Camellia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Theaceae. Camellias are evergreen shrubs or small trees up to 20 m tall. They are found in eastern and southern Asia, from the Himalayas east to Japan and Indonesia. There are about 300 species and around 3,000 hybrids. Their flowers are usually large and conspicuous, one to 12 cm in diameter, with five to nine petals in naturally occurring species of camellias. The colors of the flowers vary from white through pink colours to red. Of economic importance in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent, leaves of C. sinensis are processed to create the popular beverage tea. The ornamental C. japonica, C. sasanqua and their hybrids are the source of hundreds of garden cultivars. C. oleifera produces tea seed oil, used in cooking and cosmetics. The various species of camellia plants are generally well-adapted to acid soils rich in humus, and most species do not grow well on chalky soil or other calcium-rich soils. Most species of camellias also require a large amount of water, either from natural rainfall or from irrigation, and the plants will not tolerate droughts. However, some of the more unusual camellias – typically species from karst soils in Vietnam – can grow without too much water. 36670

This migratory central Asiatic Wheatear occurs from the extreme southeast of Europe to China, and has been found wintering in India and northeastern Africa. It is a very rare vagrant to western Europe, this bird having been photographed in the UK.
Wikipedia: The red-wattled lapwing (Vanellus indicus) is an Asian lapwing or large plover, a wader in the family Charadriidae. Like other lapwings they are ground birds that are incapable of perching. Their characteristic loud alarm calls are indicators of human or animal movements and the sounds have been variously rendered as did he do it or pity to do it leading to the colloquial name of did-he-do-it bird. Usually seen in pairs or small groups and usually not far from water they sometimes form large aggregations in the non-breeding season (winter). They nest in a ground scrape laying three to four camouflaged eggs. Adults near the nest fly around, diving at potential predators while calling noisily. The cryptically patterned chicks hatch and immediately follow their parents to feed, hiding by lying low on the ground or in the grass when threatened.

(Note: I was trying to get chick and parent in the same frame, but the parent tries to lead you away from the chicks as a strategy of defense. If you happen to get too close both parents will continuously dive bomb you.)

From inside the small cave that has formed below the Skútafoss water falls. Located in a small valley behind Vestrahorn, not far out of the tunnel headed east on the ring road in Southeast Iceland.

After Snowmageddon 2018 struck the southeastern coast of Georgia a few days ago, there are areas where the white stuff has hung on.
Georgia Central train L783 blasts a tiny snow drift made by me and a friend just a few minutes before. This was the first shot of the train but the next few we got had very little or no snow.

It was raining when I took this photo - a real treat for someone from dry California. I loved the serenity of the passing shoreline as we cruised along.
In the winter, resident birds are joined by immigrants from continental Europe, mostly from Scandinavia; these Robins are paler than ours, have a duller red breast. The immigrants are also generally less tame because they skulk in woodlands, only British Robins are a tame garden bird
This bird was spotted about a few yards away from the place where the Eagle was sitting. Found in various south and southeast Asian countries including southern and eastern India.

We've had the 3rd wettest July on record for our area. Usually we get only 65mm of rainfall but this year we got 167mm in July.
The garden has been soggy and muddy for most of the summer....and, the MOSQUITOES !!! I haven't been able to get out at all.
This morning it was only +11C and windy...so I thought... time to try. Luckily.. I picked the right morning. Hardly any found me in the 2 hours I spent out there ..in long sleeves and long pants....happily tidying, cutting and digging and planting.
Finally got my last 2 tiny chrysanthemums planted... they've been sitting around for a few weeks now... patiently awaiting their spot in the yard.

Coal loads for Cross, SC ease up the main at Howie Siding in Comer, GA. The coal train and X583 (in the siding) will be waiting for MoW to finish work in the single track before being turned loose.

The pied wheatear is native to Southeast Europe and Western Asia. The breeding range extends from Romania and Bulgaria to Siberia, Altai and Mongolia and southwards to the Caucasus, Transcaspia, Turkestan, Iran and Afghanistan.

Saxon Switzerland (German: Sächsische Schweiz) is a mountainous climbing area and national park around the Elbe valley south-east of Dresden in Saxony, Germany. Together with the Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic it form the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains lie in the far Southeast of Germany, only 30 kilometres from Dresden, between the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) and the Lusatia Mountains (Lausitzer Bergland). They extend from the town of Pirna across the Czech border to the town of Decin in Bohemia. The German part is known as Saxon Switzerland and covers 368 square kilometres of stunning landscape. During the Cretaceous period, between 1,444 and 66 million years ago, a stretch of sea covered the land where today you will find gorges, mesas and rock towers in abundance. The region was formed when rivers flowing from the peaks of the Ore mountains deposited sediment and seashells as the waters flowed to the sea. Technically speaking the Elbe Sandstone Mountains are not mountains at all. The landscape was formed by erosion, from water and wind, which created the region's distinctive features; sandstone blocks, u-shaped valleys and vertical walls, which descend in several steps and are broken up into spurs and rock towers.
