On Sunday the 5th of August Becka and Oscar made it to the top of the tallest mountain in Colorado! This was Beckas third try at a fourteener, and the first time she has made it up. In the past , the altitude has just been too much and she has had to turn around after seeing halos, becoming really dilated and about to pass out, throwing up, or any other kind of pleasant side effect of really high elevations. We took it really slow this time and everything went OK. I am really proud of her that she kept trying even after not making it a few times.

Oscar making it up was a big surprise. We brought both dogs and knew that Berna would be fine, but I was carrying my big bag even though it was mostly empty because I was planning on carrying Oscar up the mountain. Well, he just kept on walking and before we knew it he was going faster than us! He wasn't going real fast or anything, just a gradual pace forward with his nose to the ground and he didn't want to take any breaks. We had to call him back whenever we took a break because he kept going. He wasn't even panting! On the way up, everyone kept saying things to us about how small he was and how short his legs were and how they didn't think he would make it. We just replied with "we'll see how he does, we got a bag to carry him in." Since we were intentionally moving really slow, most everyone we came across passed us up. Well, once we got near the top, those people were coming back down. Every one of them would get close enough to see us, and Oscar in the lead and let out a "no way!" Then they would look down at him and tell him he was almost there. It was like when you see video of marathons and near the finish line are all the people cheering them onto the finish. When we got to the top, there were lots of other people around and everyone was just like "look at that little wiener dog, he made it up!" and a bunch of "remember that dog on the way up? That little one?" I felt like he needed some kind of "heart worm survivor" shirt since that was one of the main reasons I didn't think he would make it.

Anyhow, we all got up and all got down and everything is cool. As a side note Berna did fine and was chasing squirrels around the forest at full sprint speeds when we got down to tree line like she hadn't even been hiking. Must be nice...
