords.” And most of all music needs heart and soul. Think Susan Tedeschi.

 

There is a lot of Garbage out there! Tokyo Hotel, Seriously what the hell. And this new punk era. Pssst, its been done before. It was called the 80’s. Ever hear of the Ramones? Country isn’t doing much better but at least there is some talent wearing boots. However, very few of today’s country stars look like they could go stretch fence or worm cattle shortly after stepping off of their multi-million dollar tour bus.

 

That being said, I think music overall has headed in a bad direction. There is still some quality music being created but a lot of the stuff being pushed in the Main Stream is pure junk and will never withstand the test of time. It may serve its purpose by collection millions from the masses but in 20-30 years will anyone still be singing it?

 

Fogerty released the song Fortunate Son in 1969. It will be 30-years old this coming year. Still, anyone who loves music can pick out the slides at the opening of that song in an instant. Black Dog (Zeppelin) or All Along the Watch Tower (Hendrix) will grab an ear in and not let go until the song is over. Crap even Free Bird, which has been played beyond its worth, is still a basic necessity. I honestly don’t think that can be said about the vast majority of the sounds pumped out today.

 

Possum said, “He stopped loving her today”, that in fact wasn’t George’s chair after all, and Freddie Fender apparently Wasted some Days and Nights. All are still withstanding the test of time. But how true are the roots of Country today? I can’t imagine Hank singing anything about a Freak Parade or a rapping cowboy. Has the line that defines music been blurred indefinitely? Have the very roots been pulled from the depths and tossed to the side in the name of capitalism, fame, and idolism?

 

Perhaps Music is in a funk like SNL and will eventually return. However I think it will take a time freezing riff, culture shattering lyrics, or a sound so Unique that it cant be dismissed. I remember, as a teen, standing in our living room mouth agape at a new sound blaring from the family set. “With the lights out it’s less dangerous. Here we are now entertain us. I feel stupid and contagious. Here we are now entertain us.” Is it going to take another Nirvana to wake the drone beats falling like bricks from our speakers? Have we grown so far away from the soul of Music that voices like Ella and Billie no longer command attention? Are the LP’s and recordings of the past the music of a dismal future due lack of heart, lack of soul, and lack of true depth?

 

So here is my question, is music dead or simply in a deep slumber?

Hailed as one of the most important innovators in jazz guitar during the 1980’s, Stanley Jordan has been a musician that’s always been on the cutting edge of his technique and his passion for the music. His latest Mack Avenue Records release “Friends” is a myriad of all genres of music will playing and staying in the form of straight ahead jazz. This project pairs him with special guest musicians that Stanley’s been wanting to play and record with for decades. Musicians include Nicholas Payton, Ronnie Laws, Bucky Pizzarelli, Russell Malone, Charlie Hunter, Mike Stern, Regina Carter, and Kenny Garrett. His band is backed by his trio which features Charnett Moffett on bass and Kenwood Dennard on drums.

 

Stanley and his trio just finished a week at The Iridium in New York City with special guests classical guitarist Sharon Isbin and the legendary Bucky Pizzarelli. Jordan, who just recorded a duet with Sharon on her latest disc “Guitar Passions,” graced the stage with him playing two classical compositions.

 

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Stanley began playing the piano at the age of six and then started learning guitar at eleven. He started listening to jazz and rock music crediting John Coltrane and Carlos Santana as some of his early influences. Jordan attended Princeton University and studied digital music composition with the legendary Paul Lansky and the late Dr. Milton Babbitt. He began playing the guitar under the two-handed tapping technique that began to create a buzz in the jazz circles during the late1970’s into the early 1980’s. It was at this time when Blue Note Records began to release new artists and Jordan made his and label’s debut of “Magic Touch” which was released in the summer of 1985. For this period, Stanley recorded a handful of recordings until he took a break from recording and focus on her personal life as well and begun studying music therapy, which dedicates his personal time to when he’s not touring.

 

Stanley made his return to the mainstream three years ago when he recorded his first record in years on the Mack Avenue Records imprint, “State of Nature.” Musically and spiritually he’s back on track and sounds and plays better than ever. “Friends” is a project that he wanted record and documents some of jazz music’s innovators of the past, present, and the future. On Friday, May 24, Jordan performed two shows at Buddy Lou’s Eats, Drink & Antiques, the venue is a three-floor restaurant/collection of Americana, and craft beers in Hancock. It was Stanley’s second time performing at the venue.

 

Stanley will visit BluesAlley, DC in September 2019.

Saltó a la fama a principios de los 80 por una técnica novedosa de tocar la guitarra que consiste en presionar las cuerdas con las dos manos, en lugar de la tradicional de rasgar con los dedos de una mano y presionar las cuerdas contra el mástil con los dedos de la otra. Basándose en esta técnica consigue reproducir el sonido de dos y hasta tres guitarras o de acompañar el sonido principal con líneas de bajo. Esta técnica es conocida como tapping. Con ella Stanley consigue armonías complejas y sonidos limpios similares a los del piano.
