The Space Shuttle Enterprise does a flyby around NYC landmarks before landing at JFK Airport. It will be put on display at the Intrepid Museum
Bonus shot for week 9 of the 52 Weeks of Lego project.
Space Shuttle Discovery is currently on its final mission, delivering equipment to the International Space Station. I had planned to save this shot for the week of the final shuttle mission ever, but all the remaining missions I could find on NASA's website coincide with weeks of important events in my personal life that I would rather showcase, so here it is this week. I missed the launch by a few days, but the mission is still on, so it's still a current event.
Taken at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS. The Cosmosphere is about the only reason for most people to visit this neck of the woods. Pretty impressive place for Nasa fans. They even have the original Apollo 13 capsule.
Yesterday at the Intrepid Museum, I bought a Nanoblock psace shuttle. Thought it would give me some fun to put together. It did, despite that tiny pieces (like Lego blocks shrunk in the drier) were hard to hold with my fingers, needing care to put together, pieces getting lost on the floor, and having over 500 pieces to deal with. I think it came out nice. Took me less than a day to complete it.
Really cool space shuttle landing simulator app for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. It only covers the last 5 minutes of a shuttle flight (approach and landing) but it has lots of options and it's only $1.99. Check out www.f-sim.com/test2/ - also my blog post: flyingsinger.blogspot.com/2010/12/ipod-shuttle.html

April 20, 2012 Got a first peek at the Discovery in her new home before they opened the museum to the public. It is a real contrast to the stark white Enterprise that used to be here.
Space Shuttle Enterprise on its way to JFK Airport but not before doing some flybys over the New York/New Jersey Area.
The final scheduled night launch of the space shuttle fleet. The unusually clear weather permitted sound to travel unprecedented distances, so that the launch rattled my windows over 50 miles away (several minutes afterward).
Sometimes in order to get the shot you want, you have to get a little dirty.
That’s exactly what I did here in Inglewood, CA when the Space Shuttle Endeavour was making its final journey to its permanent home at the California Science Center. My son, a fan of all things space, brought along his die-cast shuttle to the event and as we were leaving, I thought it would be interesting to have the two of them in the same shot and as close to the same proportions as possible.
I had him place his toy on the ground while I laid flat on my stomach in The Forum’s parking lot with the camera firmly on the ground.
The result is this shot, something we will never see again.
The vehicle assembly building and the two launch pads for the Space Shuttle program. Cape Canaveral area in FL.
