St Andrew's day in the Scottish Borders

St. Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland and today (30 November) is his day. The flag of Scotland is the Saltire, a white diagonal cross on a blue background. This photo was taken at Loch Achtriochtan in Glencoe in the West Highlands. As the morning sun crested the Aonach Eagach ridge the clouds drifted into a perfect position to mirror the flag of Scotland. A once in a lifetime photo.

Been trawling the archives to find something suitably Scottish for St Andrews day on Monday, and found this cheeky chap from July. T'was a rare outing for my long lens!

A brief description of the beastie can be found here www.heilancoo.net/moo.html :-)

We went into Sydney today for the St. Andrew's Day celebrations and although it was drizzly in the morning, the rain held off for the most part (except when we were marching down Macquarie Street to Hyde Park). As we were leaving the park I spotted this fellow making huge bubbles to the delight of the children.

Happy St Andrew's Day, all. Last blog post on the Isle of Skye is on the blog, covering Dunvegan Castle, Sligachan, Neist Point and Talisker Bay. But this shot taken from just outside our holiday cottage. composedimages.co.uk/isle-of-skye-travel/

Another one from the family album. Cousin Lorna lived for most of her life on a small croft on an remote Scottish island. She was fanatical about Scots heritage and always wore a kilt. However, Lorna was so scarred by the debacle of Ally's Tartan Army in 1978, she could no longer bear the sight of tartan and was forced to switch to paisley. Prone to fits of temper, she died of apoplexy after being falsely accused of putting sugar in her porridge. At her funeral we discovered that she had been born in Basingstoke.

Romanians celebrate on 30th November St. Andrew’s Day (Ziua Sfantului Andrei), the national saint of Romanians and of Romanian Orthodox Church.

Saint Andrew (named Sfântul Apostol Andrei) was the first who preached Christianity in Scythia Minor, modern Dobrogea province of Romania, to the native people of the Dacians (ancestors of the Romanians)

Very important in the popular Romanian tradition is the St. Andrew’s Night (Noaptea Sfântului Andrei)- 29th of November- considered as veritable “Halloween” for the local people.

Acording to the Romanian folkloric tradition during the St. Andrew’s Night (Noaptea Sfântului Andrei) girls can find their future husbands… or at least they can “see” them. This can be done in a number of ways, depending on local traditions

Happy St. Andrew's Day! Latha Naomh Anndra sona dhuibh!

#DYK that the unicorn is the national animal of Scotland and was first used on the Scottish royal coat of arms by William I in the 12th century. Oh yes.

Here's a quick St. Andrewe's Day scene I did for the various Brick to the Past social media accounts.

Saltire from the Sky and Standard Bearer

Happy St Andrew's Day

For some occasions, only the best sky writing will do.

Hello there. Relevant comments welcome but please do NOT post any link(s).

In Scotland, the celebration of St Andrew, the Patron Saint's day as a national festival is thought to originate from the reign of Malcolm III (1034–1093). It is thought that ritual slaughter of animals associated with Samhain was moved to this date, so as to ensure enough animals were kept alive for winter, but it is only in more recent times that the 30th November has been given national holiday status.

Saint Andrew is also the patron saint of Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, San Andres Island, Colombia and Saint Andrew, Barbados.

A chilly hour in the dark down at the old harbour this evening waiting for a spaceship to fly over. The fishing boats on the calmest of rivers were lining up perfectly in front of the Stirling skyline and made for a nice distraction from the cold.

My absolute favourite local spot to head with a camera and for some headspace clearing and quiet reflection.

St Andrews Day 2015.

For all my Scottish Friends out there, "Happy St Andrews Day 2015"

Yesterday we caught the train into the city for the St. Andrew's Day celebrations and marched to Hyde Park with members of the Cameron clan. Although it was an overcast day, except for a couple of drizzly showers, the rain held off for the celebrations.

Suddenly the cloud breaks up and just as the sun sets the sky lights up.

Was looking through some older photos and have posted these, of Edinburgh, as it's St Andrew's Day today.

So the tramworks are finally gone (at least till January) and Princes Street once again resembles the most famous street in Scotland rather than a building site once again. Big wheel can be seen on the left behind the Balmoral Hotel clock which arrives every year as part of Edinburgh's Christmas. Went on it once on a windy night, NEVER again...

Long exposure shot taken from Calton Hill while waiting on the fireworks the other night.

Every year on St Andrew's Day (or a day before in this case) a visit to the Castle is a must. This was shot when the sky opened up in the afternoon. For a moment, snowy hills were visible over Fife. The Berwick Law is visible in the distance on the right. Happy St Andrew's Day!

Revisited and resaved with effects in Aviary for St. Andrew's Day 2013. I think I like the original stark black and white copy better, but you can see him a bit better here.
