Test shot from new camera straight out of the box. Hadn't yet changed the settings to raw yet, so shot as a Jpeg at 3200 ISO in very low available light. The electronic shutter is awesome, great for candid shots.

Near a farm that advertised a café, so our hopes were high, but not open, but we did get a cuppa at the Lamppost café at end of walk,

"David Kemp’s 'Waterwheel' marks the entrance to Burrs Country Park, once the site of a large mill. The work, half-immersed in masonry suggests an uncovered relic of the huge waterwheels which originally powered the industry of the Irwell Valley. The wheel symbolises the process of constant change, the changing of a river into an industrial site and its change back into countryside again. "

"Clive Seal, 57, has discovered that three young boys drowned at the old Clapgate colliery in Norden, Rochdale, Greater Manchester, on July 4 1838.

On the day, a thunderstorm passed over parts of Yorkshire and Lancashire - the storm was the cause of an accident at Huskar Colliery in Silkstone, near Barnsley which killed 26 children.

The same storm also caused the deaths of Abraham Grindrod, 11, Samuel Dearden, 9, and Abraham Shepherd, 11, as they became trapped underground by the rising waters.

After a public outcry over the Huskar Pit disaster an inquiry was set up which led to the Mines and Collieries Act 1842, which banned women from working underground and raised the minimum age of work for boys to 10."

I don't think Bury's high point is very high!

Being a bit of a cycling nut, the other reason for the trip to France (apart from a good holiday obviously) was to catch a stage of the Tour de France. Here's Geraint Thomas at the foot of the Côte de la Croix Neuve (Montée Laurent Jalabert) towards the end of stage 12 at Mende. It might only be a category 2 climb, but it was steep enough just walking up.

Stage 12: Imola > Vicenza

Highgate to Stoke Newington - we are in familiar territory but we are seeing it in a new light. For the most part this stage of the Capital Ring walk is a pleasant off-street stroll through Victorian infrastructure. We start with a couple of easy miles along a disused railway track that has been reclaimed as a parkland walk, we cross Finsbury Park, and we meander beside the New River. The New River is not really a river, it’s an aqueduct designed to bring fresh water from a spring in Hertfordshire into London. It used to flow right through to New River Head in Finsbury, but nowadays it terminates at the East Reservoir in Stoke Newington.

As we approached East Reservoir a voice said: “Do you realise that you are on public land?” I turned to see who would ask a question like that and found myself looking into a familiar face. Paul is an old friend from my days of work with Hackney Council. He is still with the firm and is currently Clerk of Works for the major upgrading of Woodberry Down estate. He apologises, due to the works our path is diverted and instead of a dreamy waterside stroll we find ourselves striding through the reality of Britain’s largest council housing estate.

On Green Lanes, prompted by my memory of Clif’s recent posting of a Victorian folly, I point my camera through the drizzle to take this picture. We like our follies big in this neck of the woods; this is ‘The Castle’. Of course it never was a castle, it was built in 1855 and is a water pumping station in fancy dress. Nowadays the Castle is an indoor climbing centre. The reservoirs are used in part as a water sports facility and in part as a nature reserve.

The rest of our walk is through even more familiar territory, Clissold Park, Stoke Newington Church Street, and Abney Park Cemetery. Back home I open my e-mail and see that this week’s Nomad theme is ‘19th century’. Well there’s a coincidence, for the most part our morning’s walk has been a stroll through the 19th century.

all major studios in Hollywood have what we call "permanents" a system of wooden catwalks to rig lights, lay our cables and tie lines from up-high. most of these wooden structures are very old and still bare the old graffiti from a golden past. here we see RINI O-zoning 50 feet (15 meters) high above the set on universal studio stage12 california

(Wikipedia.fr)

---------------

The Hourquette d'Ancizan is a Pyrenean pass that was used in the Tour de France for the first time in 2011 - stage 12 Cugnaux to Luz Ardiden. The climb starts in Ancizan in the beautiful Vallée d'Aure and gets quite dizzying with its splendid views across the valley. This fellow was about 150 yards short of the summit but climbing in the other direction - ie towards Ancizen. There was one other chap on the road, climbing from Ancizen on a mountain bike; he was probably as old as I am and so very brave to tackle it.

The col was used in a tv film in 1984, for which a fortified mediaeval village was constructed. It was demolished in 1992 after an abortive attempt to use it for tourism.
