The Armenian Apostolic Church of St. Catherine

First settled by United Empire Loyalists in the 1780s, The Old Town has a wealth of architecture from different periods and in different styles. Older buildings reflect St. Catharines history as an industrial and agricultural centre on the Welland Canal

Located approximately 9 miles west of the Niagara River and adjacent to the beautiful old town of Port Dalhousie in St. Catharines, Ontario, Port Dalhousie Pier Marina is considered one of the premier and most popular marinas on the south shore of Lake Ontario and is always filled with boats from ports all over the great lakes.

The Holy Monastery of Theovadiston Mount Sinai is built on the slopes of Mount Sinai and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint Catherine was inextricably linked with the monastery after the miraculous deposition of her holy relic on the highest peak of the Sinaitic Peninsula and its later transfer to the Sinai Monastery. The day of her martyrdom was November 25.

From this point we started the long ascent to the Agia Korifi a few minutes before sunset.

Leaving behind us the castle of Orthodoxy in the heart of the Sinai Peninsula a few minutes before the sun sets and starting the 3-hour ascent to the Holy Peak where God gave Moses the 10 commandments.

The monastery was built during the reign of Emperor Justinian on the site of the "burning bush" and is the only Orthodox monastery that has continued its operation to this day without being destroyed by raids of other races, barbarians, etc.

The beautiful library of the monastery maintains the second largest collection of manuscripts and Codices of the early Christian period, after that of the Vatican.

This image is a composite of 2 separate ones both taken at blue hour. One was a 15-second exposure in order to properly expose the stars and the second was for the foreground. Minimal light painting was done in order to properly expose the grass and the chapel without blowing out the highlights or crushing the shadows. Editing was done in Lightroom and blending in Photoshop.

On August 20, 1877 the sod was turned for a church on Ontario Street. Christ Church needed more space and thus a number of members started the new church of St. Thomas’. Mr. Beebe, an architect, from Buffalo and his Richardson Romanesque design was chosen. In October, 1879 the first worship service was held in St. Thomas’ Church.

In 1905 the window depicting St. Thomas was dedicated as a memorial to Augustus Halliday. Mr. Halliday was a freed slave who farmed a small property on Wellington St. and attended church every Sunday.

The contemporary building is a modernist example of Soviet architecture, still present is many parts of Vilnius Old Town. It houses a secondary school nowadays. In the distance, the towers of St. Catherine´s Church.

Found this little gem while hiking upstream :)

“To the complaint, 'There are no people in these photographs,' I respond, There are always two people: the photographer and the viewer.” - Ansel Adams

Constructed in 1849 as the Town Hall by well-known architect Kivas Tully. Construction of a new wing coincided with it becoming the Lincoln County Courthouse in 1862. Note the stained glass transom and uniquely curving balustrades; the steer's head and wheat sheaf on the James St. side, symbolizing the nearby market; the wrought iron fence; and the water fountain (1878), gift of Mayor Lucius Oille

The Yates Street residential district was developed in the late 1800s and early 1900s along the banks of Twelve Mile Creek on land originally owned by William Hamilton Merritt.

Seen from Spekes Mill Mouth, the mound on the right of centre is known as St Catherine’s Tor, a steep grassy hill on the land side and jagged cliff on the side facing the sea. This unusual formation is typical of the geological features of this area of North Devon. On this side a steep path leads to the top of the Tor, fortunately the main path turns right at the foot of the Tor and skirts around it’s base, through pasture which is just visible on the far right.

St Catherine’s Island, once home to a chapel, a fort, a private residence and a zoo, this tiny tidal island beside the seaside town of Tenby is a true wonder of the Welsh coastline.

Former Masonic Temple Building, 1873, with cast iron columns and window frames, signs of the new construction materials replacing brick and stone at the time. Note the decorative rosettes marking the end of the tie bars, used to stabilize the structure.
