In the early morning, I embarked on a challenging hike from the Six Senses Bumthang to the revered Chorten Ningpo Monastery in Bhutan. The journey was far from a leisurely stroll, yet as I neared my destination, a breathtaking view of the monastery awaited me as a remarkable reward. My purpose for arriving at the monastery so early was to participate in the sacred morning prayers at Chorten Ningpo. Eager to document this spiritual experience and the morning rituals of the devoted monks, I hoped to capture their moments of studying, prayer, and breakfast - Chorten Ningpo Monastery, Punakha, Bhutan

I took this the other day. I'm not sure what I think about it yet. It's based on the writings of William James. Day off tomorrow. Psyched.

The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is located in Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia, about a half-hour drive from Tbilisi. The current church—featuring Romanesque stone walls, remaining frescoes, and gold-framed icons—dates from 1010-1029, but the site has been the spiritual heart of the country since the 4th century. According to tradition, the robe of Christ is buried here; hence, it is the main sanctuary of the Georgian Orthodox Church and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. During our visit, a traditional wedding was taking place: guests in festive attire gathered. You can see the bride and groom—both in the central nave of Svetitskhoveli, the bride in white with a veil. The priest, dressed in red, read prayers for the union from the service book. The two men to the left (in tuxedos) were holding lit candles. They symbolized the friends of the groom and testified that the couple was walking in the light of Christ. The woman directly to the bride's right (in the light blue dress) was also a witness. The woman in the silver-gray dress held the bride's bouquet and acted as the maid of honor. The priest sang in Old Georgian, the candles flickered, and the sound of Psalm 128 filled the space. Georgians sing in three-part harmony a capella; the echo in Svetitskhoveli made it almost heavenly. The atmosphere was intense and powerful—a unique blend of holiness and human connection.

It must be said that the temples of Mtskheta are historically the most important in Georgia. Christianity in Georgia began here in the 4th century. The “Great Cathedral” of Svetitskhoveli stands at the heart of Mtskheta. For many Georgians it is a cherished place to marry, surrounded by a wondrous world of tradition and antiquity.

Gergeti Trinity Church, one of the most iconic and spiritual sites in Georgia, with the imposing Mount Kuro in the background. The church, which is located at an altitude of approximately 2,170 meters, was built in the 14th century and served as both a religious and defensive center. The location of the monastery makes it particularly special: it stands on a secluded hill with panoramic views of the Caucasus and the nearby village of Stepantsminda. In times of war, the church was used as a shelter for valuable relics, including the famous Mtskheta Cross. Mount Kuro, visible in the background, rises to 3,980 meters and forms a dramatic and rugged frame for this sacred structure. The snow-capped peaks and steep cliffs underline the solitude and grandeur of this place. Today, Gergeti Trinity Church is a popular destination for pilgrims and travelers. The climb to the church can be done on foot, on horseback or by 4x4, and once at the top, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views over the mountains and valleys of the Caucasus.

The David Gareja Monastery complex is remote and isolated in the rugged, semi-desert landscape of eastern Georgia, close to the border with Azerbaijan. The area is characterized by dry hills, barren plains and steep cliffs, far from any town or village. It is precisely this remoteness that contributes to the spiritual atmosphere of the place — an ideal refuge for monks seeking refuge from the world. The silence, the arid landscape and the ancient caves make David Gareja a place of deep peace, contemplation and mysticism. Founded in the 6th century by the Syrian monk David Garejeli, the monastery is partly carved into the sandstone cliffs of a rugged, semi-desert landscape. Inside the monastery there is a sloping rock face with carved cells, chapels and caves that served as living and praying rooms for monks. Some are decorated with ancient frescoes. In this photo we see Kanitha at the entrance to a simple, carved cell in the monastery complex. The small round opening in the sandstone rocks gives access to one of the many caves that were once used by monks as living or prayer rooms. This cave cell is typical of the early architectural style of the monastery, everything here is sober and purposeful — no unnecessary decoration, just rock, silence and devotion. The shapes are rough and natural, as if the space had formed itself out of the mountainside. In addition to its historical and architectural value, the monastery is still a lively religious place today. Georgian Orthodox monks still live in the complex. They lead a secluded and sober life, dedicated to prayer, study and maintenance of the monastery. During our visit to David Gareja we were the only visitors. In silence we walked through the empty monastery, past rough rock walls and ancient cells. Kanitha paused for a moment at a small cave cell — simple, carved out of the rock — and you immediately felt how monks once lived here in solitude. Everything breathed peace and devotion. The view over the silent, empty plain was breathtaking. A place where time seems to stand still — and you stand still for a moment too.

While exploring the remote David Gareja Monastery, we were the only visitors. In complete silence, we wandered through ancient rock-cut cells and chapels. Kanitha paused at the entrance of a simple cave cell — a powerful reminder of the monks’ quiet, devoted lives. Surrounded by vast, empty desert views, it felt like time stood still.

