Eco park Sigiriya is also known as “Hurulu park”, “Sigiriya wildlife reserve” or “Habaran national park”. It is a wildlife reserve located near Habarana on the A9 road. Eco park Sigiriya is a biosphere reserve since January 1977. The wildlife reserve is a habitat for a large number of wild elephants and therefore it is one of the best places to spot wild elephants on the island.

Eco park Sigiriya is a good alternative for Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks, especially in the rainy season.

The image captures the majestic presence of the Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus), the largest of the three recognized subspecies of the Asian elephant, within its verdant natural habitat. These gentle giants are endemic to Sri Lanka and hold a profound cultural and religious significance, having been depicted in Buddhist and Hindu iconography for millennia. In national parks such as Minneriya or Udawalawe, these matriarchal societies navigate a landscape characterized by diverse ecosystems, from scrub forests to wetlands. The adult in the foreground displays the characteristic physical traits of the subspecies, including a darker skin tone and distinct patches of depigmentation on the ears and trunk, while the calf represents the vital future of a population currently classified as endangered due to habitat loss and human-elephant conflict.

Geographically, Sri Lanka's central and southern plains offer the necessary biodiversity to sustain these megaherbivores, which can consume up to 150 kg of vegetation daily. The island’s commitment to conservation is evidenced by its extensive network of protected areas, some of which date back to ancient royal decrees. From a socioeconomic perspective, the "Elephant Gathering"—a seasonal migration where hundreds of elephants congregate around ancient reservoirs—serves as a cornerstone of the nation’s ecotourism industry. This phenomenon highlights the intricate relationship between the country's hydraulic civilization, which built massive tanks (reservoirs) over 2,000 years ago, and the wildlife that has adapted to utilize these man-made water sources during the dry season.

The cultural fabric of the surrounding regions is inextricably linked to both the wildlife and a rich culinary heritage. Travelers visiting the gateway cities to these parks, such as Habarana or Polonnaruwa, can experience authentic Sinhalese cuisine, famously characterized by "Rice and Curry." This typically involves a centerpiece of fragrant basmati or red heritage rice accompanied by an array of spicy vegetable curries, pol sambol (a coconut-based relish), and often a protein enriched with aromatic Sri Lankan cinnamon and black pepper. The region is also renowned for its Watalappam, a spiced coconut custard of Malay origin, reflecting the island's historical position as a pivotal hub on the ancient Silk Road. Exploring these areas offers a comprehensive immersion into a landscape where ancient history, majestic fauna, and vibrant flavors coexist in a delicate, centuries-old balance.
