Students in grades 4-8 at Madison Metropolitan School District visited the Central Library in May 2026 to compete in the Spanish Language Book Bowl or Copa de Libros to answer trivia questions about books they read during the school year.

While different grade levels took turns competing for glory on the third floor of the library, the classes that weren't competing headed downstairs to the children's area to enjoy a zine-making activity in the Bubbler Room, explore books and games, and play in the play space with planned activities provided by Madison Public Library youth services librarians and staff. More than 200 students were in attendance!

Bathed in the intense, high-altitude sunlight characteristic of the Argentine Northwest, a weathered traffic sign clings to the textured stucco facade of an aging colonial building. The universally recognized symbol for "Do Not Enter" is heavily scarred, its once-vibrant red paint scraped and faded into streaks of pale rust and white, telling a story of countless seasons exposed to the harsh Andean elements. Bold, black lettering beneath the scratched circular emblem firmly commands "NO AVANCE" and "CONTRAMANO," distinctly rooting the scene in its Spanish-speaking, South American context. A sharp, diagonal shadow slices across the upper left quadrant of the rectangular metal plate, cast by an unseen architectural overhang, highlighting the stark contrast of the midday sun. Rusted bolts anchor the sign to the uneven, sandy-toned wall, while faint trails of oxidation bleed downward, adding a gritty, authentic patina to the urban landscape. The photographer masterfully utilizes a shallow depth of field, rendering the receding line of the building's roof out of focus to draw immediate attention to the distressed textures of the sign itself. This soft, earthy blur serves as a perfect counterbalance to the vibrant, unobstructed cobalt blue sky that dominates the left hemisphere of the frame. The upward-looking perspective creates a sense of scale and isolation, typical of the remote, high-elevation villages found winding through the Quebrada de Humahuaca or tucked away in Iruya. Such rugged infrastructure details offer an intimate glimpse into the daily reality of these historic northern towns, where modern regulations meet ancient, unforgiving climates. Every scratch and rust stain on the metal surface acts as a visual testament to the passage of time in this fiercely beautiful, sun-drenched region. Bañada por la intensa luz solar de gran altitud característica del noroeste argentino, una señal de tráfico desgastada se aferra a la fachada de estuco texturizado de un antiguo edificio colonial. El símbolo universalmente reconocido de "Prohibido el paso" está fuertemente marcado, su pintura roja, que alguna vez fue vibrante, ahora está raspada y desteñida en vetas de óxido pálido y blanco, contando una historia de innumerables estaciones expuestas a los duros elementos andinos.