The hike from Stepantsminda to Gergeti Trinity Church is one of the most beautiful and iconic hikes in Georgia. This route offers breathtaking views of the Caucasus, with the imposing Mount Kazbek (5,054 meters) as a spectacular backdrop. Stepantsminda is a small mountain village that serves as a base for adventurers and hikers. The village is located at an altitude of approximately 1,740 meters. From here the hike starts towards the Gergeti Tower, a viewpoint halfway along the route. From the tower you already have a beautiful view of the valley and Stepantsminda. The tower is part of a network of historical fortifications, typical for the mountainous region of Georgia. In the past, these towers were often owned by local clans and served to protect the community and the surrounding land. After the tower, the trail climbs further through a variety of grasslands and rocky terrain. The climb is fairly steep, but easily doable for hikers with average fitness. After about two hours of walking (approx. 3-4 km) you will reach the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church, located at an altitude of 2,170 meters. The church, built in the 14th century, is not only an architectural highlight but also an important spiritual and cultural symbol of Georgia. From here you have a panoramic view of the Caucasus and the impressive Kazbek Glacier. In clear weather it is an ideal place to enjoy the peace and overwhelming nature. Do you want to skip the climb? Then it is possible to drive to the church from Stepantsminda with an 4x4. In the summer months, horse riding tours to the top are also offered. The best time for this hike is from spring to early autumn (May – October), when temperatures are pleasant and nature is in full bloom. In winter the route can be snowy, which makes the hike more challenging but also adds extra beauty to the landscape. The walk to Gergeti Trinity Church is an unforgettable experience that you should not miss when visiting Georgia.

After the tough climb, Kanitha finally reached Gergeti Trinity Church. The steep paths and thin mountain air were intense, but every step was rewarded with beautiful views. Sitting on the stone fence by the church, enveloped by the silence of the mountains, she feels her fatigue disappear. The cool Caucasus air fills her lungs as she admires the snow-capped peaks. A moment of peace, surrounded by the history of this holy place, before we enter the church.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, Portugal

This photograph captures the majestic interior of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona at night. The stunning Gothic architecture is highlighted by the subtle illumination that emphasizes the high ceilings, ribbed vaults, and towering columns. The tranquil and contemplative atmosphere inside the basilica contrasts with the bustling city outside, offering a space of serenity and reverence.

Step into the serene ambiance of a traditional Japanese Shinto shrine. This image captures the essence of spiritual Japan with a stone torii gate standing proudly at the entrance. The gate, a common symbol in Shintoism, marks the transition from the mundane world to a sacred space. Its weathered stone texture and robust structure evoke a sense of timeless reverence.

Just beyond the torii gate lies a small shrine building with a gracefully curved tiled roof. The roof's design isn't just beautiful; it efficiently channels rainwater, highlighting the practical wisdom embedded in traditional Japanese architecture. The entrance to the shrine is adorned with lanterns and shimenawa (sacred ropes), which signify purity and protection.

Surrounding the shrine, lush greenery and pine trees enhance the peaceful atmosphere. The natural setting frames the shrine beautifully, adding to its serene and spiritual ambiance. The nearby building hints that this sacred space is embedded in a residential area, illustrating the harmonious blend of everyday life and spiritual sanctuaries in Japan.

This shrine scene isn't just picturesque; it offers a glimpse into the spiritual heart of Japanese culture. The details, from the stone torii gate to the shimenawa and lanterns, embody the deep-rooted traditions and reverence that characterize Shinto practices. This space serves as a tranquil retreat for reflection, spiritual practice, and a moment of calm amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life.

When we had come out of being in silence for a week, a lady began to talk about her experience. She spoke softly and deliberately. She said that she felt as though she could see from different vantage points. From first person to third. From micro to macro. She could see everything all at once. I laughed to myself, thinking of her with eyes all over her head. I remained silent...

It was only a short time I was hiking across the spine of these gorgeous mountains (well, actually the mountains I hiked are in my back here) ... but it was one of the most beautiful and intense experiences of silence and solitude I ever made in my life.

Mainly walking through woods and shades and greens, filled with silence and at the same time with the awesome sounds of birds, cycades, tree frogs, owls, coyotes, these open spaces and the countless curves of the Blue Ridges felt like the view into eternity ...

Of the few photos I took, there are not many, which are in a good quality or at least sharp (you can see here as well a blur, its a buzzard, lol)

Maybe this is due to the little camera, or because I was no longer able to focus to anything else than the most essentials like breathing, walking, carrying food and water for many days in a little backpack - or just because I was meant to be there and to feel and to smell and to listen instead of taking pictures.

The nature crawled under my skin and into my bones - and even now, being again in my busy and buzzing daily life full of teaching and organizing and seeing people and talking, the silence and the incredible connection with nature is still encarved in my body and mind.

It was physically really hard sometimes - I never before had such stiff knees or sore feet, lol - but it was always breathtakingly wonderful, I loved every moment, and I hope to go on there ...

This has to be exerienced by doing it - as I know now - but I want to share some of the encounters and impressions with you during the next time.

I was absent from flickr for a long time ... and I dont know, if I will find back actually on a more regular basis, but I really want to try to catch up with all of you whenever possible.

Hindu cleansing at Pura Tirtha Empul, Bali.

Well, folks . . . we had to go off our diet . . . and to tell you the truth, I'm not sure if I enjoyed doing that because the guilt was just too overpowering! WHY do we have this pressure to "indulge" on birthdays?

Solsbury Hill is the debut solo single of English musician Peter Gabriel. He wrote the song about a spiritual experience atop Little Solsbury Hill in Somerset, England, after his departure from the progressive rock band Genesis, of which he had been the lead singer since its inception. The single was a Top 20 hit in the UK, peaking at number 13, and reached number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1977 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solsbury_Hill_(song)

Solsbury Hill is a small flat-topped hill and the site of an Iron Age hill fort. It is located above the village of Batheaston in Somerset, England. The hill rises to 625 feet above the River Avon, which is just over 1 mile to the south, and gives views of the city of Bath and the surrounding area. It is within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solsbury_Hill

Sometimes a ride through the Okavango Delta can be a spiritual experience. I'm sure he was savoring the moment since we don't know the next time we'll be going back.
