From Auckland to Wellington to Christchurch, U.S. Speaker David Steele spent September 3-12, 2026 connecting with New Zealand entrepreneurs, researchers, technology leaders, sports organizations, investors and innovators.
David, Director of Texas and Sportstech at Plug and Play Tech Center, visited New Zealand through the U.S. Department of State’s U.S. Speaker Program, sharing lessons from his work building innovation ecosystems across startups, corporations, universities, cities and professional sport.
In Auckland, David met with Netsafe to discuss partnerships and innovation, explored U.S. market opportunities with OptiRTP, and connected with academics and sport stakeholders at AUT Millennium.
In Wellington, the program expanded across adaptive sport, high-performance sport, startups and artificial intelligence. David visited D-Sport and the New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport, delivered his AI as a Team Sport keynote at the Aotearoa AI Summit, met founders and entrepreneurs, and joined Creative HQ and the U.S. Embassy for a sportstech discussion and Innovation Reception.
The Wellington sportstech event asked a simple question: how could the city connect its strengths in elite sport, startups, research, technology and entrepreneurship into a stronger sportstech ecosystem? David joined Basketball New Zealand Chief Executive Belinda Edwards and SportBrain co-founder Paul Ifill to turn global lessons into local ideas and practical connections.
In Christchurch, David worked directly with startup founders at Ministry of Awesome, exchanged ideas with Lincoln University academics, and finished the program connecting entrepreneurship, technology and high-performance sport with the Crusaders.
Across every stop, the message was consistent: innovation works best when the right people are connected. The visit strengthened U.S.-New Zealand relationships across sport, technology, research and entrepreneurship, while creating new pathways for collaboration and future engagement on both sides of the Pacific.
